Reconstructing Chineseness: Chinese Media and Chinese Identity in PostReform Indonesia
The fall of Suharto in 1998 brought winds of change to Indonesia, especially to policies concerning the Chinese. After being suppressed under the Suharto regime, Chinese Indonesians suddenly had an opportunity to express their cultural heritage in their own ethnic media, counter negative stereotypes and reconstruct an identity that had been virtually erased during the Suharto era. In this article, author examines the discursive practices Chinese Indonesians use to remould their ethnic identity through an analysis of the media strategies used to reinvigorate the Chinese Indonesian identity. It was found from the Chinese media, as exemplified in Qiandao Ribao, Guoji Ribao and Yindunixiya Shangbao, that the re-creation of the Chinese identity requires an understanding of what it was to be Chinese through the use of the symbols most salient to Chinese ethnicity. The media have been strongly geared towards the reconstruction and maintenance of a Chinese identity that sees Chinese Indonesians as an imagined community whose ethnicity is symbolically perceived and maintained through frequent exposure to the ethnic media. By being exposed to the ethnic media, Chinese Indonesian readers can feel a sense of ethnic belonging and identity through perceived affiliation and shared symbols. However, although they succeeded in bringing Chinese culture back to the Indonesian public sphere, the diversity in the Chinese community challenges the media efforts to construct a definitive Chinese identity
Abstract
Women and marriage life seem to be time-honored topics in literature. However, since literary texts are a contestation of power that cannot be separated from social, cultural, and political interest, the way male writers treat these topics are usually different from the way female writers do. This occurs because each writers personal experiences influence his/her works heavily. One writer whose experiences as a woman affect her writings in exploring women and marriage life is Catherine Lim, a Chinese Singaporean. By analyzing her work using the perspective of anthropology of literature, this paper exposes how Catherine Lim explores womens marriage life as a vehicle for raising awareness on the patriarchal ideology and power relation that still fetter women. The finding shows that despite living in an advanced society and women being treated as equal to men, social institutions still objectify women, both in the private and public sphere. Womens objectification are consistently carried out in such a way that women have no other choice but accept the objectification. But, when they realize the effects of the objectification, they have no power over their own body
RECONSTRUCTING WOMANHOOD IN TONY MORRISON'S BELOVED
Tony Morrison's fifth novel, Beloved (1987), explores the degradation of slavery imposed upon slaves, even when they were owned by a "humane" slave master. The novel is set in the Reconstruction period, the period after the American civil war. The word reconstruction may be used for the Afro-Americans, especially for the Afro-American women who face double discrimination for being black and women. In dealing with women's oppression, Afro-American women have to reconstruct themselves as an act of survival, and to be aware of the horrors of the experiences which their ancestors had to go through
Teater Sebagai Media untuk Pengabdian Masyarakat
Theater is not just a performing art that has aesthetic function, as a phrase, art for art, reflects. It also has a connection with the social community outside the art world. In this paper, through the discipline of educational anthropology, I examine the use of theater as a medium for service-learning, a project I conducted in 2015-2016. In this project, students were asked to work together with members of community involved to write a script based on their experiences. This script is expected to reflect their understanding and interpretation on the social and cultural problems of the society where they lived. My analysis shows that theater as a medium for service-learning could give a valuable opportunity for students to foster their social responsibility and awareness. It also helps students understand the social problems of the society, and document their understanding through theatrical process. This results in developing the cultural agency of the students and members of community involved
Reflections on the Ethno-religious Identities of Chinese Indonesian Muslims
Studies on the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia usually discuss this group of people from economic or political perspectives. However, there are other aspects of this community that can be explored further. In this paper, I analyze the Chinese in Indonesia from the religious perspective, namely, Islam. The analysis is based on a case study of the ethno religious identity of Chinese Indonesian Muslims. The life-narrative of seven respondents is used as a lens through which ways of how the ethno-religious identities of Chinese Indonesian Muslims are formulated and reasons of why being Chinese and being Muslims are presented in ways as such are examined. I propose that this group of people could be categorized into three types, namely, the syncretistic, the non-negotiating, and the negotiating
Watching Chinese Indonesians through the Lens of Camera
Life narratives have been the object of anthropological studies for decades, as they are used for understanding societies and cultures. While the common method for studying them has been ethnographic research techniques, some scholars have proposed that photography and pictures can be used as a tool in doing the life narratives. This idea finds support in the field of visual anthropology, in which photo-elicitation techniques are mostly used in data collection. In this paper, I use a collection of photographs taken from 1972 to 2001 by Paul Piollet – an enthusiast photographer who has traveled extensively in Indonesia – as as a cultural inventory of the lives of Chinese Indonesians. Drawing from the disciplines of anthropology, I discuss how the lives of Chinese Indonesians are far from the stereotypical portrayal of the Chinese, which was prevalent during the New Order era and to certain extent still exists today. I show how these photographs expose the “unseen colors” of the lives of the Chinese in Indonesia, that is, the lives that the Indonesian society may not relate to the Chinese because they are the everyday life of ordinary people in Indonesia

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: TIMOTHY MO'S SOUR SWEET
Timothy Mo is an Anglochinese writer who writes much about the experiences that immigrants face in their new country, and how they overcome the problems and culture shocks that come up, as well as how they define their identity. In his novel, Sour Sweet, Mo describes how three characters who come from Hong Kong, Chen, Lily, and Mui, with their all character traits live their lives in the United Kingdom. This paper discusses how the three characters respond to their new environment. Because of different character traits and ability to cope with changes, they respond to the culture and society of the UK differently. There is one who holds the old culture tightly without trying to understand the new culture in the new place, there is one who rejects the old culture and adapts the life in the UK in an uncritical manner, yet there is one who tries to find the equilibrium between the old and the new. By showing the flexibility towards the changes and the influence of foreign culture, Mo emphasizes in the need of accommodative attitude and tolerance towards the multicultural reality in this modern world
