Tracing the building of Robert's connections in mathematical problem solving: a sixteen-year study
No full textThis research analyzes how external representations created by a student, Robert, helped him in building mathematical understanding over a sixteen-year period. Robert (also known as Bobby), was an original participant of the Rutgers longitudinal study where students were encouraged to work on problem-solving tasks with minimum intervention (Maher, 2005). The research demonstrates how Robert built robust counting techniques by tracing the evolvement of his problem-solving heuristics, strategies, justifications and external representations. The study also examines how Robert made connections to his earlier problem solving. In addition, the origins of Robert’s ideas related to Pascal’s Triangle and Pascal’s Pyramid are investigated. Fifteen sessions were selected between Robert’s fifth grade (February 26, 1993) and post-graduate interviews (March 27, 2009) yielding more than twenty hours of video data. Powell, Francisco, and Maher (2003) model was used for analysis where by each session was viewed, transcribed and coded for critical events to create a comprehensive narrative. The study reveals that mature combinatorial techniques were a part of Robert’s counting strategies as early as middle school. Robert used binary notation to count two-colored candle arrangements and later to count the number of ways a team could win a World Series; modified exponential formulae to account for combinations for a garage door opener, arrangements for n-colored candles and n-toppings pizzas; discovered the combinations formula, C(n, 2), in his eleventh grade; and connected these solutions to Pascal’s identities. In general, Robert looked for patterns in his solutions; generalized the findings; and identified structural similarities in tasks presented to him as he connected three-position garage door opener to three-colored candles arrangements, pizza with four toppings to towers four high, and directions on Pascal’s Triangle to routes for a taxi on a two-dimensional grid. External representations created by Robert served as communication tools for him and provided insight into his problem solving heuristics and mathematical understanding. Serum Free Light Chain Assay as a Prognostic Marker in Patients with Aggressive B-Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: Impact on Survival Outcome

Background The role of serum free light chain (FLC) as a prognostic biomarker in lymphoproliferative diseases is being increasingly studied. In this study we present the 5-year survival outcome for patients with aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and their relation to FLC and other known prognostic markers.
Materials and Methods This is a prospective study conducted in patients diagnosed with aggressive B-cell NHL. Serum FLC level and ratio were estimated prior to initiation of treatment.
Results A total of 100 patients were included in the study from December 2013 to December 2015 with a median age of 53 years. Thirty-eight patients (38%) had elevated FLC level of which 26% were polyclonal and 12% were monoclonal elevations. Abnormal FLC ratio was noted in 12% patients. Median follow-up duration of the study was 75 months. Five-year relapse-free survival (RFS) for the study population was 54.4%. Five-year RFS was 64.1% for early stage and 48.2% for advanced stage diseases (p = 0.05). The RFS was significantly better in age less than 60 years (59.5% vs 43.8%, p < 0.001). Five-year overall survival (OS) was 61.3%. OS was significantly better in younger patients (73.6% vs 33.4%, p < 0.001), with International Prognosis Index score of 0 to 2 (87.4% vs 26.7%, p < 0.001). Patients with elevated FLC had inferior RFS (50% vs 71.4%, p = 0.04). Abnormal FLC ratio also strongly corresponded to inferior RFS (54.5% vs 66.2%, p = 0.001). OS was also significantly inferior in patients with abnormal FLC ratio (72.6% vs 63.6%, p = 0.001).
Conclusion In patients with newly diagnosed aggressive B-cell NHL, elevated FLC levels and abnormal FLC ratio were significantly associated with inferior survival

The two stories from Trishanku Aur Anya Kahaniyam (Trishanku and Other Stories), "Trishanku" and "Darar Bharne Ki Darar" ("The Rift of Filling in the Rift"), are presented translated from the original Hindi into English. These stories, written from the viewpoint of adolescent female narrators, explore the concept of rebelling against long-established tradition in India, seen from the standpoint of young persons seeking maturity. Each contains a 'story within a story' wherein a marriage is highlighted: one a non-traditional 'love-marriage,' and the other a traditional, arranged marriage which is unhappy. In addition, there is a commentary in which facets of Mannu Bhandari's literary skill and implications of the above-mentioned themes are considered, and various problems of translating from the Hindi language into English while trying to do justice to a consummate artist are discussed
Outsourcing and Off-shoring: Options for the US Construction Industry
No full textThe construction industry relies on the skills of structural engineers for all projects. There exists a large volume of design and detailing work for structural engineering in the United States (US) and there are insufficient numbers of qualified designers in the US to do the work. Recent changes in the telecommunications sector make off-shoring structural design work to developing countries like India and China a realistic possibility. Economics of outsourcing is a key reason for this possibility to be realized. It is logical to consider the effects of outsourcing in the design sector and its effects on the construction industry. The manuscript will present the author’s finding based on detailed case-study model research with two companies that are outsourcing work to India from the US. The author conducted detailed interviews with principals in US structural design firms and then traveled to Bangalore, India to interview their Indian counterparts. Results from these interviews are presented. The author will present an empirical model for outsourcing construction activities. Processes in the construction industry that are most suited for outsourcing and off-shoring are presented. Issues surrounding outsourcing such as training, economics and logistics are discussed. Atomistic investigations of polymer-doxorubicin-CNT compatibility for targeted cancer treatment: A molecular dynamics study
No full textDoxorubicin is cytotoxic anthracycline antibiotic drug used in cancer treatment. The drug's efficacy in various kinds of cancer made its usage dominant for treating cancers. In this study, we determined the solubility of the doxorubicin in three different polymers, i.e., poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide), polyethylene glycol, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone, to increase the doxorubicin's drug efficacy on the targeted tumor site. We investigated the doxorubicin-polymer interactions with carbon-nanotube in the aqueous environment for the targeted delivery application using classical molecular dynamics simulations. An in-depth atomistic insight into polymer interaction with the drug/carbon-nanotube/water is obtained within the study. We have critically analyzed various properties such as interaction energy, hydrogen bonds between polymer-drug and polymer-water, the diffusion coefficient of the drug, end-to-end distance, radius of gyration of the polymer chains, and finally, drug density contours for different drug to polymer ratios.
