Transverse energy measurements in proton-nucleus interactions at high energy
The results of two sets of transverse energy measurements, performed with incident proton beams of 200 and 450 GeV/c momentum on several nuclear targets, are presented. The transverse energy cross sections dσ/dE T are measured in a pseudorapidity range including the target fragmentation region (−0.1<η<2.9) for both data sets and also in a nearly complete pseudorapidity coverage (−0.1<η<5.5) for the data taken at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. A comparison is made of the transverse energy distributions in the target fragmentation region and in the full η region. We find that the mean value of pseudorapidity of the dE T /dη distributions shifts towards the target fragmentation region as the atomic mass number of the target increases or a selection of high transverse energy events is made. A parametrization based on a simple geometrical nucleonnucleon scattering approach was found to be inadequate to describe all features of the transverse energy distributions. Finally, the VENUS model is compared with the experimental data

Study of charged particles associated with high-p/sub T/ photons and pions
We report on the distributions of charged particles produced in association with high p/sub T/ prompt photons and neutral pions in pp collisions at ..sqrt.. s = 63 GeV and theta = 90/sup 0/ in the centre of mass. We find photons to be relatively unaccompained by other particles at small angles with respect to the photon, and thereby extract a measurement of the fraction of prompt photons due to bremsstrahlung production. The relative density of positive to negative particles in the system recoiling from the photon has been measured and compared with QCD motivated calculations

Comparison of high-p/sub T/ particle production in pp and p anti p interactions at the CERN ISR
We have measured the production of neutral and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 2 GeV/c to 6 GeV/c at ..sqrt..s = 63 GeV. Data have been obtained under identical experimental conditions in pp and p anti p collisions. The comparison of the inclusive spectra shows no statistically significant difference over the p/sub T/ range studied
Teaching musculoskeletal examination skills to UK medical students : a comparative survey of Rheumatology and Orthopaedic education practice
Background
Specialists in Rheumatology and Orthopaedics are frequently involved in undergraduate teaching of musculoskeletal (MSK) examination skills. Students often report that specialty-led teaching is inconsistent, confusing and bears little resemblance to the curricula. The Gait, Arms, Legs and Spine (GALS) is a MSK screening tool that provides a standardised approach to examination despite it being fraught with disapproval and low uptake. Recent studies would appear to support innovative instructional methods of engaging learners such as patient educators and interactive small group teaching.
Methods
This comparative cross-sectional survey evaluates the current state of undergraduate teaching in Rheumatology and Orthopaedics, including preferred teaching methods, attitudes towards GALS, and barriers to effective teaching. An electronic questionnaire was sent to specialist trainees and Consultants in the East and West Midlands region, representing 5 UK medical schools. Descriptive statistical data analysis was performed.
Results
There were 76 respondents representing 5 medical schools. There was a request for newer teaching methodologies to be used: multi-media computer-assisted learning (35.5%), audio-visual aids (31.6%), role-playing (19.7%), and social media (3.9%). It is evident that GALS is under-utilised with 50% of clinicians not using GALS in their teaching.
Conclusions
There is a genuine desire for clinical educators to improve their teaching ability, collaborate more with curriculum planners, and feel valued by institutions. There remains a call for implementing a standardised approach to MSK clinical teaching to supersede GALS
Search for top quark production at the CERN p-antip collider
A search has been performed for the production and decay of the top quark: no evidence has been found for such a process implying that the top quark mass is greater than 69 GeV
