    Invasion success of a global avian invader is explained by within-taxon niche structure and association with humans in the native range

    Aim To mitigate the threat invasive species pose to ecosystem functioning, reli- able risk assessment is paramount. Spatially explicit predictions of invasion risk obtained through bioclimatic envelope models calibrated with native species distribution data can play a critical role in invasive species management. Fore- casts of invasion risk to novel environments, however, remain controversial. Here, we assess how species’ association with human-modified habitats in the native range and within-taxon niche structure shape the distribution of invasive populations at biogeographical scales and influence the reliability of predictions of invasion risk. Location Africa, Asia and Europe. Methods We use ~1200 native and invasive ring-necked parakeet (Psittacula krameri) occurrences and associated data on establishment success in combi- nation with mtDNA-based phylogeographic structure to assess niche dynam- ics during biological invasion and to generate predictions of invasion risk. Niche dynamics were quantified in a gridded environmental space while bioclimatic models were created using the biomod2 ensemble modelling framework. Results Ring-necked parakeets show considerable niche expansion into climates colder than their native range. Only when incorporating a measure of human modification of habitats within the native range do bioclimatic envelope mod- els yield credible predictions of invasion risk for parakeets across Europe. Inva- sion risk derived from models that account for differing niche requirements of phylogeographic lineages and those that do not achieve similar statistical accu- racy, but there are pronounced differences in areas predicted to be susceptible for invasion. Main conclusions Information on within-taxon niche structure and especially association with humans in the native range can substantially improve predic- tive models of invasion risk. To provide policymakers with robust predictions of invasion risk, including these factors into bioclimatic envelope models is recommended

    Geographic profiling in Nazi Berlin: fact and fiction

    Geographic profiling uses the locations of connected crime sites to make inferences about the probable location of the offender’s ‘anchor point’ (usually a home, but sometimes a workplace). We show how the basic ideas of the method were used in a Gestapo investigation that formed the basis of a classic German novel about domestic resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War. We use modern techniques to re-analyse this case, and show that these successfully locate the Berlin home address of Otto and Elise Hampel, who had distributed hundreds of anti-Nazi postcards, after analysing just 34 of the 214 incidents that took place before their arrest. Our study provides the first empirical evidence to support the suggestion that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts such as graffiti and theft could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur

    The aim of this thesis is to determine how women are treated in selectedworks of Henry de Montherlant. This is explored by examining their relationshipswith other women as well as with men. Inevitably, this leads to an analysis ofthe multifaceted area of love. Part I researches Montherlant's prose work and included in this section is the investigation of the importance of 'l'ordre male' to the author and the influence this exerts over his early prose work in the areas of tauromachy, war and sport, and where the male adherence to this concept leaves women. The 'syncretisme et alternance' which is central to Montherlant's thinking is explored in this section.Part 2 is concerned with Montherlant's theatre in which the psychological development of the main characters is of great importance. It is in this section that a comparative study is made of the influence of Mme. Elisabeth Zehrfuss' written contribution to La Reine morte. Her unpublished notes are set out in full in the Appendix. The thesis also draws on the unpublished correspondence between Henry de Montherlant and Elisabeth Zehrfuss between the years 1934 and 1945. An investigation is made as to whether or not there are any differences between the way women are treated in Montherlant's prose and in his theatre and the conclusion is drawn that there are

    Noradrenergic and Cholinergic Reinnervation of Islet Grafts in Diabetic Rats

    Grafted islets become denervated due to the islet transplantation procedure. The aim of the present study was 1) to examine whether islet grafts in the liver, the spleen, and under the kidney capsule in rats become reinnervated following the transplantation and experimental procedures used in our laboratory, 2) whether there is any difference in reinnervation at these different sites, and 3) how these results relate to previous physiological experiments. Isogeneic isolated islets were transplanted into diabetic Albino Oxford rats, resulting in normoglycaemia. After at least 5 wk, graft-receiving organs were removed and several antibodies were employed to detect insulin, neuron-specific proteins, and cholinergic and noradrenergic nerve fibers. Islets in all three receiving organs contained viable insulin-positive B-cells. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as well as the growth-associated protein B-50 was observed at all sites. The cholinergic marker choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was localized in islets grafts at all sites, but with the lowest density in the spleen. Staining for the noradrenergic markers tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH) was observed in islet grafts at all sites with the lowest density in grafts under the kidney capsule. All these neurochemical substances were most frequently observed in fibers associated with blood vessels, which may be the route along which nerves grow into the graft. It can be concluded that 1) islet grafts in the liver, in the spleen and under the kidney capsule become reinnervated; 2) the innervation pattern of the islet grafts differs only slightly from that in the control pancreatic islets; and 3) in combination with our previously physiological data, we can conclude that these nerve fibers are, at least partly, functionally active.

    An economic analysis of the production of hydrogen from wind-generated electricity for use in transport applications

    Wind-generated electricity is often considered a particularly promising option for producing hydrogen from renewable energy sources. However, the economic performances of such systems generally remain unclear because of unspecified or favorable assumptions and operating conditions. The aim of this paper is to clarify these conditions by examining how the hydrogen produced is used. The analysis that has been conducted in the framework of the HyFrance 3 project concerns hydrogen for transport applications. Different technical systems are considered such as motorway hydrogen filling stations, Hythane®-fueled buses or second-generation biofuels production, which present contrasted hydrogen use characteristics. This analysis reveals considerable variations in hydrogen production costs depending on the demand profiles concerned, with the most favorable configurations being those in which storage systems are kept to a minimum.wind power ; hydrogen production
