I was doing something I didn't even think I could do: Crystal Lee Sutton and the campaign to unionize J.P. Stevens
Crystal Lee Sutton played a prominent role in the labor movement's struggle to organize southern workers in the J.P. Stevens' textile mills in the 1970s. The movie Norma Rae, based on her story, vaulted her into the national spotlight. Sutton's story provides a window into how the labor movement, second-wave feminism, and the Civil Rights Movement intersected in the southern mill towns targeted by the Textile Workers Union of America. An examination of her personal papers, union records, and media coverage reveals that gendered assumptions, racial and class hierarchies, and local, intimate networks of power and knowledge structured and informed her resistance and reactions to it. Sutton provided the union with significant support as she struggled to balance the responsibilities of worker, mother, wife, and unionist. As the real Norma Rae, she negotiated with multiple institutions and people for control over the meaning of her activism

The systematic variation found in crustal thickness in the Hawaiian Islands is explainable by a hypothesis of differential subsidence. The crustal structure of northern Melanesia points to tensional forces in an east-west direction and compressional forces in a north-south direction. In the Central Pacific Basin, a 7.4 km/sec layer in the lower crust seems to be present over a wide area
Wear modelling of diamond-like carbon coatings against steel in deionised water
Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings are thin protective surface coatings used to reduce friction and minimise wear in a wide range of applications. The focus of this work is the use of DLC coatings within Rolls-Royce’s pressurised water reactors. A strong understanding of material behaviour in this environment is compulsory due to the stringent safety requirements of the nuclear industry. Wear testing of a range of commercial DLC coatings against steel in water, and the dependence of the tribology on normal load, sliding distance, and environmental species, was examined. Wear depth was observed to increase with normal load, and increase non-linearly with sliding distance. Uniquely, it was suggested that the tribology of a DLC coating in water was controlled by the velocity accommodation mode (VAM) of the transfer layer. When interfacial sliding was the dominant VAM, the carbonaceous transfer layer was present at all times, and a low specific wear rate was observed. When shear and recirculation of debris was the dominant VAM, the carbonaceous transfer layer initially present was replaced by iron oxide species, and a high specific wear rate was observed as a result of a three-body mechanism involving hematite.Two individual wear models were developed to predict the wear depth of a DLC coating sliding against steel in water. Each model represents a novel extension to the current literature regarding the modelling of wear. Firstly, an analytical differential equation was derived to predict the wear depth of a ball and a flat surface, in relation to any phenomenological law for wear volume. Secondly, a unique formulation of an incremental wear model for an arbitrary geometry was developed for a DLC coating which included the growth of a transfer layer. An efficient methodology was presented to allow fast integration of the equations whilst damping numerical instabilities. A comparison between the analytic and computational wear models showed a strong agreement in the model predictions, with a comparative error of less than 5%

Entrainment and detrainment rates from the piv measurements at the top of laboratory analogs of stratocumulus and cumulus clouds
We analyze mixing at the top of laboratory analogs of convective clouds: stratocumulus and cumulus to investigate entrainment of environmental air into the cloud. We retrieve two components of air velocity using Particle Image Velocimetry technique. Suitable image processing allows to determine cloud–clear air interface. Using velocity differences between cloudy and clear sides of the interface we calculate entrainment / detrainment rates
Vortex Dynamics in The Transitional and Turbulent Wake of 6:1 Prolate Spheroid at 45-deg incidence angle
The incompressible flow past a 6:1 prolate spheroid with an inclination angle of 45o at Re = 3,000 has been studied by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). The Reynolds number is based on the inflow velocity and minor-axis length. The preliminary results presented here are focused mainly on vortex dynamics and vortical structures in the wake. The wake behind this configuration starts almost symmetric but is soon strongly deflected and bent as it evolves to the intermediate wake. A pair of unequal-strength vortices dominates the intermediate wake, of which one exhibits the shape of a long vortex tube while the other rapidly breaks down into turbulent-like vortical structures
An open randomized comparison of clinical effectiveness of protocol-driven opioid analgesia, celiac plexus block or thoracoscopic splanchnicectomy for pain management in patients with pancreatic and other abdominal malignancies
In inoperable malignancy, pain relief with opioids is often inadequate. Nerve block procedures may improve symptom control. Our aim was to assess celiac plexus block (CPB) and thoracoscopic splanchnicectomy (TS) in patients receiving appropriate medical management (MM). Methods: Patients with confirmed irresectable malignancy of the pancreas or upper abdominal viscera who required opioid analgesia were randomized to MM alone, MM+CPB, or MM+TS. Randomization was stratified by treatment centre, tumour type and previous opioid medication. The primary endpoint was pain relief at 2 months. Results: 65 patients (58 pancreas cancer) were randomized, 18 withdrew or died within 2 months. Effective pain relief was achieved in only one third of subjects at 2 weeks, and just under half at 2 months (MM: 6/19 and 5/12 evaluable patients; CPB: 5/14 and 5/9; TS 4/14 and 4/11). There were no significant differences between the groups in pain scores or opioid consumption, and there was no correlation between continued use of opioids and effective pain relief. Discussion: Previous randomized studies have shown small differences in pain scores, but no difference in opioid consumption and quality of life. The absence of any benefit from interventions in the present study questions their value
Experimental characterisation of large scale structures in a high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layer
A very large field of view (4δ x 1δ) with a good spatial resolution owing to the use of four 2k x 2k pixel cameras was conducted in a flat plate boundary layer at two Reynolds numbers (Reθ ≈7,500 and 20,000). Comparing the flow statistics with previously obtained hot-wire data under similar flow conditions show good agreement. The goal of this experiment is to detect and characterise the large scale motions which develop in the log region of a high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layer
