Secure electronic transfer of prescriptions (ETP) for the United Kingdom National Health Service
No full textThis thesis describes an investigation by the author into the provision of a secure Electronic Transfer of Prescriptions (ETP) system for the United Kingdom (UK) National Health Service (NHS). Initially an investigation is carried out into why ETP is needed and the barriers to the successful implementation of an ETP system concentrating both on a literature review of the field and the authors own field analysis work. The author then presents a detailed design for an ETP system including how he has solved the various research issues involved. These research issues include how to create a usable system designed to protect patient privacy. For this research issue the author presents a unique solution, the use of symmetric keys within barcode structures. As part of his research the author has also generated an Application Programming Interface (API) for his design. This can be used in conjunction with previously existing NHS client software to facilitate the adoption of the authors design in practice. Finally, the author details project evaluative work including quantitative performance analysis of the system and qualitative focus group studies. This work was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) under grant number GR/M83483. The work presented in this Thesis forms the basis of multiple research papers which can be found at http:\\sec.isi.salford.ac.uk\

Mapping the Aztec Capital: The 1524 Nuremberg map of Tenochtitlan, Its Sources and Meanings
No full textThe map of Tenochtitlan published along with a Latin version of Heman Cortes\u27s letters (Nuremberg, 1524) was the first picture Europeans had of the Culhua-Mexica city, the capital of the Aztec empire. The source of this woodcut map is unknown, and the author argues here that it was based on an indigenous map of the city. Pragmatism, politics and the politiography of civil wars
No full text While Håvard Strand’s rejoinder to ‘Deconstructing civil wars’ is a welcome invitation to dialogue, its criticisms are grounded in a fundamental misreading of my article. Here I will attempt to address the sources of confusion, which stem from poor execution on my part and some theoretical blinders on the part of the author of the rejoinder. This response will clarify my ethical and theoretical concerns with the way in which mass intra-territorial armed violence has been studied recently, and then reinforce my proposed warrant for a pragmatic ( read: political) turn in the civil war/new war debate. This intervention will conclude by suggesting that the present debate highlights the need for a third estate in political studies, one that operates between political science and political theory: politiography. </jats:p
