    Harnessing Generative AI for Inclusive Education: Opportunities and Challenges

    The 21st century is the era where most technologies for education are being created; emerging technologies have been promising teaching and learning innovations for decades. At the same time, inclusive education aims to create equal opportunities for everyone, which can sometimes become counterintuitive for individual learning needs and experiences, especially when it comes to learners with specific needs. While assistive technologies have been extremely helpful for specific types of disabilities in the context of special education, this is not always the case in terms of educational technologies (tools and conceptual frameworks), which are at times too generic and not easily applicable to specific contexts. On the other hand, current technological developments such as generative artificial intelligence, while potentially bringing new opportunities and avenues for research and development, if left underproblematized and undertheorized, might even increase existing divides and favor different types of exclusion. The most widely used models and frameworks for inclusive education generally provide a descriptive frame of reference for an aspirational view (i.e., Universal Design for Learning). However, actionable, innovative pedagogical strategies and methodologies that go hand in hand with emerging technologies are not easily available. This is true also in terms of creating individual learning experiences fitted for specific needs in terms of planning, implementing, and assessing learning outcomes. Furthermore, aligning inclusive learning principles with those of individual needs and plans of different learners requires careful reconsideration in line with different tools, modalities, spaces, and pedagogies. Moreover, with new, emerging technologies, inclusion issues and problems might even increase if we do not carefully consider related risks and challenges: for instance, we can already witness an emergence of an exponentially increasing gap between genAI-supported and unsupported languages. With emerging technologies such as generative AI, we should be able to create theoretical, conceptual, and technological artifacts that can tackle these gaps and provide strategies and tools ranging from policy to practice, focusing on educators and learners – especially in special and inclusive education. This Research Topic aims to explore how emerging technologies, particularly generative AI, can be harnessed to foster inclusive education while addressing the potential risks and challenges that may arise. The main objectives include investigating how generative AI can be integrated into inclusive education frameworks, identifying the ethical considerations and policy implications, and developing innovative pedagogical strategies that cater to individual learning needs. Specific questions to be answered include: How can generative AI be used to support inclusive education? What are the ethical and policy challenges associated with its use? How can we ensure that emerging technologies do not exacerbate existing educational divides? To gather further insights into the intersection of inclusive education and generative AI, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: - Generative AI and inclusive education: theory, practice, and policy - Emerging technologies and special education: prospects for teacher professional development - Ethics and policies for the use of Generative AI in special and inclusive education - Reconceptualizing innovative education in the context of emerging technologies - Challenges, risks, and visions for the educational future in the context of inclusive educatio

    Chinese Vaccine Diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean: Continuities and Rupture in Beijing’s Soft Power Prospects

    © The Author(s) 2023.This article examines China’s vaccine drive in Eastern Mediterranean countries of Türkiye, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories during 2020–2021 from a soft power angle. 1 Although Chinese COVID-19 era health diplomacy is presented as a major breakthrough in the West, this study argues that continuities are more visible in the Eastern Mediterranean context with regard to China’s discourse and diplomatic practices. Beijing invested in the existing notions of propaganda, such as solidarity with developing countries, anti-Americanism, and economic partnership. In assessing the impact of Chinese vaccine diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, the study investigates major diplomatic events and concludes that China could not improve its image in Türkiye in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic

    The Psychology of Morality

    Five questions regarding the nature of the moral sense, the origin of conscience, the development of morality, variability in the moral sense, and the relation of morality to behavior are examined from the point of view of four theoretical approaches (psychoanalytic theory, social learning theory, cognitive-developmental theory, and evolutionary psychology). In addition, some concepts and findings from outside the four approaches are also touched upon. The moral sense is shown to be complex, comprising cognitions, feelings, and behaviors. The theoretical approaches disagree regarding the issues of whether conscience directly reflects social teaching, or is constructed by the developing individual. They also disagree on whether moral development is incremental or stagewise. Explanations of individual, gender, and cultural differences in morality differ across the four approaches. None of the approaches explains the relation of behavior to morality; rather, application of social psychological theories is suggested. More recent developments are briefly reviewed, supporting the view that the evolutionary approach and its extensions have become dominant in the field in recent years. Focus on social relations rather than individuals, emphasis on emotions rather than reason or action, pluralist views of the bases of morality, and functions of morality in group competition are highlighted as aspects of the newer approaches

