    Improving weak links in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis

    Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the oldest and deadliest infectious diseases in the world. We evaluated the current diagnostic TB service in Yogyakarta using sputum culture and intensified follow-up as additional tools and realized that the current work-up primarily based on clinical evaluation, sputum microscopy and chest X-ray is generally accurate, but slow, and not point-of-care based. We studied a hand-held breath test system (electronic nose or enose) that uses a neuronal network recognising patterns of volatile molecules. This technology (using machine learning, or artificial intelligence) has potential as a point of care test; the diagnostic precision in this study was moderate and needs to be further improved. A systematic review of enose systems showed the great potential of such devices. We evaluated first-line TB drug exposure over time in newly diagnosed patients with pulmonary TB, comparing exposure during fasting and fed condition; we modelled the findings to compute smart time points to reduce the burden of blood draws and measurements for patients and the health system. These studies help to tailor treatment for individual patients as well as to improve drug exposure in general informing future guidelines, and thereby improving outcome for patients. Administering TB drugs through the inhalation route instead of injections may help to improve safety and convenience of patients with drug-resistant TB; we explored the possibility to perform studies for this purpose in the setting of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

    Pelatihan untuk Penerapan Teknologi Pengolahan Minuman Gel Lidah Buaya di Ghra Sambiroto, Nanggulan, Kulon Progo, DIY

    Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds found in aloe vera. Aloe vera gel drink processing has been carried out by Aloe Ku or the aloe vera farmer association in Ghra Sambiroto, Nanggulan, Kulon Progo, DIY. The product is processed through cutting and heating stages so that the gel's antioxidant properties are reduced. The observation results showed that the aloe vera gel drink in Ghra Sambiroto had less than optimal antioxidant activity. This activity aims to improve the processing of aloe vera gel drinks so that their antioxidant activity is high. Training was carried out through counseling, practice, mentoring, and evaluation of knowledge and abilities. The results showed increased skills in processing aloe vera gel drinks based on the Pearson correlation between 0.7302–0.9467. Aloe vera gel drinks have the characteristics of total sugar of 13.35%, gel hardness with a force that can be held at 96.25 g/cm2 and deformation of 2.81 mm, and the ability to capture free radicals (Radical Scavenging Activity, RSA) 6.72%.Flavonoid merupakan senyawa antioksidan yang terdapat dalam gel lidah buaya yang bermanfaat bagi kesehatan, karena bersifat hipoglikemik maupun hipolipidemik.  Namun konsumsi gel dalam bentuk segar kurang praktis dan tidak disukai, sehingga harus diolah menjadi makanan. Pengolahan minuman gel lidah buaya telah dilakukan oleh Aloe Ku atau asosiasi petani lidah buaya di Ghra Sambiroto, Nanggulan, Kulon Progo, DIY. Produk tersebut diolah melalui tahap pemotongan dan pemanasan, sehingga sifat antioksidatif gel berkurang.  Hasil observasi menunjukkan bahwa minuman gel lidah buaya di Ghra Sambiroto aktivitas antioksidannya belum optimal. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah menerapkan perbaikan pengolahan minuman gel lidah buaya agar aktivitas antioksidatifnya tinggi. Pelatihan dilakukan dengan penyuluhan, praktek, pendampingan, dan evaluasi pengetahuan dan kemampuan. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan ketrampilan mengolah minuman gel lidah buaya berdasarkan korelasi Pearson antara 0,7302–0,9467. Minuman gel lidah buaya memiliki karakteristik gula total 13,35%; kekerasan gel dengan gaya yang dapat ditahan 96,25 g/cm2 dan deformasi 2,81 mm serta kemampuan menangkap radikal bebas (Radical Scavenging Activity), RSA) 6,72%

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Aloe vera memiliki sifat fungsional sebagai antioksidan, karena mengandung senyawa flavonoid. Saat ini budidaya tanaman aloe vera ditujukan untuk kosmetik maupun makanan. AloeKu adalah asosiasi  petani aloe vera di Grha Sambiroto, Kulon Progo, yang telah mengolah gel aloe vera menjadi minuman gel aloe vera dan es krim, namun penyimpanan produk harus dalam refrigerator. Padahal terdapat produk yang lebih awet seperti permen lunak yang belum dipahami cara pengolahannya.  Permen lunak diolah dari gel aloe vera, agar, jeli dan gula, kemudian dikeringkan, sehingga tahan sampai enam bulan dalam kemasan plastik polipropilen. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah melatih petani tentang teknologi pengolahan permen lunak gel aloe vera untuk komersialisasi. Metode pengabdian diawali dengan koordinasi dengan mitra, kemudian dilakukan pelatihan berupa penyampaian teori dan praktek, evaluasi ketrampilan petani sebelum dan setelah pelatihan berdasarkan korelasi Pearson, monitoring dan pendampingan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa petani terampil melakukan praktek pengolahan dan pengemasan permen lunak ditunjukkan nilai korelasi Pearson 0,8416.     Implementasi Teknologi Pengolahan Gel Aloe vera sebagai Es Krim Fungsional Pada Kelompok Tani di Ghra Sambiroto, Nanggulan, Kulon Progo, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta

    Ghra Sambiroto is the name of the aloe vera garden and its processing place, which is located in Banyuroto Hamlet, Kapanewon Nanggulan, Kulon Progo, DIY. There is a 2 Ha aloe vera garden of the Aloe vera var cinensis variety with thousands of aloe vera plants. The harvest time for aloe vera ranges from 8 to 24 months. Aloe vera leaves are used as gel drinks and non-food products. Gel drinks are trendy, but the processing process takes a long time and uses heat. This processing condition can trigger the breakdown of the aloe vera gel's antioxidants. Therefore, it is necessary to alternatively process aloe vera gel into a functional product with high antioxidant activity and benefits for health. This program aims to disseminate the processing of functional aloe vera ice cream as a source of antioxidants and its packaging. The activities were carried out through counseling, processing practices, and mentoring. The results showed that the participants understood the benefits of aloe vera gel for health and were skilled in making functional ice cream before packaging it. The components of the ice cream produced are 31.60-37.15% solids, 18.54-21.56% sucrose sugar, 9.20-9.74% protein, and antioxidant activity with a Radical Scavenging Activity (RSA) value. ) 12.52-14.40.Ghra Sambiroto adalah nama kebun lidah buaya yang terletak di Banyuroto, Nanggulan, Kulon Progo, DIY. Terdapat 2 Ha kebun lidah buaya varietas sinensis dengan ribuan tanaman lidah buaya. Umur panen lidah buaya berkisar antara 8 sampai 24 bulan. Saat ini daun lidah buaya dimanfaatkan sebagai alo vera gel drink dan produk non pangan. Dalam bentuk gel drink, produk lidah buaya sangat disukai, namun proses pengolahan menggunakan panas yang memicu kerusakan antioksidan gel lidah buaya.  Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk diseminasi pengolahan es krim lidah buaya fungsional dengan aktivitas antioksidan tinggi dan cara pengemasannya. Kegiatan dilakukan dengan penyuluhan, praktek  pengolahan dan pendampingan. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa peserta menjadi paham terhadap manfaat gel lidah buaya untuk kesehatan dan terampil dalam membuat es krim fungsional sampai pengemasannya. Komponen es krim yang dihasilkan adalah jumlah padatan 31,60-37,15%, gula sukrosa 18,54-21,56%,70%, protein 9,20-9,74% dan aktivitas antioksidan dengan nilai Radical Scavenging Activity (RSA) 12,52-14,40 %

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
