    Valorization of Food Industries Wastes for the Production of Poly(vinyl) Alcohol (PVA) Biodegradable Composites

    This work is aimed to the development of new green composite materials by the incorporation of natural additives into poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA). Two additives, shredded walnut shells and organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MW), were used to improve the mechanical properties of PVA. Both additives, derived from food industry wastes, were added in a PVA/water solution, which allowed to produce samples by the use of a pressure free process. Rheological analysis was performed in order to study the evolution of the material viscosity during thermal treatment, aimed at water removal. Samples obtained were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), showing an improvement of the glass transition temperature brought by the addition of walnut shells. Finally, flexural tests were carried out on samples obtained after the incorporation of the different additives in PVA and compared with the mechanical properties of the neat matrix. Results obtained indicate the potential improvement brought by the addition of walnut shells, which allows increasing the flexural modulus of about 50%, at the expenses of a flexural strength reduction of about 30%. Also, at least for low amount of added water, the addition of MW was shown to provide an increase of the strain at break equal to 100%

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Biocompatible blends based on poly (Vinyl alcohol) and solid organic waste

    This work is aimed at the development of new green composite materials through the incorporation of the solid organic waste (SOW) in a thermoplastic matrix. After being ground, the organic waste was exposed to a sterilization process, though an autoclave cycle, in order to obtain a complete removal of the bacterial activity. The SOW was found to have a high amount of water, about 65-70%, which made uneconomical its further treatment to reduce the water amount. Therefore, a water soluble polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was chosen in order to produce SOW based blends. However, in order to reduce the viscosity of the PVA/SOW slurry, further amount of water was added. The very low viscosity attained by the water suspension allowed to process the PVA/SOW blends by a pressure-free process, for the production of samples, which were afterwards subjected to physical and mechanical characterization. Flexural tests showed the promising properties of the developed blends. In particular, the relevance of porosity was assessed. Increasing the water amount involved a signification increase of porosity, due to a faster water evaporation during processing. On the other hand, compared to neat PVA, addition of SOW allowed to significantly decrease the porosity of the produced samples. Despite this, the mechanical properties of the PVA/ SOW blends were shown to be lower than those of neat PVA processed analogously

    Fully recyclable bio-based epoxy formulations using epoxidized precursors fromwaste flour: Thermal and mechanical characterization

    Organic wastes represent an increasing pollution problem due to the exponential growth of their presence in the waste stream. Among these, waste flour cannot be easily reused by transforming it into high-value-added products. Another major problem is represented by epoxy-based thermosets, which have wide use but also poor recyclability. The object of the present paper is, therefore, to analyze both of these problems and come up with innovative solutions. Indeed, we propose a completely new approach, aimed at reusing the organic waste flour, by converting it into high-value epoxy-based thermosets that could be fully recycled into a reusable plastic matrix when added to the waste epoxy-based thermosets. Throughout the research activity, the organic waste was transformed into an epoxidized prepolymer, which was then mixed with a bio-based monomer cured with a cleavable ammine. The latter reactant was based on RecyclamineTM by Connora Technologies, and in this paper, we demonstrate that this original approach could work with the synthetized epoxy prepolymers derived from the waste flour. The cured epoxies were fully characterized in terms of their thermal, rheological, and flexural properties. The results obtained showed optimal recyclability of the new resin developed

    Rivestimento ibrido organico/inorganico per proteggere l’elettrodo di zinco in una batteria zinco-aria

    È stata studiata l'efficacia di un rivestimento protettivo ibrido organico/inorganico sul comportamento corrosionistico dello zinco come anodo in una batteria Zn-aria con NaCl come elettrolita. L'utilizzo di un elettrolita neutro è utile per limitare la carbonatazione e la formazione di dendriti, tipiche delle soluzioni alcaline. Il comportamento dell'elettrodo di zinco con e senza rivestimento è stato studiato con varie tecniche elettrochimiche (voltammetria a scansione lineare, polarizzazioni potenziostatiche, EIS e prove di scarica galvanostatiche). Mediante spettroscopia Raman e AFM sono state effettuate indagini chimiche e morfologiche. I risultati elettrochimici hanno evidenziato gli effetti benefici del rivestimento che ha portato anche ad una maggiore capacità di scarica della batteria. Le informazioni spettroscopiche insieme alle immagini AFM e alle relative misure di rugosità hanno dimostrato la minore suscettibilità alla corrosione del campione di zinco rivestito. La presenza del rivestimento, rallentando la passivazione, senza bloccare la corrosione, rappresenta un vantaggio per la ricarica dell'elettrodo di zinco della batteria zinco-aria
