    Outer/inner morphology: The dichotomy of Japanese renyoo verbs and nouns

    This paper investigates the morpho-phonological differences between the nominal and verbal conjugational forms of renyoo (a preverbal form) in terms of (i) idiosyncrasy, (ii) productivity, and (iii) accent shift. All of these properties indicate that the two renyoo morphemes appear in different syntactic positions: with renyoo-verbs, the root first merges with the categorizer v and then with the REN(yoo) head, whereas with renyoo-nouns, the root directly merges with the categorizer n, which is phonologically realized as the renyoo morpheme. Our analysis consequently supports Marantz/s (2007) inner/outer morphology division within a word, and also provides implications for Chomsky\u27s (2013) {H, H} Labeling Algorithm (Sugimura & Obata 2014)

    Role of the H+2 channel in the primordial star formation under strong radiation field and the critical intensity for the supermassive star formation

    We investigate the role of the H+2 channel on H2 molecule formation during the collapse of primordial gas clouds immersed in strong radiation fields which are assumed to have the shape of a diluted blackbody spectra with temperature Trad. Since the photodissociation rate of H+2 depends on its level population, we take full account of the vibrationally resolved H+2 kinetics.We find that in clouds under soft but intense radiation fields with spectral temperature Trad ≲ 7000 K, the H+2 channel is the dominant H2 formation process. On the other hand, for harder spectra with Trad ≳ 7000 K, the H- channel takes over H+2 in the production of molecular hydrogen.We calculate the critical radiation intensity needed for supermassive star formation by direct collapse and examine its dependence on the H+2 level population. Under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) level population, the critical intensity is underestimated by a factor of a few for soft spectra with Trad ≲ 7000 K. For harder spectra, the value of the critical intensity is not affected by the level population of H+2 . This result justifies previous estimates of the critical intensity assuming LTE populations since radiation sources like young and/or metal-poor galaxies are predicted to have rather hard spectra

    Diverse-and-Dynamic Pathways in Educational and Interpersonal Identity Formation during Adolescence: Longitudinal Links With Psychosocial Functioning

    This study aimed to examine the relations between educational and interpersonal identity trajectories and psychosocial functioning based on a three-factor identity process model. A total of 968 Japanese adolescents including 13- and 16-years-olds (49.7% female) participated in a four-wave longitudinal study. Latent class growth analysis extracted five identity trajectories in each educational and interpersonal identity domain and revealed (a) high prevalence of low commitment identity trajectories, (b) absence of the closure trajectory, and (c) changeable identity trajectories that have not been identified in Western context (i.e., the Netherlands). Furthermore, a latent change model revealed dynamic relations between identity trajectories and psychosocial functioning. These findings provide critical insights into the diverse and dynamic pathways of identity formation during adolescence in Japan

    Search for 6(Lambda)H hypernucleus by the 6Li(pi(-), K+) reaction at p pi=1.2 GeV/c

    We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, by the 6(Lambda)H by the 6Li(pi(-), K+) reaction at p(pi)- = 1.2 GeV/c. The obtained missing-mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the 6(Lambda)H hypernucleus neither below nor above the 4(Lambda)H+2n particle decay threshold. An upper limit of th production cross section for the bound 6(Lambda)H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level. (c) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Electric-field driven director oscillations in a nematic liquid crystal: a NMR investigation

    We have investigated the oscillatory behavior of the nematic director for 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) when it is subjected to a static magnetic field and a sinusoidal electric field. In these experiments the two fields were inclined at about 50degrees and the frequency of the electric field was varied from several hertz to approximate to1000 Hz. The director orientation was measured using time-resolved deuterium NMR spectroscopy since this has the advantage of being able to determine the state of director alignment in the sample. In fact, for all of the frequencies studied the director is found to remain uniformly aligned. Since the diamagnetic and dielectric anisotropies are both positive the director oscillates in the plane formed by the two fields. These oscillations were observed to continue for many cycles, indicating that the coherence in the director orientation was not lost during this motion. The maximum and minimum angles made by the director with the magnetic field were determined, as a function of frequency, from the NMR spectrum averaged over many thousand cycles of the oscillations. At low frequencies (several hertz) these limiting angles are essentially independent of frequency but as the frequency increases the two angles approach each other and become equal at high frequencies, typically 1000 Hz. Our results are well explained by a hydrodynamic theory in which the sinusoidal time dependence of the electric field is included in the torque-balance equation. This analysis also shows that, for a range of frequencies between the high and low limits, these NMR experiments can give dynamic as well as static information concerning the nematic phase

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

    This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author
