John Stuart Mill and the Employment of Married Women: Reconciling Utility and Justice
This paper explores the link between utilitarianism and feminism through the positions of John Stuart Mill. We try to reconcile Mill's conviction about the necessity of establishing equality between sexes with his position concerning the employment of married women. This reconciliation has already been attempted by other researchers. Our perspective is slightly different in that we seek to establish a globally coherent position by examining Mill's various writings in order to evaluate his feminism in terms of his utilitarian philosophy.John Stuart Mill ; Utilitarisme ; Feminisme ;

Nature and Structure of Personal Identity: an Analysis of Selected Works of G.W. Leibniz
Artykuł stanowi zmodyfikowaną wersję pracy licencjackiej napisanej przeze mnie w roku
2015, której promotorem był dr hab. Bogusław Paź.The main aim of this paper is to reconstruct G. W. Leibniz’s view on nature and
structure of human identity. For this purpose selected writings of the author and of
several other philosophers whose impact on his conclusion was the most noticeable are
exploited. Analysis of these sources in relation to Leibniz’s whole monadological system
provides us with the explication of human identity in his anthropology.
In the first part the author concentrates on the historical background of a reflection
on the notion of nature, which in Leibniz’s philosophy constitutes the basis of human
identity. The Hanoverian philosopher, as the author claims, continues Aristotle’s thought
on this issue. Afterwards a basic individual being – monad – is presented. Through the
monad the German philosopher managed to unite two – seemingly opposing – perspectives:
substancial (aristotelism) with “consciously-reflective”, which is synonymous with
Descartes’ cogito.
In the second part the author introduces the concept of the human person, which
indicates such features as rationality, substantiality and individuality. From the latter
flows such characteristics of personhood as uniqueness, distinctiveness and incommunicability. Even though this classical interpretation of the person was deconstructed
by Descartes, the author shows that the monadic subject did not lose the attributes
Leibniz’s processors wrote about.
In the third part the author presents John Locke’s interpretation of the human
identity described in his opus magnum – An essay concerning human understanding, in
opposition to which Leibniz developed his own theory. In the fourth part the structure
of human identity in the interpretation of the German is presented. The author of this
paper particularly focuses on the characteristics of its two dimensions: real identity and
moral identity. At the end, in the fifth part, the epistemological foundation of Leibniz’s
anthropology: perception, apperception and reflection, its specifics and the relation to
two levels of human identity presented in Nouveaux essais sur l’entendement humain are
explored.Adrianna Senczyszyn, studentka Uniwersytetu WrocławskiegoUniwersytet WrocławskiArystoteles, Metafizyka, oprac. M. Krąpiec, A. Maryniarczyk na podst. tłum. T. Żeleźniaka,

Strain accommodation by magmatism and faulting as rifting proceeds to breakup: Seismicity of the northern Ethiopian rift

Uppermost mantle (Pn) velocity model for the Afar region, Ethiopia: an insight into rifting processes
The Afar Depression, Ethiopia, offers unique opportunities to study the transition from continental rifting to oceanic spreading because the process is occurring onland. Using traveltime tomography and data from a temporary seismic deployment, we describe the first regional study of uppermost mantle P-wave velocities (VPn). We find two separate low VPn zones (as low as 7.2?km?s?1) beneath regions of localized thinned crust in northern Afar, indicating the existence of high temperatures and, potentially, partial melt. The zones are beneath and off-axis from, contemporary crustal magma intrusions in active magmatic segments, the Dabbahu-Manda-Hararo and Erta'Ale segments. This suggests that these intrusions can be fed by off-axis delivery of melt in the uppermost mantle and that discrete areas of mantle upwelling and partial melting, thought to characterize segmentation of the uppermost mantle at seafloor spreading centres, are initiated during the final stages of break-up

A diagnostic kit for optical emission lines shaped by accretion disc winds
Blueshifted absorption is the classic spectroscopic signature of an accretion disc wind in X-ray binaries and cataclysmic variables (CVs). However, outflows can also create pure emission lines, especially at optical wavelengths. Therefore, developing other outflow diagnostics for these types of lines is worthwhile. With this in mind, we construct a systematic grid of 3645 synthetic wind-formed H α line profiles for CVs with the radiative transfer code sirocco. Our grid yields a variety of line shapes: symmetric, asymmetric, single- to quadruple-peaked, and even P-Cygni profiles. About 20percnt of these lines – our ‘Gold’ sample – have strengths and widths consistent with observations. We use this grid to test a recently proposed method for identifying wind-formed emission lines based on deviations in the wing profile shape: the ’excess equivalent width diagnostic diagram’. We find that our Gold sample can preferentially populate the suggested ‘wind regions’ of this diagram. However, the method is highly sensitive to the adopted definition of the line profile ‘wing’. Hence, we propose a refined definition based on the full-width at half maximum to improve the interpretability of the diagnostic diagram. Furthermore, we define an approximate scaling relation for the strengths of wind-formed CV emission lines in terms of the outflow parameters. This relation provides a fast way to assess whether – and what kind of – outflow can produce an observed emission line. All our wind-based models are open-source and we provide an easy-to-use web-based tool to browse our full set of H α spectral profiles
