Magnomechanical backaction corrections due to coupling to higher order Walker modes and Kerr nonlinearities
The radiation pressure-like coupling between magnons and phonons in magnets
can modify the phonon frequency (magnomechanical spring effect) and decay rate
(magnomechanical decay) via dynamical backaction. Such effects have been
recently observed by coupling the uniform magnon mode of a magnetic sphere (the
Kittel mode) to a microwave cavity. In particular, the ability to evade
backaction effects was demonstrated [C.A. Potts et al., arXiv:2211.13766
[quant-ph] (2022)], a requisite for applications such as magnomechanical based
thermometry. However, deviations were observed from the predicted
magnomechanical decay rate within the standard theoretical model. In this work,
we account for these deviations by considering corrections due to (i) magnetic
Kerr nonlinearities and (ii) the coupling of phonons to additional magnon
modes. Provided that such additional modes couple weakly to the driven cavity,
our model yields a correction proportional to the average Kittel magnon mode
occupation. We focus our results on magnetic spheres, where we show that the
magnetostatic Walker modes couple to the relevant mechanical modes as
efficiently as the Kittel mode. Our model yields excellent agreement with the
experimental data.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figure
Harnessing online digital data in biodiversity monitoring
Online digital data from media platforms have the potential to complement biodiversity monitoring efforts. We propose a strategy for integrating these data into current biodiversity datasets in light of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.Peer reviewe
Immunogenicity, safety, and reactogenicity of heterologous COVID-19 primary vaccination incorporating mRNA, viral-vector, and protein-adjuvant vaccines in the UK (Com-COV2): a single-blind, randomised, phase 2, non-inferiority trial
Background
Given the importance of flexible use of different COVID-19 vaccines within the same schedule to facilitate rapid deployment, we studied mixed priming schedules incorporating an adenoviral-vectored vaccine (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 [ChAd], AstraZeneca), two mRNA vaccines (BNT162b2 [BNT], Pfizer–BioNTech, and mRNA-1273 [m1273], Moderna) and a nanoparticle vaccine containing SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein and Matrix-M adjuvant (NVX-CoV2373 [NVX], Novavax).
Methods
Com-COV2 is a single-blind, randomised, non-inferiority trial in which adults aged 50 years and older, previously immunised with a single dose of ChAd or BNT in the community, were randomly assigned (in random blocks of three and six) within these cohorts in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive a second dose intramuscularly (8–12 weeks after the first dose) with the homologous vaccine, m1273, or NVX. The primary endpoint was the geometric mean ratio (GMR) of serum SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike IgG concentrations measured by ELISA in heterologous versus homologous schedules at 28 days after the second dose, with a non-inferiority criterion of the GMR above 0·63 for the one-sided 98·75% CI. The primary analysis was on the per-protocol population, who were seronegative at baseline. Safety analyses were done for all participants who received a dose of study vaccine. The trial is registered with ISRCTN, number 27841311.
Findings
Between April 19 and May 14, 2021, 1072 participants were enrolled at a median of 9·4 weeks after receipt of a single dose of ChAd (n=540, 47% female) or BNT (n=532, 40% female). In ChAd-primed participants, geometric mean concentration (GMC) 28 days after a boost of SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike IgG in recipients of ChAd/m1273 (20 114 ELISA laboratory units [ELU]/mL [95% CI 18 160 to 22 279]) and ChAd/NVX (5597 ELU/mL [4756 to 6586]) was non-inferior to that of ChAd/ChAd recipients (1971 ELU/mL [1718 to 2262]) with a GMR of 10·2 (one-sided 98·75% CI 8·4 to ∞) for ChAd/m1273 and 2·8 (2·2 to ∞) for ChAd/NVX, compared with ChAd/ChAd. In BNT-primed participants, non-inferiority was shown for BNT/m1273 (GMC 22 978 ELU/mL [95% CI 20 597 to 25 636]) but not for BNT/NVX (8874 ELU/mL [7391 to 10 654]), compared with BNT/BNT (16 929 ELU/mL [15 025 to 19 075]) with a GMR of 1·3 (one-sided 98·75% CI 1·1 to ∞) for BNT/m1273 and 0·5 (0·4 to ∞) for BNT/NVX, compared with BNT/BNT; however, NVX still induced an 18-fold rise in GMC 28 days after vaccination. There were 15 serious adverse events, none considered related to immunisation.
