Till upplysningens försvar : Sexualupplysarens egen beskrivning av sin verksamhet under 1930-talet

The following essay aims to further studies in the usage of a specific term among Swedish educators and informers during the 30s. The term in question is enlightenment. The enlightenment term during the 30s in Sweden was often associated, in specific contexts, with others like propaganda, information and advertising. Swedish public informers use the term to describe themselves as an enlightenment agency or upplysningsverksamhet. Their missions being to inform the public of knowledge. One such agency was the Swedish sexual educational journal Populär tidskrift för sexuell upplysning. In 1933 the journal was charged with being indecent and harmful of discipline. This essay follows the discussions in the court centering around the term and the journals defense in using the term. The purpose of the essay is to argue that enlightenment, when used by public informers, sets itself apart by drawing inspiration from its heritage. Contrary to earlier studies the result of this essay, although of a narrower scope, shows a more refined and less confusing usage of the term. The journal clearly arguments for what defines their agency and why the knowledge they provide should be deemed enlightening. Led by doctors the agency provides knowledge they deem essential for the wellbeing of the public. Their arguments are also well littered with inspiration from more classic ideals, akin to those of 17th and 18th century philosophers. Even though you can see the resemblance to other terms of informational themes, the study has shown that enlightenment in its Swedish 1930s usage distinguishes itself

Less på Smokeless : En analys av rökfri tobaks karaktäriseringar i nyhetsmedier

In 1973 the first portioned oral moist tobacco (snus) in Sweden is launched unto the markets by Svenska Tobaksbolaget AB. The product was called Smokeless and was meant to be regarded as an alternative to, at the time, very popular cigarettes. Smokeless was not well received and instead of regarding the product as an alternative to smoking, it was regarded rather as an inferior snus. Today we have a myriad of new tobacco alternatives, with the nicotine pouches being one of the more recent ones having received an upsurge and caused a debate on tobacco products. With this debate in mind, the following study aims to go back in time and see how one of our earliest tobacco alternatives was received by the media and the public. Some questions it seeks to answer is whether marketing plays a role in how the product is discussed and what attributes of Smokeless are described? The material used for the study is Tobaksbolagets own magazine, Tobaksbladet: personaltidning för Svenska tobaks AB. This specific issue of the paper is called Tobaksbolaget i mass media. Tobaksbolaget does not write their own articles in this issue but rather the paper consists of recent news coverage specifically about Tobaksbolagets business. With the help of marketing theory as well as research on specifically tobacco marketing, the study establishes three different themes through which the articles and senders will be analyzed. The result of this study shows that the products descriptions in media is affected by the marketing but maybe not in the way Tobaksbolaget imagined it

Ekonomins effekt på självmordsgraden : Fallet Sverige under Mellankrigstiden

Since Emile Durkheims work “Le suicide” (1897) there has been a long tradition of trying to find the most fitting relationship between suicide and economy. One case which has been omitted is Sweden during the interwar period, 1919-1938. The interwar period in Sweden makes for an interesting case study due to several reasons. Sweden is experiencing rapid growth and urbanization but is also enduring two of its deepest recessions at the same time. The following essay aims to examine specifically this case with the use of three different theories on how the economy affects the suicide rate. The main method used is a multiple regression with descriptive data as a complement. The results of the essay show that the most probable relationship for this period is that of a countercyclical one. Although the results show there is a slight tendency for procyclical relationships as well. Therefore, a non-linear relationship might not be out of the question. To give a more definitive answer, one would most likely have to examine longer timeseries in the future

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
