Recovery of modernist architecture in the Colombian Caribbean, through the rediscovery of architectural archives. The case of the domestic architecture of Miguel Farah Zakzuk

    No full text
The present research aims to study the phenomenon of modernism in the Caribbean region of Colombia through architecture archives as documentation and tools of graphic representation. Considering that this territory is home to a large number of modernist works that continue to be discovered today, thanks to recent publications that have unveiled the work of authors who were instrumental in modernizing the different cities of the Caribbean through architecture, leaving a significant impact on the region. Therefore, just as the modernist lessons of Colombian and foreign masters have long been studied in major cities such as Bogotá and Medellín, the intention is to also continue this investigation into the Caribbean territory, where new authors emerge, leaving behind an important modernist architectural legacy and in some cases also a graphical heritage. In this way, a research on the architecture of Miguel Farah Zakzuk begins, who was one of the young architects of the mid-20th century responsible for generating a syncretic fusion between traditional language, tailored to the specific conditions of the Caribbean tropics, and the new emerging modern style of the time, which allowed for new ways of conceiving and constructing architecture. The rediscovery and consistent exploration of an unpublished graphic archive containing part of the professional work of the studied author, together with architectural surveys, elements of graphic representation, and oral sources, allowed the initiation of this investigative work where the design methods of architect Miguel Farah are analyzed to conceive the new architecture of the mid-20th century in Caribbean cities, maintaining the essence of the tropical spirit in his works, under the international style that was in full swing

Semiclassical Molecular Dynamics for Spectroscopic Calculations of Complex Systems

    No full text
I will present some novel semiclassical methods for spectroscopic calculations. These approaches can be employed for spectroscopic calculations of gas-phase molecular and supramolecular systems up to hundreds of degrees of freedom, as well as to condensed phase systems. Some methods are based on a “divide-and-conquer” approach, where the full dimensional spectra are obtained as a composition of several lower dimensional ones. Others exploit hierarchically the different levels of accuracy of different semiclassical propagators. For instance, in a system-bath problem lower semiclassical accuracy is dedicated to the bath, while the system is treated with higher accuracy and the system spectrum is eventually singled out. All methods are amenable for ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. References 1. F. Gabas, G. Di Liberto, R. Conte, and M. Ceotto, Chemical Science 9 (41), 7885-8026 (2018); 2. X. Ma, G. Synergistic Effect of Carbon-Based Reinforcements on the Mechanical Properties of Cement-Based Composites

    No full text
Carbon reinforcements are used to improve the mechanical properties of cement, allowing the preparation of a strengthened and toughened composite. Functionalization through a reaction with acid is necessary to guarantee both a good dispersion in water and a strong interaction with cement. Different functionalized reinforcements improve the mechanical properties of the composites in comparison with pristine cement. The use of a combination of carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene nanoplatelets were analyzed in order to verify their synergistic effect. The use of functionalized carbon nanotubes and carbon fibers demonstrates an improvement of 71% in flexural strength and 540% in fracture energy

    Tunable MoS2 strain sensor

    No full text
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor for the realization of electronic devices such as sensors and transducers. Among other mechanical and electronic properties, MoS2 shows piezoresistive effect due to the strain-induced modulation of its electronic band-gap. In this work we present how the piezoresistive property of MoS2 can be exploited to realize a strain gauge. The non-linear response of the sensor is used to tune and enhance the sensitivity of the sensor in a specific strain range. We find that in optimal working conditions we can achieve a gauge factor of-96

Factors associated with eating disorders in adolescents: a systematic review

    No full text
Background and aim: The World Health Organization has placed eating disorders among the prior-ity mental illnesses for children and adolescents given the risk they imply for their health. Recognizing the risk factors associated with this problem can serve as the basis for the design of timely and effective interven-tions. The objective of the study was to identify the factors associated with eating behavior in adolescents through a systematic review. Methods: Systematic review. Search of the literature in the bibliographic sources CINAHL, CUIDEN, Pubmed, Dialnet, SCIELO and Science Direct. The search was conducted in October and November 2020. The search terms were Eating Disorders, Food Intake, and Adolescents. The evaluation of the methodological quality was carried out using a specific guide for observational epidemiological stud-ies. A narrative synthesis of the findings was made. Additionally, the vote counting and sign test technique was applied. Results: 25 studies were selected. The associated factors were body dissatisfaction, female gender, depression, low self-esteem, higher BMI that increases the risk of eating disorders. Conclusions: a high impact of psychological factors was observed. These should be considered in the design of effective interventions to prevent this disease, although the search needs to be broadened to identify larger and more complex studies that allow for a more comprehensive review. Differential Acquisition of m-Sequences using Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation

    No full text
In this contribution a novel sequential estimation method is proposed for the acquisition of mm-sequences. This sequential estimation method exploits the principle of iterative soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoding for enhancing the acquisition performance, and that of differential pre-processing for the sake of achieving an enhanced acquisition performance, when communicating over various communication environments. Hence the advocated acquisition arrangement is referred to as the Differential Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation (DRSSE) acquisition scheme. The DRSSE acquisition scheme exhibits a low complexity, which is similar to that of an mm-sequence generator, while achieving an acquisition time that is linearly dependent on the number of stages in the mm-sequence generator. A low acquisition time is achieved with the advent of the property that the proposed DRSSE scheme is capable of determining the real-time reliabilities associated with the decision concerning a set of, say SS, consecutive chips. This set of consecutive chips constitutes the sufficient initial condition for enabling the local mm-sequence generator to produce a synchronized local despreading mm-sequence replica. Owing to these attractive characteristics, the DRSSE acquisition scheme constitutes a promising initial synchronization scheme for acquisition of long mm-sequences, when communicating over various propagation environments

∑_(l+m=k,l,m≥0) ((α+l-1)¦l) ((β+m-1)¦m)=((α+β+k-1)¦k) and its application to negative binomial distribution

We prove here the following equation: ∑_(l+m=k,l,m≥0) ((α+l-1)¦l) ((β+m-1)¦m)=((α+β+k-1)¦k) and give its application to prove the reproductive property of the negative binomial distribution. These finite sum equation involving binomial coefficients and proof of the reproductive property are not known as far as the author knows.論文(Article)departmental bulletin pape
