"His Bloody Project" (2015) de Graeme Macrae Burnet : l’instabilité du roman néo-historique

    No full text
International audienceGraeme Macrae Burnet’s His Bloody Project is deliberately baffling for the first-time reader, playfully blending as it does reality and fiction. Subtitled ‘Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae’, a seventeen-year-old Highlands crofter who, in 1869, murdered three people, it plays on the similarity of the family name (Macrae) of the real author and of the (fictional) main character. It is also characterised as a novel edited and introduced by Graeme Macrae Burnet, who is thus not credited as having authored the text but only as having collected the various documents. The preface and the contents of this fragmented text continue with the literary jeux d’esprit and make His Bloody Project resolutely postmodern in its presentation. However, the use of scrupulous verisimilitude, a technique of the traditional historical novel, in terms of setting, language, description of the feudal conditions in the 19th-century Highlands of Scotland etc., also sets it apart from postmodern literary works. It can thus be considered a neo-historical novel, a new subgenre of contemporary historical fiction. I shall first examine in detail the claims made by the supposed editor of the novel and the way in which this collection of allegedly found documents plays with a long literary tradition as well as a more recent neo-Victorian literary trend; then how, without any hint of nostalgia, it engages in a quasi-sociological approach inspired by the French philosopher Michel Foucault with the Scottish mid-Victorian past it depicts for 21st-century readers and leaves them wondering about the unattainability of truth.Mêlant de manière ludique réalité et fiction, His Bloody Project de Graeme Macrae Burnet est délibérément déroutant à la première lecture.

Petrology and Geochemistry of Ultramafic-Gabbroic Intrusions in the Abitibi Area, Ontario

Title: Petrology and Geochemistry of Ultramafic-Gabbroic Intrusions in the Abitibi Area, Ontario, Author: Neil D. MacRae, Location: ThodeA brief review of the general geology of the peridotite belt south of Lake Abitibi is presented. The petrography and geochemistry of each major intrusion is discussed in detail and mineral and element variation diagrams are drawn for a number of cross sections. The degree of differentiation of the initial magmas is discussed and illustrated by comparison with a hypothetical model. On the assumption that all ultramafic-gabbroic intrusions in the area are related, a model for the physical evolution of the assemblage is suggested. The criteria of classification of ultramafic rocks are examined with particular reference to the analysed rocks. In this relationship, a brief statement of the origin of basaltic magmas is presented.ThesisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD

The Potential for Using Fire Roads as Bicycle Trails in Kootenay National Park

    No full text
Wildland RecreationA representative 100 cyclists were interviewed in Kootenay National Park, to determine whether or not there is a need for bicycle trails within the Park. The data from the 100 questionnaires obtained was analyzed, and yielded enlightening results. Approximately half of the cyclist-visitors originate from the nearby metropolis, Calgary. Three-quarters of the people interviewed stated that they would cycle on a trail in the Park, if they were aware of the possibility. Bicycle paths should be developed using existing fire access roads, and the public informed of these cycle routes. These paths should be developed within visitor service guidelines and objectives, and should also take into consideration environmental constraints

    Technical Report: A Limnology Study

Wildland RecreationThe purpose of this report is to present the findings of a limnological study done at the confluence of the Salmo and Pend d'Oreille Rivers, which now make up part of the Seven Mile Dam Reservoir. A previous study was completed in the summer of 1974 in order to determine whether a game fishery existed, and, if it did, whether it would be harmed by the construction of the Seven Mile Dam. Conditions in the Seven Mile Dam Reservoir, on the Pend d'Oreille River, are much the same now as they were prior to the construction of the Seven Mile Dam. Although access to the Salmo River spawning grounds has been made easier, oligotrophic conditions prevail and there is a lack of plankton, benthic organisms, and rooted aquatic vegetation. These are significant factors when considering the survival of any game fish, including rainbow trout, which are already present in the Salmo River, and have the potential for moving into the reservoir. Another study or series of studies should be conducted during various other times of the year to determine whether the lake will retain its oligotrophic nature, or whether it will slowly improve
