Microbial and Biochemical Biofungicides Ineffective Against Alternaria Black Spot on Organic Kale
In South Carolina, the disease black spot on kale is caused by the fungi Alternaria brassicicola and A. japonica. Because all kale cultivars are presumed to be susceptible, organic producers may apply biofungicides to prevent or manage black spot. Microbial and biochemical biofungicides were tested in the greenhouse (12 products) and the field (10 products) against black spot caused by both Alternaria spp. on organically produced kale. Thereafter, three biofungicides (copper hydroxide, potassium silicate, and Reynoutria sachalinensis extract) were tested in the field on three kale cultivars. Although several biofungicides reduced black spot in the greenhouse compared with the water-treated control, no biofungicides did so in the field even though they were applied preventatively before plants were inoculated. Biofungicides also did not increase the weight of healthy leaves compared with the water-treated control in any field experiment. Conversely, two biofungicides that increased the severity and incidence of black spot in the greenhouse, B. amyloliquefaciens F727 and potassium bicarbonate, reduced weights of healthy leaves in the field. On average, curly kale cultivar Winterbor had fewer diseased leaves than curly kale cultivar Darkibor, and lacinato kale cultivar Toscano had fewer diseased leaves than curly kale. Winterbor also consistently produced greater healthy leaf weight than Darkibor. Biopesticides are not recommended against black spot on organic kale. Staging the Abandoned: Open-air Theater Revitalization of Kale Fortress, Skopje
The project site situates at Kale Fortress, a historic archaeological site at the highest point overlooking the city of Skopje. Despite its rich cultural value and prestige location, the site has been abandoned for years since the inter-ethnic conflict between the Macedonians and Albanians in 2011 over the construction on a church-shaped museum. Together with the other three abandoned structures in the Fortress area, I regard them as ‘emotional scars’ neglected by the people. This graduation project seeks to revitalize the Kale Fortress area by converting the abandoned structures into Open-air theatres. By identifying the four abandoned structures as an Anchor and centre of activities, the design aims to reactivate the fortress area by giving a ‘second-life’ to the ‘Modern Heritage’ and acknowledge them as part of the context/ history. Theatre is chosen to be the medium for its nature of expressing and interacting. It also provides a space for reimagination and empathy during performances. It is hoped to give a new perception and memory association of the place being open, generous instead of a taboo to the users. With the main design focus on the Church Museum, the developed design strategy is to be further applied to the rest of the three structures so that the fortress area could be perceived as a whole and accomplish the design intent in a broader context.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science
Low-overhead scheduling for improving performance of scientific applications
Application performance can degrade significantly due to node-local load imbalances during application execution on a large number of SMP nodes. These imbalances can arise from the machine, operating system, or the application itself. Although dynamic load balancing within a node can mitigate imbalances, such load balancing is challenging because of its impact to data movement and synchronization overhead. We developed a series of scheduling strategies that mitigate imbalances without incurring high overhead. Our strategies provide performance gains for various HPC codes, and perform better than widely known scheduling strategies such as OpenMP guided scheduling. Our developed scheme and methodology allows for scaling applications to next-generation clusters of SMPs with minimal application programmer intervention. We expect these techniques to be increasingly useful for future machines approaching exascale.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I only', the embargo will last until 2017-05-01The student, Vivek Kale, accepted the attached license on 2015-04-21 at 12:10.The student, Vivek Kale, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2015-04-21 at 12:22.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2015-04-24 at 10:48.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #7981 on 2015-07-22 at 14:18:24Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T22:33:40Z (GMT). Organic fertilizer comparison on kale (Brassica spp.) varietal growth and nutrient content
2014 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.Selecting supplemental N fertilizer for use on certified organic farms can be difficult and confusing. There are many options commercially available to farmers with similar N concentrations but widely different ingredients. Field experiments on three farms in Fort Collins, CO were conducted to evaluate the impact of a few commonly-used organic fertilizers on kale yield and nutrient concentrations. This study includes a fertilizer under development which is produced on-farm utilizing N-fixing cyanobacteria; this cyanobacterial bio-fertilizer may be a viable choice for farmers in the near future. The three fertilizer treatments (hydrolyzed fish, alfalfa meal and liquid cyanobacteria) were applied at rates calculated by subtracting soil nitrate-N concentration from a target 50 mg/kg. Cyanobacteria and hydrolyzed fish were applied in liquid form while alfalfa was incorporated dry into the soil pre-planting. Biweekly measurements of plant height and chlorophyll content were taken on three varieties of kale, Dinosaur, Red Russian, and Winterbor. Leaf weight, leaf area, N, Fe and Zn concentrations were measured during four monthly harvests. Organized in a split-plot experimental design, each farm had 3 treatment replications with subplots of different kale varieties. No significant effects were found on plant height, leaf weight, leaf area, N, Fe or Zn concentrations among fertilizer types. There were varietal differences in plant height, leaf area, and general performance as well as resistance to pest pressure. Residual N in each subplot was measured after this study and showed significant difference among varieties. Kale variety choice seems to have a much larger impact on yield and nutrient concentrations than fertilizer choice, as long as fertilizers are applied at similar N rates