Interpretation
Heterologous second dosing with m1273, but not NVX, increased transient systemic reactogenicity compared with homologous schedules. Multiple vaccines are appropriate to complete primary immunisation following priming with BNT or ChAd, facilitating rapid vaccine deployment globally and supporting recognition of such schedules for vaccine certification.
Funding
UK Vaccine Task Force, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and National Institute for Health Research. NVX vaccine was supplied for use in the trial by Novavax
Valence shell electronically excited states of norbornadiene and quadricyclane
The absolute photoabsorption cross sections of norbornadiene (NBD) and quadricyclane (QC), two isomers with chemical formula C7H8 that are attracting much interest for solar energy storage applications, have been measured from threshold up to 10.8 eV using the Fourier transform spectrometer at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility. The absorption spectrum of NBD exhibits some sharp structure associated with transitions into Rydberg states, superimposed on several broad bands attributable to valence excitations. Sharp structure, although less pronounced, also appears in the absorption spectrum of QC. Assignments have been proposed for some of the absorption bands using calculated vertical transition energies and oscillator strengths for the electronically excited states of NBD and QC. Natural transition orbitals indicate that some of the electronically excited states in NBD have a mixed Rydberg/valence character, whereas the first ten excited singlet states in QC are all predominantly Rydberg in the vertical region. In NBD, a comparison between the vibrational structure observed in the experimental 11B1–11A1 (3sa1 ← 5b1) band and that predicted by Franck–Condon and Herzberg–Teller modeling has necessitated a revision of the band origin and of the vibrational assignments proposed previously. Similar comparisons have encouraged a revision of the adiabatic first ionization energy of NBD. Simulations of the vibrational structure due to excitation from the 5b2 orbital in QC into 3p and 3d Rydberg states have allowed tentative assignments to be proposed for the complex structure observed in the absorption bands between ∼5.4 and 7.0 eV
Persistence of immune response in heterologous COVID vaccination schedules in the Com-COV2 study – a single-blind, randomised trial incorporating mRNA, viral-vector and protein-adjuvant vaccines
Background
Heterologous COVID vaccine priming schedules are immunogenic and effective. This report aims to understand the persistence of immune response to the viral vectored, mRNA and protein-based COVID-19 vaccine platforms used in homologous and heterologous priming combinations, which will inform the choice of vaccine platform in future vaccine development.
Methods
Com-COV2 was a single-blinded trial in which adults ≥ 50 years, previously immunised with single dose ‘ChAd’ (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, AZD1222, Vaxzevria, Astrazeneca) or ‘BNT’ (BNT162b2, tozinameran, Comirnaty, Pfizer/BioNTech), were randomised 1:1:1 to receive a second dose 8–12 weeks later with either the homologous vaccine, or ‘Mod’ (mRNA-1273, Spikevax, Moderna) or ‘NVX’ (NVX-CoV2373, Nuvaxovid, Novavax). Immunological follow-up and the secondary objective of safety monitoring were performed over nine months. Analyses of antibody and cellular assays were performed on an intention-to-treat population without evidence of COVID-19 infection at baseline or for the trial duration.
Findings
In April/May 2021, 1072 participants were enrolled at a median of 9.4 weeks after receipt of a single dose of ChAd (N = 540, 45% female) or BNT (N = 532, 39% female) as part of the national vaccination programme.
In ChAd-primed participants, ChAd/Mod had the highest anti-spike IgG from day 28 through to 6 months, although the heterologous vs homologous geometric mean ratio (GMR) dropped from 9.7 (95% CI (confidence interval): 8.2, 11.5) at D28 to 6.2 (95% CI: 5.0, 7.7) at D196. The heterologous/homologous GMR for ChAd/NVX similarly dropped from 3.0 (95% CI:2.5,3.5) to 2.4 (95% CI:1.9, 3.0).
