Rationalzeichen
The aim of this dissertation is to propose a new method of understanding and teaching characters, especially numerals, as spatialtemporal experience based on rational elements and components. The method contributes to the solution of the problem that with traditional methods of character representation their shape and content are mutually underivable. The solution requires an innovative approach in rethinking on the very basic level of the character system. The two main contributions of the dissertation are: 1) Delta Number, an innovation of the numeral system, and 2) Rational Character, an innovation of the sign system

A new automated method of e-learner's satisfaction measurement
This paper presents a new method of measuring learnerâ??s satisfaction while using electronic learning materials (e-courses, edutainment games, etc.) in virtual non-linear environments. Method is based on a relation of Discovering and Learning probability distribution curves obtained by collecting and evaluating the human-computer interaction data. While being near real-time, this measurement is considered highly unobtrusive and cost-effective because of its automated approach. The first working prototype EDUSA 1.0 was developed and successfully tested by the Distance Education Studies Centre of Riga Technical University
Automated Analysis of Learner's Satisfaction
This paper describes a new method of collecting and processing data about users’
learning experience in large networks like the internet. An automated measurement method is
used to identify and index learners’ Browsing-Discovering-Learning (BDL) behavior while
interacting with various e-learning materials (e.g. e-courses, edutainment games, etc.). The
proposed method is based on algorithm developed by the Distance Education Study Centre at
Riga Technical University that calculates browsing, discovering and learning probability
distribution curves obtained by collecting and evaluating the multimodal human-computer
interaction data. While being near real-time, this measurement is considered highly
unobtrusive and cost-effective because of its highly automated approach
ZĪMES anatomija (in Latvian) The Anatomy of ZIME (in English)
Kas ir ZĪME?
ZĪME ir datu kopu standartizēta grafiska reprezentācija. ZĪME sastāv no diviem grafiskiem elementiem: (1) Sieta elementa un (2) Koda elementa. Sieta elementu konfigurācija ir nemainīga. Koda elementu konfigurācija mainās saskaņā ar ievadītajiem datiem.
The Anatomy of ZIME
What is ZIME? ZIME is a standardized graphical representation of data sets. ZIME is built of two graphical elements: (1) Sieve element and (2) Code element. Sieve elements have always the same configuration, while Code elements are configured according to the input data
Towards a Ubiquitous Informal Competency Management: Decomposition of Learner’s HCI Patterns
An incitement for the current research was given by being confronted with the problem of lacking adequate production system architecture that could reliably undertake to manage e-learner’s informally acquired competencies: be it on- or off-line. Zalktis client-server system, as presented in this paper, constitutes one possible step towards creation of a ubiquitous informal competency management system. During the current research and development phase, a decomposition approach of the learner’s human-computer interaction patterns is being explored, and how it can be implemented to serve for mass automated competency evidence detection
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
