    Effects of Dietary Vitamin E on the Quality of Table Eggs Enriched with n-3 Long-Chain Fatty Acids

    Because of the proposed cardioprotective benefits of n-3 fatty acids and vitamin E, a trial was carried out to investigate the possibility of enriching eggs with n-3 fatty acid and vitamin E added to the hen's diet. One hundred ninety-two Hy-Line Brown hens, 39-wk-old, were divided into eight groups: four groups received the basal diet supplemented with 3% lard and four doses of dl-α-tocopheryl acetate (0,50, 100, and 200 ppm), whereas the diets of the other groups were supplemented with 3% of fish oil and the same doses of vitamin E. The performances of the hens and egg weights were not affected either by the type of lipid supplement or by the vitamin level. The treatment with fish oil caused a dramatic increase (P < 0.01) of all n-3 fatty acids of the yolk, particularly EPA (19.53 vs. 0.74 mg/egg) and DHA (143.70 vs. 43.66 mg/egg), and an appreciable decrease of arachidonic acid (25.54 vs. 67.72 mg/egg). The different levels of dietary vitamin E slightly affected the fatty acid composition of the yolk. Yolk α-tocopherol increased linearly as dietary dl-α-tocopheryl acetate increased (P < 0.01) from the control level of 90.93 μg/g of yolk to 313.84 μg/ g of yolk when 200 ppm were added to the hen diets. Twenty-eight days of storage at room temperature (20 to 25 C) did not alter the yolk fatty acid profile, and, moreover, the levels of vitamin E remained still very close to those observed in fresh egg

    A total of 360 broilers, female Cobb 500, were fed from 21 d to slaughter (46 d) a commercial diet supplemented with 0, 0.5 or 1% Schizochitrium sp. marine algae, as dietary source of n-3 PUFA. Meat with the highest n-3 PUFA content showed a reduced lipid stability, particularly in breast, while the organoleptic properties evaluated in drumsticks were not affected by the dietary treatment. Breast colour was deeper in the group receiving the highest algal supplementation

    This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different volumes of supplemented carbon dioxide, which is a potential donator of carbon atom, on the fatty acid profile of four microalgae strains (Nannochloropsis sp., Nannochloropsis oculata (Droop) Hibberd, Nannochloris atomus Butcher and Isochrysis sp.) currently used to enrich rotifers fed to marine fish larvae during two different phases of growth (logarithmic and stationary). Half of the microalgae were cultured at a low CO2 concentration (0.5 L/min), corresponding to 1% the air volume (0.038 L/min per L of culture) and the other half of microalgae were cultured at a high concentration of CO2 (1.1 L/min), corresponding to 2% the air volume (0.086 L/min per L of culture). The resulting fatty acid profile was species-specific and Nannochloris atomus appeared less suitable for marine organism feeding because of its high percentage of alpha-linolenic acid which represents the only n-3 PUFA of this alga (28.7%). On the contrary, Isochrysis sp. showed the largest proportions of n-3 PUFA also when maintained in the stationary phase (36.46%). Algae cultures contained higher percentages of n-3 PUFA during the logarithmic phase than in the stationary phase when the proportions of short-chain fatty acids increased. High levels of concentrated CO2 generally increased the content of long chain fatty acids from 17 carbon atoms onwards. The percentages of total n-3 and n-6 were higher than those recorded at low CO2 concentration. Similarly, the n-3/n-6 ratio was higher at the maximum CO2 concentration (logarithmic phase). During stationary phase the difference between the two groups was less apparent than that observed in the logarithmic one. The high CO2 addition exerted a significant and more favourable influence than the low supplementation on the C18:1, C20:0, C20:4n-6, and C22:6n-3 concentrations in both phases, in all four microalgae strains studied

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