In BNT-primed participants, decay was similar between heterologous and homologous schedules with BNT/Mod inducing the highest anti-spike IgG for the duration of follow-up. The adjusted GMR (aGMR) for BNT/Mod compared with BNT/BNT increased from 1.36 (95% CI: 1.17, 1.58) at D28 to 1.52 (95% CI: 1.21, 1.90) at D196, whilst for BNT/NVX this aGMR was 0.55 (95% CI: 0.47, 0.64) at day 28 and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.49, 0.78) at day 196.
Heterologous ChAd-primed schedules produced and maintained the largest T-cell responses until D196. Immunisation with BNT/NVX generated a qualitatively different antibody response to BNT/BNT, with the total IgG significantly lower than BNT/BNT during all follow-up time points, but similar levels of neutralising antibodies.
Interpretation
Heterologous ChAd-primed schedules remain more immunogenic over time in comparison to ChAd/ChAd. BNT-primed schedules with a second dose of either mRNA vaccine also remain more immunogenic over time in comparison to BNT/NVX. The emerging data on mixed schedules using the novel vaccine platforms deployed in the COVID-19 pandemic, suggest that heterologous priming schedules might be considered as a viable option sooner in future pandemics. Christian Science Healing.
The thing that has caused the most
criticism of Christian Science is that
it claims to heal the sick without
drugs, by spiritual mean* only.
through the medium of prayer, and
as this ia the phase of Christiai
Science in which the public seems t«
be most interested I shall tike the
liberty of discussing the subject with
some particularity, and shall endeavor to answer the objections that have
been presented to healing by prayer.
There arc two c'asses of critics
who attack Christian Science healing
First, those who say that it is impossible, and therefore preposterous,
for Christian Science lo claim that
the sick may be healed without drugs,
through the medium of prayer, and.
second. those who claim that it is un-
scriptural to attempt to do so. All
criticism of Christian Science healing
falls under these two heads.
With respect to the first class,
those who say that it is impossible,
it can only be answered tbat through
Christian Science all kinds of diseases
have been healed. This cannot be denied. The entire Christian Science
movcmcJtt is made up of people who
have been healed. Most of them
turned to Christian Science a* a last
>rt, after having failed to get r<
lief through other channels. Chrii
tian Science churches are buill with
money contributed as a thank offering lo God by those who have licen
healed through Christian Science.
Tbe person in this day who denies
tbat Christian Science heals the tick
is merely closing his eyes to what be
docs not wish to sec. It is a fact that
Christian Science does heal all manner of disease and suffering, and it is
a fact for which everyone should be
grateful.
With respect to the second class,
those who think that it is unscriptural
Christian Science to teach that
lick may lie healed without drugs,
by spiritual means only, through the
medium of prayer, ] will say
thai it is difficult to understand how

that lu- of himself did not do anything, but it was Cod operating
through him that did the works.
Giving all honor and power to the
lather be said, "the Son r*jn do nothing of himself" .
On all occasions Jesus denied that
he had any power in or of himself,
and declared always that it was God
operating through him that enabled
him to do the works. He likewise declared that the divine power, operating through him, was available to
every one and could be r*«*se**ed and
exercised by every one who accepted
his teachings and fulfilled their requirements
In this connection it is significant
that Jesus never al any time sent out
his disciples to preach without telling
them also lo heal the sick. There is
no Scriptural authority for preaching
that does not have coupled with it
the command to heal. "Go ye into all
tl. world and preach the gospel" and
li 1 the sick' were his commands.
Le there should be any doubt about
it lie said "Verilv, venly, I jay unto
•yon. He that believe th on me, the
works that I do shall he do also; and
greater works than these shall he do;
because I go unto my Father." Almost the b«| words that he uttered
before his ascension, were; "These
signs shall follow them that believe"
and-among other things he enumerated that they should hcaj the sick.
Not once in all the record did he
ever say to use drugs. Is it reasonable to suppose that be would have
commanded his followers lo heal the
Sick by spiritual means and without
drugs unless he had known that it
was possible to do so? Christian
Scientist* are striving to obey Jesus
in his two-fold command to "preach
the gospel" and "heal the sick.*' and
in doing so they have met with such
success that Christian Science is now
recognized as an efficient curative
system.