A Systematic Review on Author Identification Methods
Author Identification is a technique for identifying author of anonymous text. It has near about 130 year's long history, started with the work by Mendenhall 1987. Applications of Author identification include plagiarism detection, detecting anonymous author, in forensics and so on. In this paper the authors outline features used for Author identification like vocabulary, syntactic and others. Researchers worked on various methods for Author identification they also outline this paper on types of Author Identification methods that include 1. Profile-based Approaches which includes Probabilistic Models, Compression Models, Common n-Grams (CNG) approach, 2. Instance-based Approaches which includes Vector Space Models, Similarity-based Models, Meta-learning Models and 3. Hybrid Approaches. At the end the authors conclude this paper with observations and future scope.</p
“No somos gitanos”: Cracking the Code of the Kale Blacksmiths of Early Modern Triana
This ethnographically informed micro-history focuses on the Romani (Kale) blacksmiths of the Triana neighborhood in Seville in the long sixteen century, emphasizing the importance of place for this community. So often the Romani are generally assumed to have little connection to a singular location because they are “inherently nomadic wanderers.” They are portrayed in paintings, plays, poems, and laws as drifters who seek the freedom of the road to the detriment of society. This dissertation presents a starkly different reality of these blacksmithing families from Triana, focusing on this neighborhood as it was home to a notable Kale population since their arrival into the Iberian Peninsula in the fifteenth century. By focusing at the community level we now see specific ways in which this group, often assumed to exist at the margins, in fact played a central role in a centrally important trade for the ever-expanding Spanish Empire. These families, living on Castilla Street for approximately 150 years were experts in producing screws and other small iron works known as chapurrería. It appears that the Kale blacksmiths of Triana were the primary producers of small iron works in the city of Seville for centuries, and specifically for various types of ships constructed and repaired in Seville’s bustling ship building industry. The research for this dissertation is archivally based but also draws from evidence of material culture to connect Kalo individuals who would have otherwise remained historically invisible. This dissertation will also explore the process of ethnic reclassification which has contributed to the archival invisibility of the Kale, touching on the concept of race in early modern Spain. This work brings to light the story of a community who has remained largely invisible, but who played an important role in the Spanish economy both in Spain and the Americas.Embargo status: Restricted until 01/2174. REPRESENTASI KEKERASAN TERHADAP PEREMPUAN DALAM BERPACARAN (STUDI KASUS: FILM “STORY OF KALE: WHEN SOMEONE’S IN LOVE” DAN “POSESIF”)

This study aims to describe the forms of violence against women using Roland
Barthes's semiotic analysis in the films “Story of Kale: When Someone's in Love” and
“Posesif”, and explain how patriarchal practices perpetuate violence against women.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method and is carried out
using films as research objects and analyzing using Roland Barthes’s semiotics. This
research was conducted in September 2022. Data collection techniques in the form of
film observation, film documentation in the form of screenshots of scenes contained in
the film, non-formal interviews with three viewers and literature study. This research
was also strengthened by triangulation informants by a lecturer of FFTV IKJ, namely
Mrs. EA.
In this study, the author took 13 scenes from the movie "Story of Kale" and 14 scenes
from the movie "Posesif" that depict violence against women. The author found forms
of violence against women in the films "Story of Kale" and "Posesif", namely emotional
violence in the form of yelling, insulting, threatening both verbally and physically,
controlling, manipulating, and silent surveillance. Physical violence in the form of
gripping the face and body, pushing the body, grabbing, and choking. Sexual violence
in the form of unwanted kissing attempts. Deprivation of liberty in the form of
restrictions on women's lives, and physical restraint. These forms of violence point to
a patriarchal culture. Although the perception of patriarchal culture depends on each
individual in interpreting it, the results of the author's analysis show that male
characters in both films lead to patriarchal cultural practices that weaken women and
seem to perpetuate violence against women through the process of internalizing values
and norms that become habitual and normalized by societ
