Violent Parole and Politics: a study on the revolutionary power of language

Departing from the writings of Wilhelm von Humboldt, this dissertation advances a study on the revolucionary power of language. Being part of what Charles Taylor named the “triple-H tradition”, Humboldt contributes, with Herder and Hamann, to the so-called continental linguistic turn. This linguistic turn occurs in the transition to the 19th century and opens a new paradigm that withdraws the idea that some kind of pre-linguistic thought exists. Instead it is stated that no thought is possible without language and that language (our first language) determines the way we think. Against the Kantian idea of a pure reason, thought is always determined by a specific language that is contingently and historically constructed. From this idea, Humboldt analyses language in its diferentt manifestations, and it is possible to find in his writings four definitions of language: as a universal capacity, as mother tongue or first language, as spoken language, and as dialogue. My work focuses on the third definition of language that I’ll be calling, using saussarian terms and in the continuity of the work developed by Bernhard Sylla, as parole. Focusing my attention in this definition means considering two elements of the dialectic dynamic that is present in language as parole. On the one hand, first language can be seen as a source of oppression in the sense that determines the conditions that can be used by the individual speaker. It settles the grammatical structure, the available vocabulary, the historical baggage that each word carries, etc. Following Humboldt, I will use the German word Macht to mean this kind of violent power. On the other hand, the individual speaker, aware of the langue’s power, tries to find strategies to resist, subvert and modify the langue itself – always in a violent way. To denote this second violent dimension, I will use the German word Gewalt. By using this structure it is possible to speak of a tradition of violent parole, in which we can locate several authors, mostly from the so-called continental philosophy. I have chosen to work on the thought of Martin Heidegger, Roland Barthes, and Richard Rorty, trying to justify that belonging. By starting from this linguistic point of view, this work has a political orientation and the path travelled with these authors intended to provide analytic tools to avance to an analysis of the political language. In doing so, I consider the idea that every political regime uses a specific language to impose and legitimate itself. With this idea in mind, we can think of the political discourse as a langue that imposes itself to its speakers. To identify and characterize specific political languages means to understand the contingent ways in which political regimes assert themselves. We can aplly this idea to the very scheme of philosophical liberalism that, since the French Revolution, shapes our language and, therefore, our thinking. In this historical period, we can identify different political vocabularies, as the classical liberalism or Keynesianism, but I will consider the neoliberal consensus as the most recent vocabulary that frames our thought, and more specifically, I will consider how the austerity measures were imposed in the last years. An analysis of the neoliberal discourse and of the discourse that has legitimate the austerity measures will allow us to understand how language is used to manufacture ways of thinking and consent. I finish my study with the analysis of the second element of that dialetic structure. This element represents the possibility of resistance and freedom against langue’s oppresion. I explore the most important resistance movements of the 20th century, but I shall focus in the most recent demonstrations that have occupied the street as a way of political action. Against the Macht of the political langue, the individual speaker can always resist and violentally try ways of liberation. It is this capacity of language that constitutes its revolucionary power and this capacity was always used to formulate alternative utopias able to embrace communities in a collective project. However I finish with a specific problem: our current times of incertainty pose the question if, beyond modes of popular resistance, new paroles have come to propose new political utopias.

    Heldenplatz by Thomas Bernhard

The play Heldenplatz is the last and one of the most important plays by the Austrian author Thomas Bernhard, and it was published and performed in 1988. It caused a scandal in Austria even before its release due to the presence of critical assertions regarding Austrian post-war society in the text. According to Bernhard, that society had not dealt with its nazist past. This reaction shows Bernhard's view to be correct and it highlights the importance of theatre for society

From matters of fact to matters of concern: a study on Bruno Latour and the importance of listening to non-humans in the face of the New Climatic Regime

In the face of escalating climate change, we find ourselves increasingly confronted not only with what we do, but also with who we are. Modern Western societies claim every day to be moving towards progress, but we must ask: what kind of progress is this? And how will this progress ensure that we continue to have means of subsistence in the near future? These and other questions are raised by Bruno Latour, the author analyzed in this dissertation. Over more than forty years, Latour has developed significant research on the disconnection that has been created between humans and other non-human entities. For the French thinker, this separation is the quintessential modern attitude. Using the tools of philosophy, anthropology, and sociology to analyze scientific practices, Latour deconstructs the ways in which modernity structures its thinking, aiming to show that there can be no separation between what occurs in the natural sphere and in the social sphere. This study leads us to important political conclusions that will also be discussed here. Nevertheless, the main focus of this research is to establish that Latour’s flat ontology is an excellent tool for addressing climate challenges. By reclaiming the figure of Gaia, Latour shows that we can no longer understand our planet as a mere globe. This is a wake-up call for the detached and distant way we view our own means of subsistence. Now, it is crucial that we enter in a war of worlds, where, on one side, are those who understand that we depend on the soil beneath our feet to continue existing, and, on the other, are those who, after completely exhausting this planet’s resources, will look for other places to live beyond terrestrial soil. Latour will help us understand that only one of these sides is correct
