En queerläsning av Olga Torckells novell ”Fröken Strandberg” – och litteraturhistoriens glömska
In this article, I analyze the short story “Fröken Strandberg” (“Miss Strandberg”), included in the collection Kvinnor och andra berättelser (1897, Women and other stories) by the forgotten author Olga Torckell. The short story is analyzed on two levels, connected by a transtemporal perspective on literature. On one level, I examine how this literary work and its author have been overlooked in literary history, using concepts discussed by Rita Felski (”Context stinks”, 2011). The literary work is seen as an “actor”, whose ability to connect with other actors via networks has a decisive effect, on whether it survives and is remembered. Is Torckell’s work, then, forgotten, because it is not “sociable”? Alternatively, based on Felski’s transtemporal perspective, one can also ask whether the work can be resurrected in a new era and make connections to new actors.
On the other level of analysis, I test this idea of resurrection on the collection of short stories, through a queer reading of “Fröken Strandberg”. Based on the theoretical thinking of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (The Epistemology of the Closet, 1990), I discuss whether queer is the kind of concept through which we can find new perspectives on the text and enable this kind of resurrection. The collection of short stories proves to connect to the contemporary reader/researcher and give rise to new questions. The concluding discussion considers the significance of other actors alongside the literary work itself, such as reviews and new editions/adaptations, in the remembering and resurrection of the work.I artikeln görs en analys på två nivåer av novellen ”Fröken Strandberg”, som ingår i novellsamlingen Kvinnor och andra berättelser (1897) av den bortglömda författaren Olga Torckell.
All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality among Users of Basal Insulins NPH, Detemir, and Glargine
Background Insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes may increase mortality and cancer incidence, but the impact of different types of basal insulins on these endpoints is unclear. Compared to the traditional NPH insulin, the newer, longer-acting insulin analogues detemir and glargine have shown benefits in randomized controlled trials. Whether these advantages translate into lower mortality among users in real life is unknown. Objective To estimate the differences in all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates between new users of basal insulins in a population-based study in Finland. Methods 23 751 individuals aged >= 40 with type 2 diabetes, who initiated basal insulin therapy in 2006-2009 were identified from national registers, with comprehensive data for mortality, causes of death, and background variables. Propensity score matching was performed on characteristics. Follow-up time was up to 4 years (median 1.7 years). Results 2078 deaths incurred. With NPH as reference, the adjusted HRs for all-cause mortality were 0.39 (95% CI, 0.30-0.50) for detemir, and 0.55 (95% CI, 0.44-0.69) for glargine. As compared to glargine, the HR was 0.71 (95% CI, 0.54-0.93) among detemir users. Compared to NPH, the mortality risk for both cardiovascular causes as well as cancer were also significantly lower for glargine, and especially for detemir in adjusted analysis. Furthermore, the results were robust in various sensitivity analyses. Conclusion In real clinical practice, mortality was substantially higher among users of NPH insulin as compared to insulins detemir or glargine. Considering the large number of patients who require insulin therapy, this difference in risk may have major clinical and public health implications. Due to limitations of the observational study design, further investigation using an interventional study design is warranted.Peer reviewe
Body size at birth and cardiovascular response to and recovery from mental stress in children
Cardiovascular (CV) response to mental stress, a predictor of CV disease risk, may be determined already in utero. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and previous studies have used adult subjects and neglected CV recovery. We investigated 147 girls and 136 boys aged 8 years who underwent the Trier Social Stress Test for children to determine whether body size at birth is associated with CV activity. Blood pressure (BP), electrocardiogram and impedance-derived indices were recorded and analyzed from continuous measurements using Vasotrac APM205A and Biopac MP150 systems. Among girls, lower birth weight was associated with lower baseline systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) values (1.9?mm?Hg and 1.5?mm?Hg per 1 s.d. birth weight for gestational age, respectively), higher SBP and DBP response to mental stress (1.6?mm?Hg and 1.1?mm?Hg per 1 s.d. birth weight for gestational age, respectively), slower BP recovery and overall higher cardiac sympathetic activity. In contrast, among boys lower birth weight was associated with higher baseline levels of SBP (2.1?mm?Hg per 1 s.d. birth weight for gestational age) and total peripheral resistance (TPR), overall lower cardiac sympathetic activity, lower TPR response to mental stress and a more rapid BP and cardiac sympathetic recovery. In boys, the associations with baseline levels and cardiac sympathetic activity became significant only after adjusting for current body size. These sex-specific results suggest that individual differences in childhood CV response to and recovery from mental stress may have prenatal origins. This phenomenon may be important in linking smaller body size at birth to adult CV disease.<br/

Associations of vacation time with lifestyle, long-term mortality and health-related quality of life in old age : The Helsinki Businessmen Study
Introduction: There are few longitudinal studies of relationships between vacation and later health outcomes. We studied these during a 26-year follow-up of the Helsinki Businessmen Study. Methods: In 1974, at mean age of 47 years, 2741 members of a cohort of executives and businessmen born 1919-1934 were clinically examined and reported their annual vacation time (dichotomized >21 [n = 2001]vs. Results: At baseline, shorter vacation was associated with longer work time, higher BMI, more coffee consumption and worse SRH. During the 26-year follow-up, 778 men out of 2741 (28.4%) had died. Shorter annual vacation was associated with higher mortality with curves starting to diverge after 18 years of follow-up, (fully adjusted hazard ratio 1.29, 95% confidence interval 1.08-1.55, P = 0.005). In old age, shorter vacation in midlife was tentatively associated with worse general health. Conclusions: Shorter vacation time in midlife was associated with characteristics related to lifestyle and with worse perceived health status, and predicted mortality up to old age in men. Medlares egenskaper : Hur påverkas förhandlingsparterna av medlarens envishet och tålamod?
Abstract Title: The Mediator’s Qualities - How are the negotiating parties effected by the mediator's persistence and patience? Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree Author: Johanna Strandberg and Emma Hjalmarsson Supervisor: Jens Eklinder Frick and Jonas Molin Date: May 2015 Aim: Our aim is to create a greater understanding of the negotiating parties' experience of the mediator's persistence and patience. Method: We have chosen a deductive approach that we have based our empirical data on already existing research. Theoretical material has been gathered through literature, theses and scientific articles. With the background to our aim, we have chosen to use a qualitative approach where we have interviewed ten people who have been in contact with a real estate agent the last 24 months. The empirical data was then analysed and discussed in our analysis and conclusion. Result & Conclusions: We have found that the mediator's persistence and patience affect negotiating partners in various ways. Patient is seen as a positive quality while persistence can be perceived as negative. Our survey shows that when persistence and patience are combined, the result is successful. Our survey also showed that the main characteristics of the mediator were not at all persistence and patience, which earlier research has shown, but instead it was nice, impartial and knowledgeable. Suggestions for further research: What we think would be interesting for further research is to investigate the mediator's perspective because we only looked at the negotiating parties' perspective. We would encourage further research on qualities in general and also on the specific persistence and patience because we fount that it was a limited amount of research based on these qualities. Contribution of the thesis: The contribution of this study is that it has created a larger understanding for the characteristics that negotiation parties perceive as important for a real estate agent. This can be beneficial for real estate agents to know what properties the parties prefer and how they should act in their efforts to make the parties satisfied. Key words: Negotiation, mediation, characteristics, persistence, patience
