Promoting Sustainable Development Goal 5 Through Ubuntu-Based South African Basic Education Curriculum
Get PDFGender inequality is a pervasive problem worldwide and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) of gender equality is crucial for social progress. In South Africa, gender disparities persist in primary and secondary education, hindering girls' access to quality education and opportunities. This study explores the application of the Ubuntu socio-cultural principle in addressing SDG 5 in South Africa. Ubuntu, an African philosophy emphasizing interconnectedness and humaneness, offers insights into fostering social justice and equality. By integrating Ubuntu principles into education, South African secondary schools can promote inclusive classrooms, gender sensitization programs, peer support, and mentorship. Inclusive education ensures equal participation and opportunities for all students, fostering respect for diversity. Gender sensitization programs raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and promote empathy and understanding. Peer support and mentorship programs create a supportive network, breaking gender barriers and fostering positive role modelling. Applying Ubuntu principles in South African secondary schools can contribute to achieving SDG 5 by creating an inclusive and respectful educational environment that values and respects all students, regardless of gender. By promoting empathy, understanding, and collective responsibility, Ubuntu can help challenge harmful gender norms and foster dialogue, collaboration, and transformative change towards gender equality
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Is virtual learning still virtually satisfactory in the post-COVID-19 era for pre-service teachers?
Get PDFThe planned global migration to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the unplanned incidence of the COVID-19 pandemic have necessitated the indispensability of virtual learning adoption in tertiary institutions. The success of virtual learning is premised on many factors, including the quality of virtual learning platforms (VLPs) and users' satisfaction. This study, therefore, examined the association between VLPs and pre-service teachers (PST) satisfaction in the post-COVID-19 era. The study adopted a quantitative design using multi-stage sampling to select 200 final-year students in education faculty. The analytical methods used were Pearson product-moment correlation and independent t-test using SPSS version 29 statistical software. The findings indicated a moderately positive link between the quality of virtual learning platforms and pre-service teachers’ satisfaction. However, satisfaction levels differed based on the gender of the participants. This study recommends a regular collection of feedback from the students to identify where there are hitches; higher institutions should consider creating a quality assurance department for monitoring and evaluation of the institutions' virtual learning; and training and retraining of students and instructors are essential for the update of knowledge as the new technologies continue to emerge. The uniqueness of this study is in the appraisal of pre-service teachers’ knowledge and satisfaction after the COVID-19 experience. There is no iota of doubt that pre-service teachers who are preparing to be engaged in different schools need to imbibe the culture of virtual learning. Therefore, further studies must be conducted on the best way to make virtual learning attractive

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
