Grief, bereavement and loss : the impact on people with intellectual disability
Stuart Wark and Michele Wiese write that as the life expectancy of individuals with an intellectual disability has risen there is an increased likelihood of experiencing the death of a significant other such as a parent, friend or housemate
Issues for people with intellectual disability in rural and remote Australia
Another 2020 webinar coordinated by ASID NSW/ACT occurred on the 15th July 2020 and looked at issues for people in rural and remote Australia. This webinar was presented by Laura Hogan from the Centre for Disability Studies an affiliate of Sydney University and Stuart Wark from the School of Rural Medicine at the University of New England in Armidale. The purpose of this webinar was two-fold. Firstly, it started with Stuart providing an overview of some of the challenges and barriers for rural people with intellectual disability, based on existing research reported in academic mediums including the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability, Research and Practice in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and Intellectual Disability Australasia. The second and probably more important aspect of the webinar was Laura's illustration, through narratives from practitioners in regional and remote areas, how some of these barriers are being successfully overcome
En 1908 la Vitagraph Company of America va llançar un curtmetratge de 15 minuts dirigit per J. Prevalence of Mental, Behavioural, and Neurobehavioural Disorders
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are known to be at high risk of developing a comorbid mental or behavioural disorder. However, there has only recently been an increased focus on the epidemiology of such disorders in the older population of people with IDD. Attempting to precisely quantify the prevalence and incidence of disorders in this cohort remain difficult, due to complications associated with diverse sampling methodologies, differing definitions of ‘older’, and variations in diagnostic criteria. Nonetheless, the expanding research base since the 1980s indicates that mental and behavioural disorders occur at higher rates among older people with IDD when compared to their mainstream peers. The prevalence of mental disorders for the older cohort tends to decrease in relation to the severity of the intellectual disability, but the reverse is true for behavioural disorders. Estimated prevalence rates for mental disorders vary considerably, but many studies report rates in the 20–30% range, which is higher than for the general community. Behavioural disorders are also very common in older people with IDD but are again hard to quantify precisely. Observed differences in prevalence between people with IDD and the general community may diminish over the age of 70 as dementias become more commonplace in both populations. Finally, some research indicates a greater likelihood of mental disorder amongst the older female population of people with IDD
Ageing, end-of-life care, and the National Disability Insurance Scheme: What can we learn from overseas?
The author of this conceptual article was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to travel to the United States, Ireland, and United Kingdom to meet with researchers, practitioners, and community agencies and review how support for people with intellectual disability is provided. A specific focus was upon provision of care for individuals who were either ageing or requiring palliative care. The project took place from June to August 2013 and involved face-to-face interviews and site visits with key academics, government representatives, and community providers in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, and Stoke-on-Trent. A priority was placed upon examining how the key features of leading practice models could be implemented within the Australian environment featuring a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). On the basis of the observations of practice, key points are discussed regarding the potential for improvements to the support of people with intellectual disability within the Australian context of the NDIS
Counselling Support for People with Intellectual Disabilities: The Use of Narrative Therapy
This article uses a descriptive case study design to examine the potential of narrative therapy as a direct intervention for adults with moderate-to-severe intellectual disabilities, autism and/or severe communication limitations. Archival clinical data on four individuals who received a form of social constructionist narrative therapy are examined for goal attainment. The data were analysed qualitatively with specific input from individuals, their families and carers. Findings indicate improvements in quality of life through reductions in situational and environmental anxieties, and in coping with grief and loss. The results suggest that narrative therapy techniques can be beneficial in assisting individuals with severe intellectual disability to achieve meaningful and persistent improvements in their life
Planning and evaluation of public health interventions
The principles of public health promotion have been outlined in previous chapters within this textbook. Planning, implementation and evaluation should be viewed as three equally necessary and complementary components of any public health program. This chapter provides an introduction to planning and evaluation with respect to public health promotions and interventions. This chapter focuses primarily on overarching concepts. It identifies a simple, six-stage public health planning model that assists project teams to move from the initial identification of a need through implementation to assessment of the outcomes, with the evaluation also identifying any needs that remain partially or completely unmet. The concepts of planning and evaluation should be viewed as part of an ongoing process; the planning of public health interventions should be informed through reviewing outcomes of relevant previous projects while the evaluation phase should then provide observations and recommendations for future programs
Does intellectual disability research consider the potential impact of geographic location?
Background. Residing in a rural location is associated with socioeconomic disadvantage and reduced access to essential services such as housing, education, transport and healthcare. However, it is not clear whether researchers consistently consider geographic impact for people with intellectual disability. Method. All research articles since January 2000 in the 'Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability' were reviewed to determine the geographic location of the study participants. Results. In approximately 50% of the 428 studies reviewed it was not possible to accurately determine participants' geographic location, or in some cases even the country in which the research was conducted. Only 6% of papers either focused on rural participants, or compared rural participants against metropolitan peers. Conclusions. Little attention has been paid to geographic location in the sampled intellectual disability literature. This failure to consider geographic disadvantage potentially limits the applicability of such research findings to a significant proportion of the community