    Sunar Farm is a startup that provides tools for trapping pests and rat repellents on rice plants, which is currently under the guidance of the STMIK Primakara business incubator. Startup Sunar Farm is experiencing problems in sales, there is still no interest from farmers in buying Sunar Farm equipment. The solution that is trying to be applied to these problems is by developing and mapping the business model of the Sunar Farm startup using the Design Sprint method. The Design Sprint method is used to find solutions, validate the problems of Startup Sunar Farm, and use BMC to map changes in the business model of the solutions obtained. The Design Sprint method has 5 stages consisting of understanding to understand the user's problems, the divergence stage to make solutions to existing problems, the decide voting stage for the solution, the prototype stage, namely making the physical form of the selected solution, and the validate stage validating the prototype made. The results of this study using the Design Sprint method obtained several additions to the BMC, namely additions to the customer segment, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, and key partnerships

    A Research on the Effect of Retrogression and Re-Aging Heat Treatment on Hot Tensile Properties of AA7075 Aluminum Alloys

    Aluminum alloys are preferred in most industries due to the functional properties they provide. It is known that alloys that can be processed with heat treatments show better mechanical properties. 7xxx series alloys can be processed via heat treatments and are often used in environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures and corrosive environments. Corrosive sensitivities such as stress corrosion cracking can be observed with the effect of working conditions. It is known that retrogression and re-aging heat treatment provide corrosion resistance and decrease the stress corrosion cracking velocity. The purpose of this study is to examine the tensile behavior of annealed and retrogression-re-aging heat-treated AA7075 alloys at elevated temperatures. The mechanical properties of the alloys were investigated by conducting tensile tests at room temperature, 100, 200, and 300 °C. Hardness tests were performed at room temperature on the samples that were taken from tensile test specimens after tensile tests. The potential effects of test temperature on mechanical and microstructural properties were examined. The annealed and RRA heat-treated alloys were characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis. As a result, an increase in strength and hardness of the retrogression-re-aging treated AA7075 alloys was observed. The ductility of the retrogression-re-aging treated alloy was lower compared to the annealed AA7075 alloy. Fracture surface examinations showed that there was a semi-ductile fracture below 200 °C and ductile fracture at temperatures of 200 and 300 °C. Ductility was observed to increase with increasing temperature

    Effect of Al2O3Nanoparticles as Reinforcement on the Wear Properties of A356/Al2O3Nanocomposites Produced by Powder Metallurgy

    In this study, microstructure and wear properties of A356 aluminum matrix nanocomposites reinforced with nano-Al2O3 particles were investigated. The powder metallurgy method was used for the production of 1 wt% and 2 wt% nano-Al2O3 particle reinforced nanocomposites. After 1 h of mechanical milling of A356 and nano-Al2O3 powders, green compacts were obtained by cold pressing. Green compacts were sintered at 550 °C in a vacuum environment (10-6 mbar) for 1 h. Samples were characterized by density, hardness measurements, scanning electron microscopy investigations, and wear tests. As the reinforcement ratio increased, there was a decrease in the densities of the nanocomposites, as well as an increase in the porosity. The highest hardness and the lowest weight loss values were obtained in 1 wt% Al2O3 reinforced nanocomposites. A decrease in hardness was measured at 2 wt% Al2O3 reinforced nanocomposites

    Manufacturing of B4C particle reinforced A360 aluminium cellular composite materials by the integration of stir casting and space holder methods

    Stir casting method has become prominent for fabrication of metal matrix composites in recent years. This method can be adjusted for casting around space holding particles to obtain cellular composite materials. In this study, a specific method which is a combination of stir casting and space holder techniques were used to produce open-celled A360 aluminium-B4C composite foams with regular sized and distributed pores. Weight ratios of reinforcement particles determined as 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2%. The influences of particle reinforcement on the microstructure and the mechanical behaviour of composite foams were investigated. Microstructures were analysed with optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM). Compression and hardness tests were carried out to observe the effects of reinforcement on mechanical properties. Compression strength properties and hardness of composites increased with the ceramic reinforcement, however the plastic strength of the composite foams showed worsening trend after a certain reinforcement ratio (0.5 wt.%). Energy absorption properties of the composite foams showed parallel trends with compressive strength properties

    Suman Gautam was born in Nepal in 1983. He earned his bachelor’s and master's degree in geology in Nepal, and then came to the US to obtain his master’s degree in Geology/ Geophysics. He worked in Schlumberger in Houston as a Senior Geophysicist, where he applied data science skills in the study of geophysics. Besides his profession, Suman is also a musician who experiments with multiple genres. He picked up a guitar when he was a kid, started composition during undergraduate, and is now playing in Forest Anthem, a Nepalese rock/ metal band with folk influences. His other interests include hiking, photography, and exploring new food
