Personal Vehicles Evaluated against Climate Change Mitigation Targets
Meeting global climate change mitigation goals will likely require that transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions begin to decline within the next two decades and then continue to fall. A variety of vehicle technologies and fuels are commercially available to consumers today that can reduce the emissions of the transportation sector. Yet what are the best options, and do any suffice to meet climate policy targets? Here, we examine the costs and carbon intensities of 125 light-duty vehicle models on the U.S. market today and evaluate these models against U.S. emission-reduction targets for 2030, 2040, and 2050 that are compatible with the goal of limiting mean global temperature rise to 2 °C above preindustrial levels. Our results show that consumers are not required to pay more for a low-carbon-emitting vehicle. Across the diverse set of vehicle models and powertrain technologies examined, a clean vehicle is usually a low-cost vehicle. Although the average carbon intensity of vehicles sold in 2014 exceeds the climate target for 2030 by more than 50%, we find that most hybrid and battery electric vehicles available today meet this target. By 2050, only electric vehicles supplied with almost completely carbon-free electric power are expected to meet climate-policy targets
Origin of Efficiency Roll-Off in Colloidal Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes
We study the origin of efficiency roll-off (also called “efficiency droop”) in colloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes through the comparison of quantum-dot (QD) electroluminescence and photoluminescence. We find that an electric-field-induced decrease in QD luminescence efficiency—and not charge leakage or QD charging (Auger recombination)—is responsible for the roll-off behavior, and use the quantum confined Stark effect to accurately predict the external quantum efficiency roll-off of QD light-emitting diodes.United States. Mapping conflicts of interest between universities and fossil fuel interests.
The fossil fuel industry has historically impeded climate action through sophisticated strategies such as greenwashing, lobbying, and disinformation. A less acknowledged but still significant aspect of this obstructionism lies in the industry’s alignment with academic institutions. There is a growing body of evidence indicating that the interests of the fossil fuel industry are deeply intertwined with universities around the world. These connections manifest in various forms, including but not limited to financial contributions, targeted recruitment events, and personnel overlap. While student organizations, activists, and investigative journalists have started to shed light on these potential conflicts of interest, there remains a conspicuous lack of formal, peer-reviewed studies addressing this topic. This thesis describes a first-of-its-kind effort to investigate the scope of entanglements between higher education and fossil fuel interests. It introduces and validates a comprehensive typology designed to facilitate the systematic gathering and critical analysis of data on this phenomenon at a large scale. The typology ultimately housed seven broad classifications of ties and a series of subtypes of ties under each one. This framework serves as the technical foundation for a real-world survey, which will map ties at universities worldwide
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Enhancing quantum-dot luminescence in visible and infrared light emitting devices

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 137-160).We investigate how the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of colloidal quantum-dot light emitting devices (QD-LEDs) can be enhanced by addressing in situ QD photoluminescence (PL) quenching mechanisms occurring with and without applied bias. QD-LEDs promise efficient, high colour-quality solid-state lighting and displays, and our cost analysis of industrial-scale QD synthesis suggests they can be cost competitive. Efficiency 'roll-off' at high biases is among the most enduring challenges facing all LED technologies today. It stands in the way of high efficiencies at high brightness, yet it has not previously been studied in QD-LEDs. Simultaneous measurements of QD electroluminescence (EL) and PL in an operating device allow us to show for the first time that EQE roll-off in QD-LEDs derives from the QD layer itself, and that it is entirely due to a bias-driven reduction in QD PL quantum yield. Using the quantum confined Stark Effect as a signature of local electric fields in our devices, the bias-dependence of EQE is predicted and found to be in excellent agreement with the roll-off observed. We therefore conclude that electric field-induced QD PL quenching fully accounts for roll-off in our QD-LEDs. To investigate zero-bias PL quenching, we fabricate a novel near-infrared (NIR)-emitting device based on core-shell PbS-CdS QDs synthesised via cation exchange. QDs boast high PL quantum yield at wavelengths beyond 1 [mu]m, making them uniquely suited to NIR applications such as optical telecommunications and computing, bio-medical imaging, and on-chip bio(sensing) and spectroscopy. Core-shell PbS-CdS QDs enhance the peak EQE of core-only PbS control devices by 50- to 100-fold, up to 4.3 %. This is more than double the efficiency of previous NIR QD-LEDs, making it the most efficient thin-film NIR light source reported. PL measurements reveal that the efficiency enhancement is due to passivation of the PbS core by the CdS shell against a non-radiative recombination pathway caused by a neighboring conductive layer within the device architecture.by Geoffrey James Sasajima Supran.Ph. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