' Primitive Christian Healing.
It was a surprise to tne, as it doubtless will be to some of you, to learn
that the primitive church healed the
sick and raised the dead. This fact
was one of the things that first
opened my thought to Christian
Science and caused me to see that tn
healing the sick, the Christian Science
church was not only obeying the
commands of Jesus to go into all the
world and preach the gospel and heal
the sick, but was in fact re-establishing the healing work of the primitive
church.
History records that the healing
of the sick was a part of the regular
church ministry for three hundred
years after the crucifixion, and that
the dead were raised during the /irst
and second centuries. Afterwards the
healing power was lost and history
shows why. You will recall that the
Emperor Constantine became a con*
vert to Christianity in the third century. Tradition records that he was
healed of an incurable disease by
member of the Christian
church, and that out of gratitude for
his healing he became an ardent
Christian. He made the Christian religion the official religion of his empire with the result that the church
became very popular. Multitudes of
people united with it, not because of
their spiritual growth or because they
understood its teachings, but merely
because it was tbe proper thing to do.
The official* and courtiers made haste
to unite with the church and in time
it became a semi-political institution
and spirituality departed from it.
From tha.t period the church went
down until it seemingly reached the
bottom at the time of'Martin Luther.
It had then fallen into such disorder
that an upheaval occurred within its
ranks, and from then till now tbr
trend of human thought has been upward towards a better understanding
of God. The Christian Science movement means tbat »c have gotten back
once more into the .tone of primitive
Christianity, and wc are again witnessing, to sotne extent at least, the
same results from the teachings 0.
Jesus that were produced by the
primitive church
What further things shall be

consciousness has been to destroy
discord and to establish peace.
It is highly important, therefore
that everyone should become familiai
w ith the law of Mind, the law of
Spirit, and learn Its operation. We
have all of us known a good deal
about the so-called laws of matter.
but we have the Bible statement that
the law of Spirit shall overcome
"the law of sin and death." Christian Science is the only thing I know
I that defines the law of Spirit, and
explains its processes and its operation, so that people everywhere may
understand it. and apply it, and prove
it for t hem-el ve*.
What Is Christian Science?
Christian Science is a religion. It
is the Science of Christianity—the
science of God and man. It reveal*.
spiritual law. and explains the operation of that law in its relation to man
and the universe. Il defines mortal
nd and immortal Mind, and so
ikes plain ihe difference between
mortal men and man made by God
His image and likeness.
Christian Science pleads (or a i
tional understanding of God in place
of mere belief about Him, and it is
King mankind to look for the real
.nation in Mind and not in matter,
declares that Cod is not the author
sin. sickness, or death, hence these
mdittons are illegitimate and can
be destroyed by a knowledge of the

or die. and recalls the solemn declaration of the Scripture that God gave
man as his birthright dominion ovei
all tbe earth and overjll that it con
lained. Jesus said, "Ye shall know
the truth, and the truth shall make
>*.u free" Christian Science says „
to the lirecl and suffering man who
is wandering about without any dominion at all. that the knowledge of
the truth will set him free from his
bondage to »in, suffering, sorrow, and
failure, and will give to him that dominion which God said in the beginning belonged to man.
A correct understanding of God,
therefore, is necessary as the foundation of religion. Any system of religious teaching that is founded upon
an iiiii-erfecl or erroneous conception
'■i God must necessarily fail to bring
to the believer the comfort and help
that he seeks. When we look around
and -ee the devotion and fidelity of
People lo their religious beliefs, and
then see how often they fail to real-
i.-e the benefits for which they seek.
it is u fair deduction that there is
something wrong about their under-
standing of Cod.

The Bible says that everything God
made was good, and Christian Science
stands on that declaration, and with
that as a starting-point. Christian
Scientists proceed to prove that good
is ever-present, and has power to destroy evil, and that when man is gov-
crnec! by good as Principle he is
healthy and happy.
How Healing Is Accomplished.
