On the absorbability of the Guessing Game Theory : A Theoretical and Experimental Analysis

    No full text
Theory absorption, a notion introduced by Morgenstern and Schwödiauer (1972) and further elaborated by Güth and Kliemt (2004), discusses the problem whether a theory can survive its own acceptance. Whereas this holds for strategic equilibria according to the assumptions on which they are based, the problem if theories are absorbable by at most boundedly rational decision makers is hardly discussed. Based on guessing game experiments we discuss the requirements of equilibrium theory absorption and test experimentally the effects of informing none, some or all players about how to derive equilibrium predictions

Buying a pig in a poke : An experimental study of unconditional veto power

    No full text
We study an ultimatum experiment in which the responder does not know the offer when accepting or rejecting. Unconditional veto power leads to acceptances, although proposers are significantly greedier than in standard ultimatum games, and this is anticipated by responders. We also elicit responders' willingness to pay for (un)conditional veto power

Will You Accept Without Knowing What? A Thuringian Newspaper Experiment of the Yes-No Game

    No full text
Many economic experiments are run in the laboratory with students as participants. In this paper we use a newspaper experiment to learn more about external validity of lab research. Our workhorse is the Yes-No game. Unlike in ultimatum games responders of the Yes-No games do not know the proposal when deciding between whether to accept it or not. We use two different amounts that can be shared (100 Euro and 1000 Euro). In line with findings for the ultimatum game, offers were fairer and rejections less likely when participants are older and submit their decisisons via mail rather than the Internet. By comparing our results with other studies (using executives or students), we demonstrate, at least for this type of game, the external validity of lab research.

CIVIC AND ETHNIC IDENTITY: THE CASE OF CROATIA

    No full text
The author starts from Kuhn’s division into the western civic nationalism and the eastern ethnic nationalism as a continuum along which a population is distributed. He claims that ethnic identification cannot be analyzed outside its political context and historical circumstances. Thus after the first phase of the ethnic revival following the collapse of communism in Croatia, we have witnessed how the civic component seeped into the ethnic identification. The author claims that the commitment to the Yugoslav idea in the former Yugoslavia was a multifunctional phenomenon that served also as a means of avoiding a narrow ethnic identification. With the collapse of Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav idea in Croatia reemerged as the civic identity that replaced the ethnic identity. The difference stemmed from the modern western political discourse and penetrated the processes of identification. The civic identification was an equivalent to the Yugoslav idea as it enabled people to distance themselves from the narrow ethnic identification and the sweeping ethnic revival in Croatia’s first post-communist phase. This served as an escape from the minority status just like the former commitment to the Yugoslav idea

The Rebirth of Spirit in Media: the Specifics of Medial Turn in Philosophy of Mind

    No full text
Metafizika je nekada propagirala ideju besmrtnosti onog duhovnog – sada mediji preuzimaju i konkretno provode tu ideju u djelo. Once metaphysics propagated the idea of immortality of spirit - nowadays media take on and realize concretely this idea. The concept of mind has to be conceived in a processualistic and not in a substantialistic way. Hence the contemporary philosophy must adequately face the challenges of the new media during the (re)production of mind. In the tradition of the so-called theory of objective mind there are some clues to philosophical observation of these media effects. But philosophy has to exceed the conceptual framework established by traditional thinkers and to break new ground of making concepts. In this paper the author sketches how the conception of mind phenomenon will be transformed under the influence of media

Usporedba socio-ekonomskih obilježja obitelji djece s poremećajem u ponašanju i onih bez takvih poremećaja

The author presents some aspects of the structure of families with children with behavioural disordrs and those where this is not the case and gives a comparison of the socio-economic features of these families. The starting point of the research project was the hypotheis that the socio-economic status of the family has a significant influence on the behaviour of children, that is that the adaptibility of the child to the social context depends on die nature of the family group. Here one has in mind the stability of family relationships and the types of family connections (love, gentleness, authority), the place of the family within society and the culture of the family. This is the reason that the author examines in details the connection between behavioural disorders in children and the state of the family. The article presents those forms of familial structure and familial relationships which directly influence the socialization of the child using the methods of analysing pedagogical documentation and sampling. The results of the investigation confirmed the hypotheis that better social adaptation takes place with children in families with a higher socio-economic siatus and better conditions within the family circle as these pertain to the material conditions of the family, the educational level of the parents, the interest parents show for the child’s school success and their access to bringing up their children in respect of the lines of communication between parents and children. On the basis of the findings gathered during the investigation, the author concludes that there is a close connection between the status of the family and behavioural disorders in children.U članku se izlažu neki aspekti strukture obitelji djece s poremećajima u ponašanju i djece bez takvih poremećaja, te iznosi usporedba socio-ekonomskih obilježja ovih obitelji.

    Beyond Procedural Fairness and Reciprocity

Most research in economics models agents somehow motivated by outcomes. Here, we model agents motivated by procedures instead, where procedures are defined independently of an outcome. To that end, we design procedures which yield the same expected outcomes or carry the same information on other's intentions while they have different outcome-invariant properties. Agents are experimentally confirmed to exhibit preferences over these which link to psychological attributes of their moral judgment.procedural preferences; experiment; procedural fairness
