ZDENEK STRMISKA This article starts with a reflection upon the epistemological status of sociological research on global societies and specific types of societies. The article addresses the question of the role of sociological studies about Soviet Type Societies (STS), specifically those done in France, where this type of research is present but not sufficiently developed. In his analysis of the social system of these societies the author defines general and specific characteristics of the monocratic system of management. He maintains that major difficulties of functioning and development within this system are rooted in the bolchevik concept of the society, its representations and underlying value orientations. The insurmountable difficulties of the system find their expression in the legitimation crisis of the STS. The author examines the crisis and collapse of the social system of the STS as a joint product of structural characteristics and particular changing conditions, and attempts to explain specific patterns of social change in some of these societies. The article summarizes major data which constitute the point of departure for the transition of the former Soviet Type Societies to a new social system. И also attempts to characterize social and cultural features of the transitional post-communist societies. The article examines the development of social and political cultures and the first changes in the social structures of STS.
The Socialist Program and Social Relationships in the U.SJS.R. and Eastern Europe.
This study focuses on certain key problems in the sociological analysis of soviet-type societies, id. est, the U.S.S.R. and the socialist countries of Eastern and Central Europe.
In the first chapter the author sets forth the theories and ideologies of these societies and their place in contemporary Sociology, adding a brief personal commentary on these trends of thought.
The second chapter deals with the problems of the description and synchronie analysis of these societies. Discussions concerning the content and general effectiveness of economic transformations are usually centered on the rapport between ownership and appropriation, the status of the worker in the economy (the salary question) and the division of labor. By adding to this a description of political relationships and social differences, the author attempts to present a more developed study of these factors.
Certains specific problems linked with the historical development of the soviet society are also presented in confrontation of Charles Bettelheim's analysis of this question in Luttes de classe en U.R.S.S.
The interplay of Bolchevic ideology on the development of soviet society is also raised, and a study of Leninism and Stalinism is undertaken in the light of the general elementary structures of this ideology.
In conclusion the author tries to determine the relationship between the social systems of the countries studied, the meaning of "capitalism", "socialism" or "investment" in a theoretical analysis of the socialist reality.
Strmiska Zdenek. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Differentiation of Social and Political Cultures in the "Prague Spring".
This study deals with specific differences within the cultural and ideological orientations of members of Czech society in the course of the Prague Spring of 1968. It is based on results of surveys carried out at that time and on speeches and political texts by spokespersons for the movement.
In the Prague Spring we can distinguish four basic types of socio-political orientation :
1) A very large majority, indeed almost the whole of society supports the movement in the course of its development, but the monocratic or quasi-monocratic current of thought, with its ties to reality and to pre-reform ideology, does not disappear from social awareness although it undergoes modification. Some 20 % of the respondents belong in this category.
2) The dominant reformist current is tied to the reformist leadership of the party ; this link with power, or more precisely with the reformist majority, gives the Movement specific characteristics which distinguish it from the majority of other social movements in soviet-type societies. In many respects, the orientation of this movement is pluralist and democratic. At the same time, the representatives of the movement are attached to the notion of global regulation of the political process and to the creation of an optimal network of social and political organisations. In view of the ideological conceptions of this current, we describe it as "pluralist-globalist", since the pluralist aspects are broadly preponderant. According to our analyses, some 45 % of people belong in this current of thought.
3) The current of integral pluralism is opposed to all restrictions on pluralist democracy and emphasises the importance of institutional guarantees of democracy, above all the role of the opposition. The proportiort of its advocates in the part of the surveyed population which belongs to this current is around 25 %.
4) The silent minority is reduced by the influence of this important social movement but nonetheless does not disappear. Its size is around 10%.
The study also examines the theoretical and ideological output associated with the Movement. It compares the Prague Spring with Gorbachev's reforms, records similarities and dissimilarities, and comes to the conclusion that the two movements, despite their origins, are not the same kind.
Strmiska Zdenek.
Zdenek Strmiska, Blanka Vavakova : Social stratification in socialist society.
At first this article puts forward the main results of a research concerning the social stratification of Czechoslovak society, made in 1967 by a team of sociologists under the direction of Pavel Machonin. This study based on a sample of 13.215 persons deals with the vertical division concerning labour (nature and complexity), standard of living, income, power, educational and occupational training. An additional study deals with social prestige, social relations and socially determined choices, representations and evaluations of social status... This research offers an analysis of the quantitative distribution of partial status, an elaboration of an index of synthetic status, a taxonomie analysis of status patterns, which enable us to determine the main levels of stratification and a factor analysis of vertical division. In the second part of this article, the authors examine some of the methodological and theoretical problems of this research. They analyse the interconnections between the social structure and the social stratification of socialist society, underlining the contradictions specific to the stratification of Czechoslovak society, and in particular the oppositions between the trends of the economic and political systems. They also show the influence of institutionalized values upon the patterns of social stratification. They raise some problems regarding the definition of the political status and its role within socialist society.
Strmiska Zdenek, Vavakova Blanka.
