Word- or root-derived? A semantic test for instrumental denominal verbs in Italian
Denominal verbs, in spite of their name, can be derived from either a noun or a root. In non-morphologically transparent languages, only semantic cues help distinguishing the two classes, i.e., the entailment of existence of the corresponding noun (Kiparsky 1982, 1997). In this work, we present a novel semantic test which is the first attempt at distinguishing noun-derived from root-derived Instrumental Denominal Verbs (IDV) on a purely semantic basis, overcoming the flaws observed in previous syntactic tests. By explicitly asking Italian native speakers to mention the instruments that can be used to perform the action denoted by the verb, we measured the entailment of existence through the number of instrument nouns produced and the frequency of production of the corresponding instrument noun. Our test also contained parasynthetic verbs, whose behavior was influenced by the interaction between their derivation process and their meaning
Instrument syntactic realization in Italian and LIS A cross-modal comparative study and implications for interpreting practice
This study compares how instruments are syntactically realized in Italian and LIS, using a cross-modal comparative approach. In Italian, Instruments are syntactically realized only when they are not recoverable from the verb. Three Instrument types are
identified: shadow, default, and open. Only shadow Instruments are incorporated into the verbal root. As for LIS, our analysis reveals that shadow Instruments are preferred and finer-grained compared to Italian, probably due to visual modality. This has implications for Italian-to-LIS interpretation, as interpreters might make a wrong choice when Italian does not specify, but LIS requires a shadow Instrument
What Makes an Agent an Agent?
This study investigates the defining properties of Agents and the interplay of syntax and semantics in semantic inferences, based on Dowty’s Proto-Role Hypothesis. Five properties from Dowty’s list were selected, and 39 Italian sentence pairs showing the Instrument-subject Alternation were created. 93 participants rated how much Agents, Instrument-subjects, Instrument-PPs and Patients exhibit each property. Results show that while some properties are sensitive to syntactic realization, others are linked to lexical semantics and world knowledge, supporting the view that semantic inferences arise from an interaction between syntax and semantics
I pronomi clitici e la diagnosi del Disturbo del Linguaggio in età evolutiva: sull’utilizzo del clitico “ci”
According to the scientific literature, the impaired production of third-person clitics represents a signature of Developmental Language Disorder in Italian-speaking children. Building upon previous findings, this paper aims at investigating the potential role of the Italian ci morpheme as a clinical marker for the disorder. To this goal, we developed a novel elicitation test focused on the pronoun to explore its production by five-year-old typically developing children. Our findings, though preliminary, are relevant to shed light i) on the acquisitional patterns of this morpheme and ii) on a methodological issue, namely the difficulty of eliciting non-obligatory elements
The acquisition of the clitic ci among typically developing Italian preschoolers: preliminary data
This paper explores the acquisitional patterns of the Italian ci morpheme and its potential role as a clinical marker for Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in Italian-speaking children, taking into account its distributional, sociolinguistic, and typological properties. To this purpose, we (i) administered a test for the elicited production of clitic pronouns in Italian – which we will refer to as “T-PEC” in the following – to 126 school-aged Italian speakers and (ii) developed a novel test focused on the ci morpheme in order to investigate its production by five-year-old typically developing children. The results and their theoretical interpretations are of particular interest since they could shed light on the acquisition of the morpheme, thus helping understand both typical and atypical grammar development. Given the continuity of the two, it could also be applied to the diagnosis and rehabilitation of DLD, which remains a major challenge for child neuropsychiatrists, psychologists, and speech-language therapists. This paper explores the acquisitional patterns of the Italian ci morpheme and its potential role as a clinical marker for Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in Italian-speaking children, taking into account its distributional, sociolinguistic, and typological properties.
Variazioni sono state osservate in reazione a tre discorsi tenuti dal Presidente del Consiglio rispettivamente il 4 marzo, il 9 marzo e il 26 aprile 2020.This paper aims at investigating the impact of institutional communications during the health crisis due to Covid-19 pandemic in Italy, through the analysis of micro-blogging activities on Twitter by means of NLP techniques. We performed a Sentiment Analysis on the TWITA corpus, to pinpoint potential correlations between opinion polarity (positive or negative) of the users and public speeches during the outbreak. Our findings show changes in sentiment polarity related to three institutional speeches delivered by the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on March, 4th, March, 9th, and April, 26th 2020
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
