Domain Analysis for the Construction of a Conceptual Structure: A Case Study

    No full text
This work describes the construction of a conceptual structure, as a result of the domain analysis of the current research on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), through different techniques based on the citations and semantic analysis. A sample which covers all published articles about the disease in mainstream journals was chosen. A total of 1,968 articles from 2000 through 2004 were retrieved from Science Citation Index. Author Co-citation Analysis (ACA) techniques and semantic analysis were used and the results were represented by different informatic programs. A macrostructure of the domain of the current research on BPH was identified through bibliometric techniques. The text mining techniques allowed validation of the identified macrostructure and the obtainment of the most frequent words in the text. The semantic analysis of the most cited reviews on BPH during the studied period allowed the definition of the categories to be used in the structure. Finally, a conceptual structure to be used as controlled (structured) language in the information retrieval, inside of a specialized information system on the approach of the disease is shown

The virtual orchestra: a systematic method of realising music composition through sample-based orchestral simulation

    No full text
This thesis investigates a method of orchestral simulation using sample-based synthesis, instrument modelling, and music performance rules. Music scores are produced using Sibelius notation software and performed by FATSO (Film and Television Studio Orchestra). FATSO is a virtual orchestra developed by the author using a combination of computer music software applications and expressive instrument modelling techniques capable of producing convincing simulated orchestral performances of music scores. Music performance rules are modelled on live human performance practice using both Analysis-by-Synthesis and Analysis-by-Measurement techniques. The collected data is analysed, and then implemented into a music score using the Sibelius live playback transformation feature. After a music score is processed with human performance data, the instrument sounds and playing techniques are realised by the Vienna Instruments sample playback engine and GigaPulse convolution reverberation plug-in. The processed performance data of the score is transmitted to Vienna Instruments via MIDI using sound-sets created with the Sibelius sound-set editor. Consequently, a music score created using Sibelius can be performed by FATSO with a high level of realism through detailed instrument modelling and expressive music performance rules. This thesis contains two parts. Part 1 discusses the background to sample-based orchestral simulation and the main components of realistic and expressive orchestral modelling. Part 2 discusses methods used by the author for performance data acquisition, and the resulting performance data implementation into the FATSO environment

    No full text
The presented bachelor's thesis deals with the portrayal of the millennial generation in contemporary literature and focuses on the novel Allegro Pastell (2020) by the German writer Leif Randt. The millennial generation, also called Generation Y, is dealt with in academic literature as well as in fiction and its depiction can be found in several contemporary novels. The novel Allegro Pastell, which describes a long-distance relationship between two millennial protagonists, received attention and several prestigious nominations concerning its portrayal of the aforementioned generation. This thesis examines whether and to what extent the protagonists of the novel reflect their generation and compares their representation in the novel with academic literature. Furthermore, the author Leif Randt and the millennial generation are presented in this work. An in-depth analysis of the novel represents the main part of the thesis. The paper can be used to become familiar with both the novel and the topic of the millennial generation in literature. KEYWORDS millennial generation, Generation Y, millennials, millennial literature, contemporary literature, Leif Randt, Allegro Pastell, novel analysi

Value proposition analysis for solid state lighting: A case study of Ahmedali Ahmed Electrical Contracting; Marketing the product in the Kingdom of Bahrain

    No full text
The proposition given to a product or service in terms of its worth given by a customer is researched and analysed to find the underlying factors contributing to the value. The study is undertaken to investigate the different factors that lays ground for increased ‘Customer value’ and ‘Product Value’. The research objective is to find the “Value Proposition Analysis for Solid State Lighting: a Case Study AhmedAli Ahmed Electrical Contracting; Marketing the product in the Kingdom of Bahrain” Most businesses generate profits, when the customers give a certain value(s) to the service/product provided by the business entity. This could involve many attributes to consider. The project overlooks in to this value significantly to understand the attributes that collectively contributes to ‘Valued Relation’ between the customer and the business. This is achieved by making effective use of literature suggested by various authors and by employing research strategies to validate the literature through the findings. The research also looks in to the case study organisation to fully understand the capabilities of the company to market the product. Thus, this analysis will be specifically looking in to the value proposition given to Solid State Lighting by the current UK customers and by clients of AhamedAli Ahmed Electrical Contracting, Kingdom of Bahrain. However, this analysis must viewed critically, as the product comes at a premium price and the study will be much centred in the Kingdom of Bahrain and cannot be generalised for the other GCC countries or the Middle East. This study is focused to generate strategies in marketing Solid State Lighting in Bahrain taking A.A.E as the Case Study Organisation understanding the Value Proposition for Solid State Lighting

Postromantische Liebe und Poetik der Vagheit. Zur Neucodierung von Emotionen in Leif Randts Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty und Planet Magnon

    No full text
Diverging from the pathos of strong feelings commonly embraced by literary tradition, contemporary author Leif Randt’s writing is concerned with balancing emotions. In his two novels Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty (2011) and Planet Magnon (2015), he develops a post-romantic discourse on love that counters the notion of passionate love (Niklas Luhmann) with the theory of PostPragmaticJoy. According to this theory, the failure of love is no longer a catastrophe, but an opportunity for something new. At the same time, Leif Randt’s literature is characterized by a poetics of vagueness, leaving many aspects within his novels unclear. The article explores the connection between the discourse of post-romanticism and the mode of vagueness and shows how Randt initiates a new coding of emotions while leaving their consequences in limbo

What causes them, and how do they transmit across borders? In essence the motivation for the dissertation can be summarized with two words, globalization and regionalism. The dissertation presents a series of four papers. Three common features are representative for these papers: They are all empirical investigations of, in general international and in particular domestic, business cycle fluctuations. The methodological framework used for inference utilizes large data sets, combining both the time and cross sectional dimension of the information set available. Lastly, all the papers build on the findings in the business cycle literature of a high degree of cross country synchronization, but extend this line of research by identifying common shocks. A prime candidate for a shock that is truly common across borders is unexpected disturbances to the price of oil. Two of the papers in the dissertation explicitly explore the linkages between the global oil market and the macro economy. Furthermore, just as individual countries are highly interconnected so are likely also the sectors of a given economy. Thus, to fully understand how international shocks like, e.g., unexpected innovations in the real price of oil, transmit to domestic economies, production networks, trade between sectors and potentially shared productivity dynamics between the different sectors in the economy might all be important. The last paper in this dissertation addresses this issue

Watson, director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, 1994 Photo by Leif Carlsson To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery at The Rockefeller University that genes are made of DNA - considered by many to be the single most important biological discovery of the twentieth century - the university has kicked off a year-long series of events that were running through May 1994. The celebration was formally inaugurated in November 1993 with a lecture by Nobel laureate James D. Watson, best known for discovering the double-helical structure of DNA.
