Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textOn the road towards sustainability, the merits of electric vehicles to mitigate greenhouse gas emission and roadside air pollution had propelled worldwide application of the technology. Despite commitments from progressive governments to phase out conventional internal-combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicle adoption lingered in few leading countries such as Norway and the Netherlands. Thus far, electric vehicle shares in most automobile-using countries remained insignificant; only 2.6% of the global vehicle sales were contributed by EVs in 2019.The electric vehicle promotion approaches, though may share similarities across geographies, shall not be identical regarding the preestablished disparities in development settings and the resultant vehicle usage patterns. To effectively accommodate the localised e-mobility acceptance problem, it is thus imperative to examine the roles and interactions of adoption conditions on a contextual basis, especially over the under-researched high-density Asian cases.This thesis consists of two essays, both of which established Hong Kong as a case study for investigating electric vehicle adoption given its contrasting urban form with most studied geographies. The first essay examined the explanatory power of psychological antecedents and beliefs variables on the electric vehicle buying intention of the Hong Kong licensed drivers based on a survey conducted in 2019. A structural equation model was implemented to estimate the interactions between the dependent variable and the adoption factors. It was uncovered that the adoption preference of Hong Kong customers, especially those without an EV at the time, was highly value-driven and conformed to the perceived social expectation on owning an alternative fuel vehicle. The experiential aspects of electric vehicle driving positively influenced customers’ purchase decision through multiple psychological antecedents. Subjected to the high-density development context, deficiency in public charging facilities deterred certainty about the electric vehicle technology, and the possibility to conduct home charging mitigated the perceived usage difficulty. These findings recognised key electric vehicle adoption catalysts and rendered contextualised promotional strategies in densely populated and compactly developed cities.In view of the commanding role of public charging provision to electric vehicle uptake in high-density cities, the second essay was dedicated to the context-sensitive charging infrastructure deployment problem. A facility optimisation model was proposed on the Hong Kong case study, incorporating constraints to localise public charging supply and demand. Customers’ electric vehicle purchase intention in the aforementioned survey was extracted to estimate future demand through an ordered probit model, and was then jointed with the supply-side constraints into a location-allocation model minimising charging demand shortfalls and travel time to reach the facilities. Results suggested that existing public charging network needed to be expanded substantially, particularly in suburban new towns. Benefiting from the high development density in the study context, expansion of existing charging stations was preferred to establishing new locations as a means to save fixed costs of foundational infrastructure. This essay could serve as a reference for the spatial planning and deployment strategies of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure in high-density cities.為達致可持續發展，地界各地相繼引入電動車以控制溫室氣體的排放及改善路邊空氣污染。然而，縱使部分國家銳意淘汰傳統內燃引擎車輛，電動車的應用目前仍只集中於個別發達國家，如挪威、荷蘭等。在二零一九年，電動車只佔全球汽車銷售的百分之二點六，反映電動車尚未在主流汽車使用國家普及。為了促進電動車的應用，相關推動措施必需因地制宜，以配合各地不同的發展背景及受其影響的汽車使用習慣。因此，在制定政策前應先了解在不同處境下，電動車使用之先決條件的影響及其之間的關係；而較少被視作研究對象的高密度亞洲城市尤其值得關注。有鑑香港的城市發展與現有文獻中的研究案例具明顯差異，本論文中的兩篇文章皆以香港作為案例分析：首篇文章探討心理因素與個人看法如何影響香港駕駛執照持有人購買電動車的意向，取用二零一九年進行的一項問卷調查結果，以結構方程模型估算各因素與電動車購買意欲的關聯。研究結果顯示，香港顧客的購買意願很大程度上取決於個人價值觀，該決定亦受從眾心理所影響，此特徵於非電動車主群體中尤為顯著。通過影響多項心理因素，駕駛電動車時的經驗感受有助提升受訪者的電動車購買意欲。考慮到香港的高密度發展背景，公共充電設施不足削弱潛在用家購買電動車的意欲。藉着分析高密度都市居民的電動車購買心理，研究結果點出緊湊都市為有效推動電動車應用所需要的獨特政策措施。承接首篇文章，第二篇文章更具體地探討電動車充電設施的選址與城市發展背景間的關聯。文章續以香港為研究案例，建構一個揉合本地充電供求的設施優化模型。在需求方面，本文應用序列機率模型，以上文提及的電動車購買意欲調查結果估算未來的電動車充電需求；在供應方面，則考慮一系列限制條件及潛在充電設施選址。基於所定義的供求條件，本文設置一個位置分配模型，以尋找最能滿足充電需求及最可達的設施選址配置。分析結果指出，現有的公共充電網絡亟需拓展，而在近郊的新市鎮區域的需求則最為殷切。受惠於研究案例的高密度發展，擴充現有的充電站比建設新的充電站點能減省安裝充電基礎設施的固定成本，可更有效地配置充電設施。高密度城市在規劃電動車公共充電設施的選址策略時可以本研究結果作參考。Sun, Ka Kit.M.Phil. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
