Tuning polybenzimidazole membrane by immobilizing a novel ionic liquid with superior oxygen reduction reaction kinetics
Protic ionic liquid (PIL) is a promising nonaqueous electrolyte alternative to replacing phosphoric acid for fuel cells operating at temperatures above 100 °C. In this study, the physical and electrochemical properties of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric PILs are investigated focusing on their acid/base ratio. The study involves a series of PILs, generically indicated as N,N-diethyl-3-sulfopropane-1-ammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([DESPA+][TfO-]), varying from an excess of the proton acceptor (N,N-diethyl-3-aminopropane-1-sulfonic acid) to an excess of the proton donor (trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, TfOH). Compared to a state-of-the-art electrolyte, i.e., concentrated phosphoric acid, the nonstoichiometric [DESPA+][TfO-] shows superior oxygen reduction reaction kinetics on the investigated Pt catalysts and oxygen permeation ability (DO2·cO2). [DESPA+][TfO-] with a base-to-acid molar ratio of 1:2 achieves a current density ∼10 times larger than that of concentrated phosphoric acid at 110 °C and 0.8 V. Membranes including polybenzimidazole as a host polymer and stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric [DESPA+][TfO-] as the conductive electrolyte exhibit promising properties in terms of thermal stability and conductivity. At 120 °C and 40% relative humidity, conductivities of 2 and 16 mS cm.1 are achieved by the membranes employing stoichiometric and excess acid [DESPA+][TfO-], respectively

Effect of pasta shape and gluten on pasta cooking quality and structural breakdown during mastication
Oral processing behaviour of food is affected by the structural characteristics of the food matrix, including rheological and mechanical attributes as well as the size and shape. Pasta, a staple starchy food, may have a very similar macrostructure (shape) but a very different microstructure in gluten-containing (GC) and gluten-free (GF) products. In this context, this study aims to investigate the effect of pasta shape (in the presence and absence of gluten) on cooking/textural properties, chewing behaviour and structural breakdown during oral processing. The results suggest that the shape and presence of gluten affect not only the pasta texture but also the mastication behavior with gluten significantly increasing the mastication effort whereas a small pasta shape may trigger swallowing of almost not masticated pieces. The shape and gluten can therefore be used as a strategy to modulate chewing behavior, with possible effects on both perception and intake
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Joint estimation of isoform expression and isoform-specific read distribution using multisample RNA-Seq data.
MOTIVATION:
RNA-sequencing technologies provide a powerful tool for expression analysis at gene and isoform level, but accurate estimation of isoform abundance is still a challenge. Standard assumption of uniform read intensity would yield biased estimates when the read intensity is in fact non-uniform. The problem is that, without strong assumptions, the read intensity pattern is not identifiable from data observed in a single sample.
RESULTS:
We develop a joint statistical model that accounts for non-uniform isoform-specific read distribution and gene isoform expression estimation. The main challenge is in dealing with the large number of isoform-specific read distributions, which potentially are as many as the number of splice variants in the genome. A statistical regularization via a smoothing penalty is imposed to control the estimation. Also, for identifiability reasons, the method uses information across samples from the same region. We develop a fast and robust computational procedure based on the iterated-weighted least-squares algorithm, and apply it to simulated data and two real RNA-Seq datasets with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction validation. Empirical tests show that our model performs better than existing methods in terms of increasing precision in isoform-level estimation.
AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION:
We have implemented our method in an R package called Sequgio as a pipeline for fast processing of RNA-Seq data