The thing that most people consider difficult to understand is how healing is accomplished through Chris-
tion Science. Conceding that God is
Mind or Principle, they ask. How is
that Principle to be brought into
lationship with the human mind,
as to destroy sickness and sin? In
other words, how can man proceed
to establish the unity between himself and spiritual law so that this law
may operate through him. and free
him from sickness and from the desire to sin?
Christian Science explains the mat
.ter. and makes it plain. In fact, Jesus
explained it and made it so plain that
there never should have been any
misunderstanding about it.
If you were to connect your lamp
to an electric wire with a wooden rod
you would have no light, but if you
made the connection with a metal
rod yon would come into instantaneous communication with the powerhouse at the other end of the line,
and your light would glow. Cod is
Spirit, and when people try to establish the connection between themselves and Spirit with the wooden
rods of human will, ignorance, selfishness, pride, or any other form of
wrong thinking they will be disappointed; but when they use rods of
the true metal of truth, love, humility.'meekness, kindness, and the golden rule of doing unto others as you
would have others do unto you the
nexus will be established and the divine power will flow from Spirit into
the human consciousness, imparting
to it nualities and capabilities that it
bad not possessed before and bringing into it a sense of peace that it

Effect of priming interval on reactogenicity, peak immunological response, and waning after homologous and heterologous COVID-19 vaccine schedules: exploratory analyses of Com-COV, a randomised control trial
Background: Priming COVID-19 vaccine schedules have been deployed at variable intervals globally, which might influence immune persistence and the relative importance of third-dose booster programmes. Here, we report exploratory analyses from the Com-COV trial, assessing the effect of 4-week versus 12-week priming intervals on reactogenicity and the persistence of immune response up to 6 months after homologous and heterologous priming schedules using the vaccines BNT162b2 (tozinameran, Pfizer/BioNTech) and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AstraZeneca).
Methods: Com-COV was a participant-masked, randomised immunogenicity trial. For these exploratory analyses, we used the trial's general cohort, in which adults aged 50 years or older were randomly assigned to four homologous and four heterologous vaccine schedules using BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 with 4-week or 12-week priming intervals (eight groups in total). Immunogenicity analyses were done on the intention-to-treat (ITT) population, comprising participants with no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection at baseline or for the trial duration, to assess the effect of priming interval on humoral and cellular immune response 28 days and 6 months post-second dose, in addition to the effects on reactogenicity and safety. The Com-COV trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, 69254139 (EudraCT 2020–005085–33).
Findings: Between Feb 11 and 26, 2021, 730 participants were randomly assigned in the general cohort, with 77–89 per group in the ITT analysis. At 28 days and 6 months post-second dose, the geometric mean concentration of anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike IgG was significantly higher in the 12-week interval groups than in the 4-week groups for homologous schedules. In heterologous schedule groups, we observed a significant difference between intervals only for the BNT162b2–ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group at 28 days. Pseudotyped virus neutralisation titres were significantly higher in all 12-week interval groups versus 4-week groups, 28 days post-second dose, with geometric mean ratios of 1·4 (95% CI 1·1–1·8) for homologous BNT162b2, 1·5 (1·2–1·9) for ChAdOx1 nCoV-19–BNT162b2, 1·6 (1·3–2·1) for BNT162b2–ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, and 2·4 (1·7–3·2) for homologous ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. At 6 months post-second dose, anti-spike IgG geometric mean concentrations fell to 0·17–0·24 of the 28-day post-second dose value across all eight study groups, with only homologous BNT162b2 showing a slightly slower decay for the 12-week versus 4-week interval in the adjusted analysis. The rank order of schedules by humoral response was unaffected by interval, with homologous BNT162b2 remaining the most immunogenic by antibody response. T-cell responses were reduced in all 12-week priming intervals compared with their 4-week counterparts. 12-week schedules for homologous BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19–BNT162b2 were up to 80% less reactogenic than 4-week schedules.
Interpretation: These data support flexibility in priming interval in all studied COVID-19 vaccine schedules. Longer priming intervals might result in lower reactogenicity in schedules with BNT162b2 as a second dose and higher humoral immunogenicity in homologous schedules, but overall lower T-cell responses across all schedules. Future vaccines using these novel platforms might benefit from schedules with long intervals.
