Foreign Presence Spillovers and Firms’ Export Response:Evidence from the Indonesian Manufacturing
This paper examines the existence of spillovers associated with the presence of multinational enterprises (MNEs) on a firm’s decision to export, and on export intensity. It utilizes data from Indonesian manufacturing for the census years 1996 and 2006. Channels through which MNEs can affect other firms’ export behavior are considered and tested. The econometric analysis suggests that the contribution of MNEs in improving technological knowledge raises the likelihood that domestic firms will enter the export market, and improves export performance. The analysis finds weak evidence to support the hypothesis that competition, created by the operation of MNEs, facilitates entry into export markets. Further analysis however shows that the impact of competition depends on the level of productivity of the domestic firms. In particular, the more productive firms are suggested to have been able to benefit more than the less productive ones. The overall analysis suggests that given the mixed evidence, policies to promote MNEs are still worth pursuing. The most obvious justification comes from the positive impact of the increased pool of technological knowledge. Other than this, strengthening trade facilitation seems to be a positive proposition, given the finding that many of the new domestic exporters seem to have been constrained in increasing their exports.
Firm Characteristic Determinants of SME Participation in Production Networks
This paper provides an empirical analysis of small and medium enterprise (SME) participation in production networks. It gauges firm characteristic determinants of SME participation in production networks. The empirical investigation utilizes results obtained from an ERIA Survey on SME Participation in Production Networks, conducted over a three month period at the end 2009 in most ASEAN countries (i.e., Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos PDR) and China. The results suggest that productivity, foreign ownership, financial characteristics, innovation efforts, and managerial/entrepreneurial attitudes are the important firm characteristics that determine SME participation in production networks. The paper extends the analysis to identify the determinants that allow SMEs to move from low to high quality or value adding participation in production networks. The results suggest that size, productivity, foreign ownership, and, to some extent, innovation efforts and managerial attitudes, are the important firm characteristics needed by SMEs to upgrade their positions in production networks. The finding suggests that SMEs really exploit competitiveness from economies of scale only when they are able to engage in production networks.
KRIMINALISASI TERHADAP PRAKTEK PROSTITUSI DI KABUPATEN SLEMAN
Criminalization is the determination of a behavior that was not previously
seen as a crime into an act that can be punished. In the case of prostitution as an
act that violates legal norms, it takes a science that can make an action a criminal
act. This is the background behind the author to write a law related to the
criminalization of the practice of prostitution in Sleman Regency. The research
method uses a normative research method in which the authors approach the
problem under study with the laws and regulations relating to the act of prostitution
and analyze the findings.
The author conducted data collection in OPD of the Sleman Regional
Government by conducting interviews with Kasat Reskrim Polres Sleman to find
out how to arrange an act of prostitution into a criminal act as well as efforts to
control criminal acts of prostitution in Sleman Regency. From this research, the
author conducts an analysis using laws and regulations relating to the crime of
prostitution such as the Criminal Code, Legislation, as well as various secondary
literature such as books and journals.
Based on the author's research, the handling of the crime of prostitution is
carried out based on the provisions of the laws and regulations governing the crime
of prostitution. Currently the existing law in Sleman Regency can only ensnare
pimps and embroidery house providers, but has not been able to ensnare users and
commercial sex workers. Efforts to control the practice of prostitution are
preventive, non-judicial, and repressive. The author concludes that a new criminal
law policy is urgently needed as an effort to combat prostitution in Sleman Regency
Location Choice of Multinational Enterprises in China: Comparison between Japan and Taiwan
This paper explores the location choice of MNEs in China, shedding special light on the role of agglomeration of same-nationality firms. In particular, we examine how its role differs according to investors’ productivity. Furthermore, we compare the location choice of Japanese and Taiwanese MNEs in China, because Taiwanese MNEs are expected to experience less uncertainty in investing in China than Japanese MNEs, due to Taiwan’s linguistic and cultural advantages in China. We find that, less productive Japanese firms prefer to locate close to larger same-nationality agglomerations, there are no differences in location according to firms’ productivity in the case of Taiwanese firms.

Monitoring Trade Costs in Southeast Asia
This paper develops an Index of Trade Costs for ASEAN Member Countries, 1990-2007 based on the gap between cif and fob values of ASEAN exports to Australia. The cif/fob gap is a commonly used aggregate measure of trade costs, and Australia is a useful benchmark for ASEAN countries because it is a large trading partner whose major ports of entry are roughly equidistant from the ASEAN countries. The case for using this Index as a measure of trade costs is set out in the first section. The second section examines the raw data for the ASEAN countries. The third section reports econometric analysis of the cif/fob measure to better understand why trade costs vary across countries and to compare the ASEAN members' record to the global average during the period 1990-2007. The final section presents the two versions of the Index, discusses some reservations to using the cif/fob measure of trade costs, and suggests how the Index could be upgraded, maintained and extended.Trade costs; ASEAN.
