Helicobacter felis infection is associated with lymphoid follicular hyperplasia and mild gastritis but normal gastric secretory function in cats
No full textThe relationship of Helicobacter felis, a bacterium observed in the stomachs of cats, to gastric disease is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine if H. felis infection alters gastric histopathology, proinflammatory cytokine expression, and secretory function and evokes a humoral immune response in cats. Five specific-pathogen-free (SPF) Helicobacter-free cats were studied before and for 1 year after oral inoculation with H. felis (ATCC 49179). Four SPF H. felis-uninfected cats served as controls. The stomachs of all five H. felis-inoculated cats became colonized, as determined by urease activity, histopathology, PCR, culture, and transmission electron microscopy of serial gastric biopsies at 0, 3, 5, 8, and 12 months. Uninoculated cats remained Helicobacter free. Lymphoid follicular hyperplasia, atrophy, and fibrosis were observed primarily in the pylorus of infected cats. Mild mononuclear inflammation was detected in both infected and uninfected cats, but was more extensive in infected cats, with pangastric inflammation, eosinophilic infiltrates, and cardia gastritis observed only in infected cats. No upregulation of antral mucosal interleukin 1alpha (IL-1alpha), IL-1beta, or tumor necrosis factor alpha was detected by reverse transcription-PCR in any cat. The gastric secretory axes, assessed by fasting plasma gastrin, antral mucosal gastrin and somatostatin immunoreactivity, and pentagastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion, were similar in both infected and uninfected cats. Gradual seroconversion (immunoglobulin G) was observed in four of five infected cats, with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay values reaching 4x to 12x baseline 12 months postinfection. These findings indicate that H. felis infection in cats induces lymphoid follicular hyperplasia, mild gastritis, and seroconversion, but is associated with normal gastric secretory function

Purification of soul in R.K. Narayan's, The Guide
No full textR.K. Narayan is one of the most well known novelist in India who writes in English. He is well known for his depiction and humourous writing on Indian society and culture. R.K. Narayan is essentially a storyteller, whose sensitive, well-drawn portrayals of twentieth-century Indian life were set mostly in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. Most of his novels capture many Indian traits while having a unique identity of their own. The Guide, which is also set in the town of Malgudi is written in a simple style, unpretentious, and witty with a unique flavour as if he was writing in the native mother tongue. The story seems to depict the everyday life of the simple characters in a rather amusing and comical way. But at the same time one can‘t help to wonder if R.K Narayan, who is hailed as a master story teller of India, has only the motive of entertaining and being comical in this book. I belief R.K Narayan has a wider and rather philosophical message beneath his work. From pages to pages of this novel, I noticed how the author holds dear to the age old philosophy that underlines the core of Hinduism –the law of Karma. Therefore, to understand The Guide,one needs to understand the theological aspects of Hinduism. This novel actually takes the readers on a journey of Hinduism and shows how the transition and purification of a Hindu soul takes place through the main character, Raju. Narayan shows how Raju, a character full of flaws goes through different phases in his life to redeem his sins and become a changed person towards the end
Quantitative evaluation of inflammatory and immune responses in the early stages of chronic Helicobacter pylori infection
No full textThe early consequences of Helicobacter pylori infection and the role of bacterial virulence determinants in disease outcome remain to be established. The present study sought to measure the development of host inflammatory and immune responses and their relationship to the putative bacterial virulence factors cag pathogenicity island (cagPAI), vacA allele, and oipA in combination with bacterial colonization density in a feline model of the early stages of H. pylori infection. Gastric tissues obtained from infected and uninfected cats were evaluated for H. pylori ureB, cagPAI, vacA allele, and oipA and colonization density (urease, histology, and real-time PCR). Inflammation was assessed by measuring mRNA upregulation of gamma interferon (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12 p40 and histopathology. The mucosal immune response was characterized by morphometric analysis of lymphoid follicles and by differentiating lymphocyte populations with antibodies against surface markers. Infecting H. pylori strains were positive for vacAs1 but lacked cagPAI and an active oipA gene. Colonization density was uniform throughout the stomach. Upregulation of IFN-γ, IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-8 and increased severity of inflammatory infiltrates and fibrosis were observed in infected cats. The median number and total area of lymphoid aggregates were 5 and 10 times greater, respectively, in the stomachs of infected than uninfected cats. Secondary lymphoid follicles in uninfected cats were rare and positive for BLA.36 and B220 but negative for CD3 and CD79α, whereas in infected cats they were frequent and positive for BLA.36, CD79α, and CD3 but negative for B220. Upregulation of IFN-γ, IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-8 and marked hyperplasia of secondary lymphoid follicles are early consequences of H. pylori infection in cats. The response appears to be similar to that of infected people, particularly children, can develop independently of the pathogenicity factors cagPAI and oipA, and is not correlated with the degree of colonization density or urease activity

Macro-scale matter wave generation in charged particle dynamics in a magnetic field, a consequence of quantum entanglement
No full textMatter wave interference effects on the macro-scale predicted by the author in charged particle dynamics in a magnetic field [R.K. Varma, Phys. Rev. E 64, 036608 (2001)], and observed subsequently [R.K. Varma, A.M. Punithavelu, S.B. Banerjee, Phys. Rev. E 65, 026503 (2002); R.K. Varma, S.B. Banerjee, Phys. Scr. 75, 19 (2007)] have been shown here to be an interesting consequence of quantum entanglement between the parallel and perpendicular degrees of freedom of the particle. Treating the problem in the framework of the inelastic scattering theory, it is shown that these macro-scale matter waves are generated in the ‘parallel’ degree of freedom as a modulation of the plane wave state of the particle along the field concomitantly with the excitation of Landau levels in the perpendicular degree of freedom in an inelastic scattering episode. We highlight here the role of quantum entanglement leading to the generation of this macro-scale quantum entity which has been shown to exhibit observable consequences. This case also exemplifies a situation exhibiting quantum entanglement on the macro-scale
