On the comparison of two numerical methods for conformal mapping

    No full text
Let G be a simply-connected domain in the t—plane (t = x + iy), bounded by the three straight lines x = 0, y = 0, x =1 and a Jordan arc with cartesian equation y = τ (X). Also, let g be the function which maps conformally a rectangle R onto G, so that the four corners of R are mapped onto those of G. In this paper we show that the method con-sidered recently by Challis and Burley [2], for determining approx- imations to g, is equivalent to a special case of the well-known method of Garrick [8] for the mapping of doubly-connected domains, Hence, by using results already available in the literature, we provide some theoretical justification for the method of [2]

Matrix methods and the property of stretchings

    No full text
    D. F. Dawson has proved that if x x is a sequence and A A is a matrix with convergent row sums, then there exist a stretching z z of x x and a row finite matrix B B such that A y Ay and B y By converge or diverge together for each stretching y y of z z . An extension of this result is used to answer a question proposed by D. Gaier regarding the conditions necessary for a matrix A A to have the property that if x x is a sequence with finite limit point t t , then A A sums a stretching of x x to t t .</p

Growth of power series with square root gaps

    No full text
For entire functions ff whose power series have Hadamard gaps with ratio α\alpha (>1)(>1), Gaier has shown that the condition f(x)ex|f(x)|\le e^x for x0x\ge 0 implies f(z)Cαez|f(z)|\le C_\alpha e^{|z|} ()(*) for all zz. Here the result is extended to the case of square root gaps, that is, f(z)=bpkzpkf(z)=\sum b_{p_k}z^{p_k} with pk+1pkαpkp_{k+1}-p_k\ge \alpha\sqrt{p_k} where α>0\alpha>0. Smaller gaps cannot work. In connection with his proof of the general high indices theorem for Borel summability, Gaier had shown that square root gaps imply bn=O(ecn/n!)b_n={\cal O}(e^{c\sqrt n}/n!). Having such an estimate, one can adaptPitt's Tauberian method for the restricted Borel high indices theorem to show that, in fact,bncαn/n!|b_n|\le c_\alpha\sqrt n/n! which implies ()(*). The author also states an equivalent distance formula involving monomials xpkexx^{p_k}e^{-x} in L(0,)L^\infty(0,\infty)

The Faber Operator and its Boundedness

    No full text
AbstractLet G be a domain bounded by a Jordan curve Γ, and let A(G) be the Banach space of functions continuous on G and holomorphic in G. The Faber operator T is a linear mapping from A(D) to A(G) mapping wn onto the nth Faber polynomial Fn(z) (n=0, 1, 2, …). We show that ‖T‖<∞ if Γ is piecewise Dini-smooth, and give an example of a quasicircle Γ for which ‖T‖=∞
