Genetic Diversity of Verticillium dahliae Populations From Olive and Potato in Lebanon
Verticillium dahliae is widely distributed in potato and olive fields in Lebanon, causing serious economic losses. However, little is known about the inoculum source, population structure, and genetic diversity of the pathogen or the mechanisms of dissemination within Lebanon. To understand the population structure, a total of 203 isolates sampled from olive (n = 78) and potato (n = 125) were characterized for species, mating type, and race, and the genetic relationships were delineated using 13 microsatellite markers. All isolates except one from potato were V. dahliae, with 55.1 and 12.1% race 1, and 43.6 and 83.1% race 2 in olive and potato, respectively. The genetic structure of the studied population was best described by two large and two small clusters. Membership in the two large clusters was determined by the presence or absence of the effector gene Ave1. Furthermore, genetic structure was moderately associated with the host of origin but was weakly associated with the geographic origin. All but four isolates represented by three multilocus haploid genotypes were MAT1-2. This study identified a clear lack of gene flow between virulence genotypes of V. dahliae despite the proximity of these cropping systems and the wide distribution of genetic diversity among hosts and geographic regions in Lebanon
The Three Lineages of the Diploid Hybrid Verticillium longisporum Differ in Virulence and Pathogenicity
Verticillium longisporum is an economically important vascular pathogen of Brassicaceae crops in different parts of the world. V longisporum is a diploid hybrid that consists of three different lineages, each of which originated from a separate hybridization event between two different sets of parental species. We used 20 isolates representing the three V longisporam lineages and the relative V dahliae, and performed pathogenicity tests on 11 different hosts, including artichoke, cabbage, cauliflower, cotton, eggplant, horseradish, lettuce, linseed, oilseed rape (canola), tomato, and watermelon. V longisporum was overall more virulent on the Brassicaceae crops than V dahliae, which was more virulent than V longisporum across the nonBrassicaceae crops. There were differences in virulence between the three V longisporum lineages. V longisporum lineage A1/D1 was the most virulent lineage on oilseed rape, and V longisporum lineage A1/D2 was the most virulent lineage on cabbage and horseradish. We also found that on the nonBrassicaceae hosts eggplant, tomato, lettuce, and watermelon, V longisporum was more or equally virulent than V dahliae. This suggests that V longisporum may have a wider potential host range than currently appreciated
Verticillium longisporum, the invisible threat to oilseed rape and other brassicaceous plant hosts
Introduction: The causal agents of Verticillium wilts are globally distributed pathogens that cause significant crop losses every year. Most Verticillium wilts are caused by V. dahliae, which is pathogenic on a broad range of plant hosts, whereas other pathogenic Verticillium species have more restricted host ranges. In contrast, V. longisporum appears to prefer brassicaceous plants and poses an increasing problem to oilseed rape production. Taxonomy: Kingdom Fungi; Phylum Ascomycota; Class Sordariomycetes; Subclass Hypocreomycetida; Family Plectosphaerellaceae; genus Verticillium. Disease symptoms: Dark unilateral stripes appear on the stems of apparently healthy looking oilseed rape plants at the end of the growing season. Microsclerotia are subsequently formed in the stem cortex beneath the epidermis. Genome: Verticillium longisporum is the only non-haploid species in the Verticillium genus, as it is an amphidiploid hybrid that carries almost twice as much genetic material as the other Verticillium species as a result of interspecific hybridization. Disease management: There is no effective fungicide treatment to control Verticillium diseases, and resistance breeding is the preferred strategy for disease management. However, only a few Verticillium wilt resistance genes have been identified, and monogenic resistance against V. longisporum has not yet been found. Quantitative resistance exists mainly in the Brassica C-genome of parental cabbage lines and may be introgressed in oilseed rape breeding lines. Common name: Oilseed rape colonized by V. longisporum does not develop wilting symptoms, and therefore the common name of Verticillium wilt is unsuitable for this crop. Therefore, we propose 'Verticillium stem striping' as the common name for Verticillium infections of oilseed rape.</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