Harmonizing Biodiesel Fuel Standards in East Asia: Current Status, Challenges and Way Forward
Abstract: This paper discusses the development of and policy towards biodiesel fuel (BDF) in the East Asia Summit (EAS) Region (hereafter East Asia), with a focus on activities related to harmonizing BDF standards. It finds that the EAS countries have actively promoted the development of BDF for a variety of reasons. To minimize problems with engines arising from the use of BDF, most EAS countries have established their national BDF standards. However, these diverse standards cause barriers for BDF trade and act against the regional interest in maximizing benefits from BDF production and utilization. Therefore, the EAS policy makers decided to harmonize BDF standards, and a regional benchmark standard has been published. Through a comparative review of existing national standards against the benchmark, it finds that the harmonization is beneficial economically and environmentally, and is technically feasible but practically stalled due to the lack of political determination. Therefore, among a few policy implications, the key message to deliver is a call for political determination to implement the harmonization in the EAS region. Since harmonization of BDF standards has been tried in other regions, the findings of this paper may supplement the literature, enhance understanding of the EAS case, and provide lessons and implications that may be helpful in advancing similar harmonization elsewhere.
Special Economic Zones and Economic Corridors
Various reports show that special economic zones (SEZ) have become a prime catalyst for regional development in developing countries such as China and the ASEAN countries. The SEZ can be defined as a specific geographical region with economic laws that are more liberal than a country's typical economic laws. Many SEZs have characteristics of bonded zones, export processing zone (EPZ) or free trade zones and provide special incentives, including tax exemption or reduction to investors. The purpose of the paper is to enumerate the candidates for SEZ in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam (CLMV countries) according to four types: "metropolitan areas," "ports and harbors," "border areas" and "junctions or intersections." The first two types are based on the experience of forerunning ASEAN countries and the latter two are based on the economic corridors of the Greater Mekong Sub region Economic Cooperation Program. The paper concludes by identifying locations for the questionnaire and flowchart approach-based surveys, and presenting country-specific strategies.ASEAN, SEZ, Port, Harbor, Junction, Economic Corridor, CLMV, GMS.
Pengaruh Terpaan Iklan Dan Brand Loyalty Terhadap Minat Beli Produk Samsung Galaxy
The purpose of this research is to find out whether exposure to advertising and brand loyalty influences buying interest of Samsung Galaxy products. The theory used in this study is the AIDA model (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action), and the Advertising Exposure Process proposed by David. A Aaker. The research method used by the authors in this study is a quantitative method approach. The objects in this study are those who want to make purchases of Samsung Galaxy products, as well as those who have already used Samsung Galaxy products, which are determined by 85 respondents of the study sample. This research is quantitative descriptive, where the primary data collected through questionnaires are processed statistically, so that the measurement scale. The results of this study indicate that the variable exposure to advertising has an influence on buying interest of Samsung Galaxy by 46.6 percent. Also, the brand variable variable has an influence on buying interest of Samsung Galaxy products by 48.4 percent. Also, the variable exposure to advertising and brand loyalty has an influence on buying interest of Samsung Galaxy products by 61.8 percent together. Meanwhile, the rest is influenced by other variables not examined in this study. The conclusion of this study shows that there is an influence between exposure to advertising and brand loyalty on the purchase interest of Samsung Galaxy products, both partially and simultaneously. Suggestions from this study that the author can provide include further research of a similar nature in order to use other variables not contained in this study. Also, it is hoped that this research can be used as a reference, both for producers and those who should be consumers
¿Una crítica de Apolonio Díscolo a la Téchne grammatiké? Enfoques en torno de la noción de diáthesis en la gramática griega antigua
The question of the authenticity of the Téchne grammatiké, attributed by the tradition to Dionisius Thrax, is a persistent problem for the history of linguistic ideas. Their relevance goes beyond the identity of the author. Indeed, it is related to the plausibility that the theoretical positions adopted in the TG were sustained in an early date. Based on the study of diáthesis in the TG and in Apolonius Dyscolus’ Syntax, we will sustain that the critic involved in this last treatment supposes that one attributed to Dionisius.
