Peace and War in Hawi al-Hawa

Copyright © 2020 The Author(s). Forty years have passed since the original research, during which Syria has witnessed decades of change and been plunged into civil war. This chapter gives a brief update on the participants and their families. It also describes developments within the village of Hawi Al-Hawa, which was severely impacted by the ISIS caliphate in Raqqa (2013–2018). With careful locating of old and new cultural forms, this book reveals important insights into the study of social relations in peace and war. With an emphasis on dialectical change and transformations, we can better situate what has happened in this part of Syria, and how this has affected social life. Transformative change and conflict have been part of the peace-time history of Syria, and war did not erase certain continuities. The chapter can help refine the study of social life in war and in peace, by paying attention to the lives lived, the struggles fought, and the ‘messy’ complexity of human social life. Despite the disruption and dislocation caused by conflict, using social media the families continue to be socially engaged with each other and the village. The village and the family are still important categories of belonging for the people of Hawi al-Hawa.https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/mono/10.4324/9781003050551-18/peace-war-hawi-al-hawa-sulayman-khalaf?context=ubx&refId=78635be9-c1a7-46c6-a9cd-6df2123b996

The Star of Bethlehem in the Hêliand

    No full text
In his reelaboration of the Gospels, the author of the Hêliand dedicates several verses to the star of Bethlehem; its description as a ‘bright sign’ and ‘God’s token’ more frequently than a ‘star’ reflects the hesitation of the Fathers of the Church in defining it a miracle or a natural phenomenon. However, none of the sources traditionally associated with the poem can be identified as a reliable model for the author. In this article, I will try to demonstrate that the poet’s lexical choices related to the description of the star and the narrative construction of the whole episode find correspondences with the interpretation provided in the De mirabilibus Sacrae Scripturae, an early ninth-century treatise whose earliest witness was originated in the Carolingian context and thus could have been used as a source for this episode

Lebanese youth narratives: a bleak post-war landscape

To identify the themes that define the lives of a generation living in a conflict-ridden post-war society, I explore the changing views of Lebanese students through an analysis of the personal narrative texts that they created during my creative writing workshops over a 16-year period (1997-2012). Increasingly, young Lebanese feel trapped in a violent past, a threatening present and a hopeless future. As traditional forms of stability and loyalty (family and state) become more dysfunctional, modern alternative sources of education, employment, security and public discourse remain absent, creating an ever-widening disjunction between expectations and disheartening lived realities. Since 1998, student texts have focused on three salient thematic groupings: Idealism (1998-2005), Activism (2005-2008) and, most recently, Disillusionment (2008-present). In an atmosphere of escalating intolerance and hostility, it is hardly surprising that students are currently escaping to spaces of indulgence and personal gratification. As ongoing regional conflicts fuel local sectarian rivalries, I argue that reengaging educated young Lebanese in non-confrontational narratives that challenge dysfunctional systems can play a vital role in disrupting a dangerous sectarian narrative that is fast threatening to entangle Lebanon in yet another brutal war. © 2014 © 2013 British Association for International and Comparative Education.Alyan Hala, 2006, HIKAYAT SHORT STORIE, P192; Asseily Alexandra, 2009, EXPLORING SELFHOOD F, P37; Bauman Zygmunt, 2000, LIQUID MODERNITY; Bloom L. Contribution à l'étude écologique des fleuves côtiers du Liban : 2. Cours moyen et inférieur du Nahr Ibrahim

A contribution to the ecology of some lebanese littoral streams : 2. The mid and lower course of the Nahr Ibrahim — After his study of the Nahr-el-Kalb (Khalaf and Lahoud, 1983), the author investigated the physico-chemical conditions and the zoocenoses of another Lebanese littoral stream, the Nahr Ibrahim. This stream is 27 km long, and on its course 3 dams with 3 electric plants and a huge quarry are to be found. Moreover a plan for the equipement of the valley is being prepared. It appears that the dams do not modify the thermal conditions in the stream, but that the quarry delivers large amounts of suspended matter. The turbidity of the water and the biotic index of Verneaux and Tuffery reveal the effects of the quarry much more clearly than the diversity index of the fauna. Khalaf Gaby. Youthful voices in post-war Lebanon

    No full text
For more than three years, Lebanon has been beset by a succession of political assassinations and disquieting public protests. Little is known about the views of the youth, roughly half the country's population, who have witnessed the enthusiasm and sense of national consciousness sparked by the Cedar Revolution of 2005. This article focuses on the narrative texts of returnee students at the American University of Beirut, exploring their hopes and disappointments. Such trenchant voices should be incorporated into the shaping of the public discourse and reconciliation currently underway.BAUMAN Z, 2000, LIQUID MODERNITY, P208; BOYM S, 1998, EXILE CREATIVITY, P260; BUTLER J, 1990, GENDER TROUBLE FEMIN, P118; EWICK P, 1995, LAW SOC REV, V29, P197, DOI 10.2307-3054010; FRIEDMAN T, 1989, BEIRUT JERUSALEM, P229; FRISBY D, 1994, FLANEUR, P82; G23

Talking Away the Crisis? The E3/EU-Iran Negotiations on Nuclear Issues. College of Europe EU Diplomacy Paper 6/2007, November 2007

    No full text
The E3/EU-Iran negotiations on nuclear issues have been ongoing since summer 2003 with the aim to find a balance between Iran’s desire to establish a peaceful nuclear enrichment programme and satisfying the safeguards of the international community against the possible development of a nuclear weapons programme. This paper provides an analysis of these negotiations and draws the conclusion that the E3, and later the E3/EU, have entered the negotiations with Iran without a clear strategy or alternative outcomes, focusing only on ‘getting what they want’. It argues that in order to reach a mutually acceptable solution, the E3/EU needs to take a more pro-active stand in preparing the pre-negotiations and negotiations. It will be important to find a common formula. The E3/EU needs to create a win-win situation and end the crisis before it is too late
