Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

A search for the first massive galaxy clusters

Get PDF
We have obtained deep, multi-band imaging observations around three of the most distant known quasars at redshifts z > 6. Standard accretion theory predicts that the supermassive black holes present in these quasars were formed at a very early epoch. If a correlation between black hole mass and dark matter halo mass is present at these early times, then these rare supermassive black holes will be located inside the most massive dark matter halos. These are therefore ideal locations to search for the first clusters of galaxies. We use the Lyman-break technique to identify star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. Our observations show no overdensity of star-forming galaxies in the fields of these quasars. The lack of (dust-free) luminous starburst companions indicates that the quasars may be the only massive galaxies in their vicinity undergoing a period of intense activity

High-temporal resolution optical observations of the gamma-ray blazar PG 1553+113

AbstractWe present here the results of an observational photo-polarimetry campaign at optical wavelengths of the blazar PG 1553+113, which was recently detected at very high energies (>100 GeV) by the H.E.S.S and MAGIC γ-ray experiments. Our high-temporal resolution data show significant variations in the linear polarization percentage and position angle at inter-night time-scales, while at shorter (intra-night) time-scales both parameters varied less significantly, if at all. Simultaneous differential photometry (at the B and R bands) shows no significant variability in the total optical flux.</jats:p

The Influence of Black Hole Mass and Accretion Rate on the FRI/FRII Radio Galaxy Dichotomy

No full text
We use medium resolution optical spectra of 3CR radio galaxies to estimate their black hole masses and accretion rates. Black hole masses are found from central stellar velocity dispersions, and accretion rates are derived from narrow emission-line luminosities. The sample covers both Fanaroff-Riley (FR) classes; the more powerful FRIIs and the less powerful FRIs. We find that FRIs and FRIIs separate in diagrams of radio luminosity and narrow-line luminosity versus black hole mass. This suggests that, at a given black hole mass, the FRIIs accrete more efficiently, or accrete more matter, than FRIs

Radiation from matter entrainment in astrophysical jets: the AGN case

Get PDF
AbstractJets are found in a variety of astrophysical sources. In all the cases the jet propagates with a supersonic velocity through the external medium, which can be inhomogeneous, and inhomogeneities could penetrate into the jet. The interaction of the jet material with an obstacle produces a bow-like shock within the jet in which particles can be accelerated up to relativistic energies and emit high-energy photons. In this work, we explore the active galactic nuclei scenario, focusing on the dynamical and radiative consequences of the interaction at different jet heights. We find that the produced high-energy emission could be detectable by the current γ-ray telescopes. In general, the jet-clump interactions are a possible mechanism to produce (steady or flaring) high-energy emission in many astrophysical sources in which jets are present.</jats:p

POLARIZATION MEASUREMENT OF GRB 041219A WITH SPI

Measuring the polarization of the prompt gamma-ray emission from GRBs can signicantly improve our understanding of both the GRB emission mechanisms, as well as of the underlying engine driving the explosion. We searched for polarization in the prompt gamma-ray emission of GRB 041219a with the SPI instrument. Using multiple detector coincidence events in the 100–350 keV energy band, our analysis yields a polarization fraction from this GRB of 98 +-33%. Statistically, we cannot claim a polarization detection from this source. We cannot strongly rule out the possibility that the measured modulation is dominated by instrumental systematics. Therefore, SPI observations of GRB 041219a do not significantly constrain GRB models. However, this measurement demonstrates the capability of SPI to measure polarization, and the techniques developed for this analysis

SEARCH FOR GRAVITATIONALLY REDSHIFTED 2.2 MEV LINE FROM 4U 1820-30

Get PDF
We have analyzed 1.7 Ms of the INTEGRAL data of the Low Mass X-Ray Binary (LMXB) 4U 1820-30 and searched for the redshifted 2.2 MeV neutron capture gamma-ray line. This source is unique in that it is thought to be accreting pure Helium and might be a powerful 2.2 MeV line source. If detected, this line would strongly constrain the neutron star equation of state, motivating this search. The line is expected to be redshifted to 1.30-1.72 MeV so we scanned the 1-2 MeV region. Although we failed to detect the redshifted 2.2 MeV line, mainly due to the intense background noise to which INTEGRAL is exposed, we placed upper limits on the source’s flux for different line widths. We plan to do analysis on the rest of the data (over 8 Ms) in the future
