Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Ambas são formas do pensamento simbólico, que se manifesta sob dois aspectos da cultura fundamentais: a orientação humana e a expressão de seus afetos. Esta pesquisa buscou investigar a relação entre arte e magia como funções polares que exprimem o \"espaço de pensamento\" [Denkraum], bem como a identificação warburguiana do mote \"Per monstra ad sphaeram\" como uma lei. O objetivo foi estabelecer uma ponte entre tal lei, o papel da memória no arcabouço conceitual de Warburg e a centralidade do conceito de polaridade, que justifica o epíteto dado pelo próprio autor a sua pesquisa: \"iconologia dos intervalos\".Both art and magic operate, for Warburg, the passage from phobia to orientation, promoted by a language that rationalizes it. Both are forms of symbolic thought, which are manifested in two fundamental aspects of culture: human orientation and the expression of affections. This research sought to investigate the relationship between art and magic as polar functions that express the \"space of thought\" [Denkraum], as well as the Warburgian identification of the motto \"Per monstra ad sphaeram\" as a law. The objective was to establish a bridge between this law, the role of memory in Warburg\'s conceptual framework and the centrality of the concept of polarity, which justifies the epithet given by the author to his research: \"iconology of intervals\"

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textA proposta estruturante deste trabalho é problematizar, em diferentes temas, o lugar das preocupações estéticas ou sensíveis nos textos de Kant à luz de A Educação Estética do Homem. Partindo sempre da letra de Kant, elaboramos as questões e as posturas desse autor no que diz respeito ao campo estético no modo da escrita kantiana, na formulação dos princípios morais e na promoção da tarefa moral entre os homens. O nosso objetivo é, por um lado, ressaltar a importância dessas questões e, por outro lado, mostrar a possibilidade de, sem desrespeitar os princípios kantianos, assumir posturas distintas das de Kant. Nesse empreendimento, Schiller, enquanto poeta-filósofo ou filósofo-poeta, mostra-se sobretudo na obra supracitada o autor que, de maneira destacável, compreende os princípios da razão e defende uma postura original de exercitá-los. Reconhecendo que a sensibilidade não tem muito a acrescentar na fundamentação de princípios racionais defendida pelo entendimento analítico, Schiller reserva-lhe um papel totalmente diferente no que se refere ao desafio humano de agir segundo tais princípios num mundo em que as contingências nunca se fazem ausentes (num mundo ininterruptamente pulsante). Se a compreensão exata da legislação da razão necessita atravessar o caminho escolástico ou analítico das Críticas, sendo, portanto, acessível a poucos homens, a tarefa da razão necessita se apresentar como exequível a todo e qualquer homem que a queira. Não se trata aqui de afirmar que a educação estética executa melhor essa tarefa que o projeto do esclarecimento, mas apenas que aquela educação, embora se coloque numa perspectiva plenamente humana, não representa um perigo à pureza ou incondicionalidade da razão.The main purpose of this work is to discuss, on different themes, the place of aesthetic or sensitive concerns in Kant\'s texts since the Letters upon Aesthetic Education of Man. Always starting from the letter of Kant\'s philosophy, we prepared the issues and postures of this author with regard to the aesthetic field in Kant\'s writing style, in the formulation of moral principles and the promotion of moral task among men. Our objective is, on the one hand, stress the importance of these issues and, on the other hand, show the possibility of, without breaching the Kantian principles, assume different postures of Kant. In this endeavor, Schiller, as a poet-philosopher or philosopher-poet, shows - especially in the aforementioned work - the author who, in a remarkable way, understands the principles of reason and defends a unique position to apply them. Schiller acknowledges that the sensitivity does not have much to add in the grounds of rational principles defended by the analytical understanding. Regarding the human challenge to act on these principles in a pulsating world, where contingencies are never absent, Schiller assigns to the sensitivity a totally different role. If the exact understanding of the legislation of reason need to go through the scholastic or analytical way of Kants Critiques, and need be accessible to few men, the task of reason needs to present itself as feasible to every man who wants to. It is not about asserting that the aesthetic education performs better this task than the project of enlightenment, but only that such education, although it puts a fully human perspective, does not represent a danger to the purity and absoluteness of reason
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textO presente trabalho procura entender como Anthony Ashley Cooper (o Terceiro Conde de Shaftesbury) concebeu a noção de caráter moderno a partir da análise de alguns elementos de sua filosofia, a saber: a relação entre o gênero humano e a natureza, a formação da identidade individual e a de uma época, o vínculo entre a questão da escritura e a atividade filosófica. Cada um dos três capítulos de nosso estudo foi dedicado (respectivamente) a um desses assuntos. Tendo como base Os moralistas, a Investigação sobre a virtude e a Carta sobre o entusiasmo, o primeiro capítulo busca examinar o vínculo que Shaftesbury estabelece entre o homem e o sistema da natureza, ou seja: como o gênero humano se relaciona com o universo e qual é o seu papel no interior do mundo natural. A partir da idéia shaftesburiana de solilóquio (exposta no texto que leva o mesmo nome: Solilóquio ou conselho a um autor), o segundo capítulo procura compreender como o filósofo inglês pensa o liame entre o que ele mesmo denomina processo de personificação e o surgimento das artes, da filosofia e da identidade de uma época. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo visa mostrar que a questão da polidez e do aprimoramento do gosto não apenas foi um dos principais temas da obra do filósofo inglês, como também está intimamente ligada à sua concepção de filosofia.The object of this thesis is the philosophy of Anthony Ashley Cooper, third earl of Shaftesbury, and more specifically the conception it presents of a modern character. Shaftesbury\'s understanding of modernity in philosophical terms is present in at least three of the main themes of his philosophy: the relation between mankind and nature, the formation of the individual character as a component of the character of the times, the bounds that tie philosophical reflection to the art of writing. The first chapter of the thesis examines Shaftesbury understanding of man\'s role in the natural world, or the relations between mankind as a species and nature as a system. The focus is on The moralists, a philosophical rhapsody, An inquiry concerning virtue or merit and A letter of enthusiasm. The second chapter deals with the text of Soliloquy, or advice to an author, in order to show how Shaftesbury conceives the process of personification as the precondition for the rising of the arts (including philosophy) which in turn are taken as the defining element of the character of the times. The third chapter shows that politeness and the refinement of taste, far from being mere motifs of fashion, are understood by Shaftesbury as philosophical topics of major importance. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
