The Healthy Body Image intervention: A school-based, cluster-randomized controlled trial in high school students

Avhandling (doktorgrad) - Norges idrettshøgskole, 2020Background: Researchers have been encouraged to design and evaluate health promotive interventions specifically tailored to promote positive embodiment in adolescents because it is associated with important mental and physical health outcomes. Furthermore, because positive embodiment and healthy lifestyle habits are related phenomena, stimulating positive embodiment should also promote healthy lifestyle habits. It has been indicated that school-based, interactive, multicomponent interventions could be effective. However, few studies have implemented all the necessary criteria for a sound methodology: a study with a clustered-randomization, a controlled design; a large sample size, including both genders; a long-term follow-up; and a measurement of the promotion of positive embodiment, not only the lack of dissatisfaction or symptoms of eating disorder pathology. Additionally, more studies that investigate which constructs that need to be influenced in order to improve positive embodiment are needed, to further tailor content for the best possible intervention effect on boys and girls. The Healthy Body Image (HBI) intervention was a response to the lack of evidence in this field and to the reported gaps related to methodological quality. Objectives: The primary objective of the thesis is to evaluate the effects of the HBI intervention on high school boys and girls. The first paper outlines the rationale and the specific study protocol for the intervention. The second paper examines both the short- and long-term effects of the intervention on positive embodiment and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), as well as the moderating effect of workshop attendance on intervention effects in boys and girls. The third paper evaluates whether the intervention has an additional effect on lifestyle habits, such as physical activity, eating, and sleep, in the same sample. The fourth paper examines whether the intervention affected positive embodiment through specific constructs such as, internalization, social media usage, self-compassion, self-esteem, and body image flexibility that the intervention aimed to target.Paper I: Sundgot-Borgen, C., Bratland-Sanda, S., Engen, K. Sexual harassment and eating disorders in female elite athletes - A controlled study

    No full text
The aims were to examine the percentage of female elite athletes and controls reporting sexual harassment and abuse (SHAB), and whether a higher percentage of female athletes with eating disorders (ED) had experienced SHAB. A questionnaire was administered to the total population of female elite athletes (n=660) and controls (n=780) aged 15-39 years. SHAB were measured through 11 questions, ranging from light to severe SHAB. In addition, questions about dietary-, menstrual- and training history and the Eating Disorder Inventory were included. The response rate was 88% for athletes and 71% for controls. Athletes (n=121) and controls (n=81) classified as “at risk” for ED and non-ED controls participated in a clinical interview. A higher percentage of controls, compared with athletes reported experiences of SHAB in general (59% vs. 51%, p<0.001). A lower percentage of athletes had experienced SHAB in sports than outside sport (28% vs.39%, p<0.001). A higher percentage of ED athletes than non-ED athletes had experienced SHAB (66% vs.48%) (p<0.01), both inside sport and outside sport. In spite of the fact that a higher percentage of controls compared with athletes had experienced SHAB, it is necessary to formulate clear guidelines, set up educational workshops and implement intervention programs for both ED and SHAB in sport

Competing conventions: The Big Branders’ struggle to incorporate new quality conceptions in the Norwegian food market

    No full text
The paper addresses recent changes in the Norwegian agrifood industry from the analytical perspective of quality conventions. Storper and Salais’ “worlds of production” plus Boltanski and Thévenots’ “orders of worth” are used as a basis for the empirical study. First, the paper discusses how the largest Norwegian branders try to strategically adapt to “novel” quality attributes like health-enhancing food, origin/terroir, environmental sustainability and ethics. Second, the paper investigates the companies’ quality signalling strategy: How are these “novel” qualities communicated to consumers? Multiple options are available: Do they attempt to systematically incorporate “novel qualities” into their private brand equity (“conventionalizing qualities”)? Do they prefer a co-labelling scheme with a third party control, or do they use any other measures for quality signalling? The paper thereby discusses how the largest Norwegian branders in the food sector cope with conflicting and competing quality conventions.Food quality, economics of convention., Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
