Measures of Quality of Life among University Students
This article outlines findings from a survey addressed to measure the quality of life of university students in Cagliari. It focuses on issues related to the process of building up of a synthetic indicator of students' quality of life from responses to a set of subjective indicators all measured on ordered scale. The aim has been pursued by adopting the modeling approach of the Item Response Models which enable us to simultaneously summarize student's multiple responses in a metrical measure of the latent trait and to assess the properties of each indicator in terms of the location of its parameters on the latent trait and its capability to discriminate across students.
A comparison analysis with other classical scaling procedures to summarize multiple indicators in a single statement has been carried out with the main aim to assess the potential of the Item Response Models approach in terms of capability to detect pattern of responses which signal a different intensity of the latent trait
Migration and the labour market: Ukrainian women in the Italian care sector
As Europe experiences significant demographic transformation and cultural change, the rate of care migration is growing sharply. This phenomenon has been encouraged by the structural deficit of the labour market in response to the shortage of workers available for formal and informal welfare systems. This research describes the main features and implications of the Italian care worker labour force, using the story of the Ukrainian women who work there as a case study. The analyses are based on data from the Italian ‘Rilevazione continua sulle forze lavoro’ or RCFL (Labour Force Survey) covering the last 10 years (2007–2016). The RCFL data shows that the population of care workers in Italy is a quickly growing sector, responsible for 19% of employed women in care sector over that period. RCFL data also reveals that these positions have been filled almost exclusively by Ukrainian women who have immigrated. However, despite recording high employment rates for this group, they are highly segregated, both vertically and horizontally, and they experience difficulty integrating and jobeducation mismatching. In conclusion, this article explores relevant issues for new migration and integration policies
Evaluation lecturer's capability over time. Some evidence from surveys on university course quality
The attention towards the assessments of quality of courses, degree programs
and faculties has determined an increasing interest in collecting and analyzing
longitudinal data on students’ evaluations. This study focuses on students’
opinions gathered in three consecutive academic years. The main aim is to test a
suitable method to evaluate lectures’ performance over time moving
from students’
assessments on several aspects of lecturers’ capabilities. The use of
the same measurement
instrument to assess lecturer’s performance allows to shed some light on
changes that occur over time and to attribute them to different
factors. Longitudinal
analysis is a tool to build up specific paths of performance of
lecturer’s capability
and to highlight units characterized by particular positive or
negative performance

University drop out and mobility in Italy. First evidences on first level degrees
Italian university system presents a widespread inefficiency in the management of training processes which has – among others - a significant impact on the ratio between enrolled and graduated students. Dropout is an important issue which could be considered as an indicator of criticality of the training system. Using data from MIUR “Anagrafe Nazionale Studenti” from MIUR (ANS), the present work aims to measure the levels of dropout in Italy among a cohort of students (2011-2012) enrolled in a bachelor course (Level I) and followed for a period of 5 years. The analysis is carried out by means of Logistic 2-levels Model, to investigate the possible the determinants of the probability of student dropout, together with the role played by student mobility
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
