Identifying Yalom’s group therapeutic factors in anonymous mental health discussions on Reddit: a mixed-methods analysis using large language models, topic modeling and human supervision

    No full text
Introduction Online communities provide valuable, peer-led spaces for discussing mental health issues, offering support that can complement traditional therapy. In this study, we adopt an interpretive approach by applying Yalom's group therapeutic factors to explore how mental health–focused Reddit discussions may reflect group therapy processes. Methods We propose a practical methodological framework for large-scale qualitative research. Using a mixed-methods approach, we integrate advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques—including Large Language Models (GPT-3.5 Turbo 16k), cosine similarity, and BERTopic—with human validation to analyze 6,745 comments from mental health–focused Subreddits. Results The results show that a large portion of the data can be interpreted through Yalom's therapeutic factors, such as Instillation of Hope, Group Cohesion, and Altruism, suggesting a generally supportive and empathetic online environment. However, unfiltered negative dynamics, including shared suffering and maladaptive coping strategies, also appeared in the discussions. Discussion By grounding NLP-based analyses in a well-established therapeutic framework and incorporating human expertise, we demonstrate a transparent, scalable approach to examining large-scale online mental health data. These findings underscore the potential of online communities for enhancing peer-led mental health support, while emphasizing the importance of theoretical grounding in interpreting such digital spaces

Digital technology and teaching methods in nursing education: a scoping review protocol

    No full text
Introduction In a rapidly evolving world shaped by digital transformation, digital technologies are increasingly being used in healthcare. To use them effectively, nursing staff, patients and their caregivers need the appropriate skills. To date, digital literacy in general, digital skills and (digital) technologies have played a minor role in German nursing curricula. In addition, little is known about the use of technology in nursing education and about effective ways to enhance digital competence. This scoping review aims to identify current literature on innovative and experiential-based teaching and learning methods for developing competence in technology and digitalisation for nurses and informal caregivers, as well as digital technologies that are being used in this educational context. Methods and analysis This scoping review, which will be designed and conceptualised using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for conducting scoping reviews, will take place from April 2025 to January 2026. The search will be conducted on the databases CINAHL, Emcare, Embase, Medline and ERIC. Screening and extraction will be peer reviewed and follow predefined criteria, as well as opportunities for free-text responses. The extracted data will be analysed using absolute and relative frequencies. Free-text responses will be analysed using qualitative content Analysis.Ethics and dissemination As an ethics vote is not required to conduct a scoping review, this will not be obtained. The results will be disseminated via open access publication in a peer-reviewed journal and through presentations at conferences

Background: The requirements for high quality, future-oriented nursing education have been gradually increasing for years and at the same time, the need for quality-enhancing further development. In order to promote the development of high quality and assurance of nursing (vocational) education, it makes sense to create uniform quality criteria and levels. Methods: This dissertation dealt with aspects of nursing education on the basis of three subprojects. The aim of the first study was to show which form of apprenticeship nursing favors, whether and in what form continuing and further training efforts are available, and which areas are favored here. The aim of the second study was to compare the results of the oral, written and practical examination results of the trainees of all health and nursing schools in the state of Berlin, based on the different institutions and forms of training. The purpose of the third study was to examine the extent to which there is a link between sponsorship, the size of an outpatient service and its regional situation with regard to staffing, job-creation, training needs and the occurrence of care problems. Results: The results of the first study showed that 59% of the trainees were sure that they would want to continue their vocational training after completing their training. Of the non-academic continuing education opportunities, the further education in anesthetics and intensive care as well as the further education in the operating theater and the practical tutor were the most interesting for the students. The second study showed that the proportion of non-completed statutory audits over the period 2008-2013 was 10.3%. At the first "trial", 89.7% of the trainees successfully completed all parts of the examination, with 10.7% of the examinations in traditional training facilities failing. Compared to this, there were 7.4% in the generalist form of education, and 5.5% in the academic form of study. In the third study, it became apparent that the higher the need for the corresponding training topic, the higher the importance was assessed. With regard to the nurses employed, the study revealed that the proportion of registered nurses with a share of more than 60% was higher in the non-private outpatient services than in the private institutions. Conclusions: The results indicate that there is a great deal of interest in continuing vocational training for nursing trainees. In addition, it has been shown that the results of examinations in facilities that have been modeled have achieved much more homogenous results, which could support the introduction of centralized testing procedures for all audit areas. Regardless of sponsorship and setting, nursing professionals should be able to provide training with comparable content and levels, and enable their graduates to care for caregivers independent of age and across sectors

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

    No full text
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
