Fabeln: Jean de LaFontaine
One of the chief glories of this book lies in the twenty-four copper engravings after Oudry. By contrast with a similar edition of Etzel from Müller in 1911, the illustrations here are larger and lack titles. Among the strongest are those of Death and the woodman (18), of the wolves and sheep (60), of the old woman and her two maids (90), and of the coach and the fly (134). That edition had eighty fables and thirty reproductions, while this edition has forty more fables and six fewer engravings. One finds a Nachwort, notes, and a T of C at the back. On the second-to-last page one reads Von diesem Werk wurde eine einmalige Vorzugausgabe von 200 numerierten Exemplaren gedruckt. Were these numbered copies printed before this more general printing? On the very last page we learn that the printing of text and illustrations was done by two different firms. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: GermanOriginal language: freTheodor Etze
On the binary nature of the γ-ray sources AGL J2241+4454 (= MWC 656) and HESS J0632+057 (= MWC 148)
We present optical spectroscopy of MWC 656 and MWC 148, the proposed optical counterparts of the gamma-ray sources AGL J2241+4454 and HESS J0632+0 57, respectively. The main parameters of the Halpha emission line (EW, FWHM and centroid velocity) in these stars are modulated on the proposed orbital periods of 60.37 and 321 days, respectively. These modulations are likely produced by the resonant interaction of the Be discs with compact stars in eccentric orbits. We also present radial velocity curves of the optical stars folded on the above periods and obtain the first orbital elements of the two gamma-ray sources thus confirming their binary nature. Our orbital solution support eccentricities e~0.4 and 0.83+-0.08 for MWC 656 and MWC 148, respectively. Further, our orbital elements imply that the X-ray outbursts in HESS J0632+057/MWC 148 are delayed ~0.3 orbital phases after periastron passage, similarly to the case of LS I +61 303. In addition, the optical photometric light curve maxima in AGL J2241+4454/MWC 656 occur ~0.25 phases passed periastron, similar to what is seen in LS I +61 303. We also find that the orbital eccentricity is correlated with orbital period for the known gamma-ray binaries. This is explained by the fact that small stellar separations are required for the efficient triggering of VHE radiation. Another correlation between the EW of Halpha and orbital period is also observed, similarly to the case of Be/X-ray binaries. These correlations are useful to provide estimates of the key orbital parameters Porb and e from the Halpha line in future Be gamma-ray binary candidates
Residue Number System Recursive Digital Filtering With Error Correction Capabilities
Residue number system (RNS) digital filters are obtained by encoding all filter arithmetic and signals in a residue number system, creating an architecture consisting of a set of parallel arithmetic operations. To prevent overflow, the design and realization of recursive RNS digital filters require scaling, generally a difficult operation in an RNS. This research presents specialized residue classes in which scaling is a simple operation that can be easily mechanized. The resulting hierarchy of useful two-, three-, and four-modulus classes are described with an analysis of the quantization error due to scaling. Computer simulations illustrate the filter performance in these RNS classes. Despite much recent work in the design and realization of digital filters, little attention has been given to problems of error detection and correction in digital filters. This research examines inherent properties of RNS digital filters that can be used for such purposes. Theory is presented for handling overflow suppression and single error detection and correction both separately and simultaneously, and conditions for distinguishing single and double errors are discussed. The concept of gradual system degradation is described including results of computer simulations of filters with error handling capabilities and which are capable of continued operation in the presence of recurring errors. Possible hardware implementation of such a system are explored.Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-12T20:55:13Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1

From terrible to trite… [Review of the book From Trauma to Transformation]
Reviews the book, From Trauma to Transformation by Muriel Prince Warren (see record 2006-03012-000). The reviewer believes this book is a disorganized, rambling, uninformed, and poorly written text. The only reason the reviewer finished reading the book was because of the commitment to write this review. The book's scholarship-or lack of it-is even worse than the book's organization. The author makes mistakes that a good student in an introductory psychology course would know enough to avoid. She does not seem to realize that multiple personality disorder has been termed dissociative identity disorder since at least 1994 (APA, 1994), states that a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) requires two months to have gone by (it is actually one), confuses psychopathy with psychopathology, incorrectly states that there have been no national studies of reactions to 9/11 (see, e.g., Schuster et al., 2001; Silver, Holman, McIntosh, Pouli, & Gil-Rivas, 2002), fails to refer to the critical literature on critical incidental debriefing (e.g., Bisson, 2003), and disregards most of the vast literature on psychological reactions to trauma. It is also remarkable that in a book that "centers on the innovative applications of hypnotherapy to help trauma victims" (back cover), the author fails to even show awareness of international guidelines developed specifically in this regard (Cardeña, Maldonado, Van der Hart, & Spiegel, 2000). The writing is substandard, but here the publisher, Crown House, deserves at least equal blame. One would expect a competent copy editor to know the difference between prostrate and prostate and effect and affect and to know how to spell anecdote, among many other mistakes. More important, the writing is full of incoherent, illogical, and trite statements (among them, that "introspection" is an unconscious process; that hypnosis "relaxes" the amygdala; that after trauma, physiology become biology; and so on). Finally, the reviewer cannot avoid highlighting the deplorably ethnocentric perspective throughout the whole book. The author repeatedly states that we live in a new world because everyone in the United States has been traumatized by the 9/11 attacks, ignoring the fact that many inhabitants throughout the world (including many areas of the United States) have been severely traumatized by other disasters such as war, famine, and physical and sexual violence, among others. This book would not get a passing grade as an undergraduate psychology term paper; why the author and the publisher believed that it was worth publishing surpasses the reviewers comprehension
