    Sr isotope variations in Oligocene–Miocene and modern biogenic carbonate formations of Koko Guyot (Emperor Seamount Chain, Pacific Ocean)

    The Hawaiian–Emperor Seamount Chain, a major topographic feature of the Pacific Ocean floor, is composed of seamounts capped with fossil coral reef deposits that originally formed close to sea level but are now covered by hundreds of meters of water owing to prolonged subsidence. These fossil reef deposits are important archives of paleoenvironmental change and yield information on the subsidence history of the seamounts. We studied the Sr isotope compositions of Oligocene–Miocene coral reef limestone from Koko Guyot in the southern Emperor Seamount Chain to assess the dynamics of the subsidence. The ages of the studied samples containing coral fragments established by Sr isotope stratigraphy vary from 26.3 to 20.1 Ma. In contrast, the youngest samples (15.3 Ma), which were deposited in water depths of >120 m, are barren of corals and are composed exclusively of bryozoans and coralline algae. The subsidence rate of the Koko Guyot volcanic structure was not constant over time. Integration of our new data with the results of previous studies reveals that the subsidence rate was 0.046 ± 0.005 mm/yr during the first 25–30 Myr (from 49–44 to 20 Ma). During this period, Koko Guyot was in a bathymetric interval favorable for coral reef development, and its subsidence was compensated by rapid vertical growth of the reef. Subsequently, the subsidence rate decreased to an average value of 0.019 ± 0.003 mm/yr from 20 to 15 Ma. The decrease in the rate of bottom subsidence coincided with unfavorable environmental conditions for coral reef development, leading to the disappearance of corals. The average subsidence rate has been 0.015 ± 0.002 mm/yr since 15 Ma, comparable to the present-day subsidence rate. We also analyzed the stable Sr isotope ratios (δ88/86Sr) of warm-water coral samples formed at 25–20 Ma (0.32‰ ± 0.1‰), as well as carbonate of large benthic foraminifera, coralline algae, and other non-coral species for the period 20–15 Ma (0.10‰ ± 0.09‰). We suggest that the large difference in carbonate δ88/86Sr between 25–20 and 20–15 Ma corresponds to a difference in the fractionation factor caused by environmental and benthic community change

    Live attenuated influenza H7N3 vaccine is safe, immunogenic and confers protection in animal models

    Background: In 2003 the outbreak of highly pathogenic H7 avian influenza occurred in the Netherlands. The avian H7 virus causing the outbreak was also detected in humans; one person died of pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Our paper describes preclinical studies of a H7N3 live attenuated influenza A vaccine (LAIV) candidate in various animal models. Objectives: To study safety, immunogenicity and protection of H7N3 LAIV candidate in mice, ferrets and chickens. Methods: The vaccine was generated by a classical reassortment between low pathogenicity A/mallard/Netherlands/12/00 (H7N3) virus and A/Leningrad/134/17/57 (H2N2) master donor virus (MDV). Results: Immunogenicity was found that H7N3 LAIV was similar to the MDV in terms of replication in the respiratory organs of mice and failed to replicate in mouse brains. One dose of a H7N3 LAIV elicited measurable antibody response and it was further boosted with a second vaccine dose. Immunization of mice with H7N3 LAIV provided protection against infection following a homologous challenge with wild type H7N3 virus. Attenuated phenotype of H7N3 LAIV has been confirmed in ferrets. Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of H7N3 LAIV in ferrets were also demonstrated. The vaccine protected animals from subsequent infection with wild type H7N3 virus. The results of histopathology study revealed that inoculation of H7N3 LAIV in ferrets did not cause any inflammation or destructive changes in lungs. Lack of H7N3 LAIV replication in chicken demonstrated complete safety of this preparation for poultry. Conclusion: Results of our study suggest that new H7N3 LAIV candidate is safe, immunogenic and protects from homologues influenza virus infection in mice and ferrets. © Rekstin et al

    State Financial Support During the Crisis and Its Impact on Business Development

    The article discusses the main directions of financial support for business by the Government of the Russian Federation in the conditions of economic imbalances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the article is the analysis of state financial support as a single model, formed taking into account national specifics. The objectives of the study include the analysis of forms and tools, the objectivity of such support, its feasibility and scope. The authors analyze as common elements that make up the financial support of the governments of many countries, and the specifics of its organization in the Russian Federation are highlighted. As a result of the study, the authors concluded that in Russia a national model of state financial support for business has been formed, it is aimed at providing business with funds for uninterrupted economic activity. In this model, the state does not undertake to fully finance the activities of commercial organizations. The government provides businesses with the opportunity to survive temporary difficulties, but at the same time maintains market competition. The article substantiates the proposals for providing state financial support to certain types and areas of business in the post-crisis period, its tools

    Fungi, Source of Biologically Active Substances with Important Application in Agricultural Fields

    Eleven species (dried fruiting bodies) Fomitopsis pinicola, Cerrena unicolor, Piptoporus betulinus, Daedaleopsis tricolor, Stereum subtomentosum, Funalia trogii, Phellinus cinereus, Trametes versicolor, T. pubescens, T. gibbosa and Ganoderma applanatum were used to extract biologically active compounds (BACs) as crude fungal extracts (CFEs) in distilled water (diH2O) which was further studied to evaluate their impact on the rate of seeds germination, biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, biomass formation and in tomato seedlings length (Solanum lycopersicum, cv. Dubrava).     Total macrobenthos abundance during RV 'Akademik Kovalevsky' cruise from the target sites of Istanbul Strait (Bosporus outlet), Black Sea 1958-1960. Studies of the benthic fauna in the Bosporus outlet area were made by the Department of Benthos of IBSS, during RV 'Akademik Kovalevsky' cruise (July 1958 and June 1960).A total of 10 benthic stations were sampled at depths of 70–113 m. From these studies three ecological communities could be distinguished, namely Modiolula phaseolina, located to the north-east of the Bosporus outlet, and the ecological communities Sternaspis scutata and Amphiura stepanovi – Terebellides stroemi located to the north-west of the Strait
