Aspects of identity in the work of Douglas Strachan (1875-1950)
This thesis explores facets of Scottish identity via the decorative work of Douglas Strachan. Nations and nationalism remain extraordinarily potent phenomena in the contemporary world and this work seeks to examine aspects of Scottish nationhood and cultural identity through Strachan's evocation of history, folklore, religion and myth. It has been argued that these are the chief catalysts for enabling people to define and shape their understanding of themselves and their place within society. Cultural identity is often understood as a passive form of nationalism which is remote from its political counterpart. Yet there are strong arguments to counter this belief. This thesis addresses some of the issues raised by such arguments and adopts an ethno-symbolic approach in order to re-evaluate Strachan's work, and that of his contemporaries. The thesis also develops the theoretical and contextual debates concerning the decorative arts in general and stained glass in particular in order to raise awareness of its merits and its role within our society

Implementation of a new bi-directional solar modelling method for complex facades within the ESP-r building simulation program
This paper provides an overview of a new method for modelling the total solar energy transmittance. It is implemented in the ESP-r building simulation program to model complex façades such as double glazed façades with external, internal or integrated shading devices. This new model has been validated and tested for several cases. The new model required changes to the solar control simulation algorithm and the user interface, so a new “Advanced optics menu” was also introduced into ESP-r. The paper presents the interface development and application of the new technique to different simulation configurations (especially different complex façades with shading devices) in a standard office building
CHURCH AND STATE IN UPPER CANADA: JOHN STRACHAN'S POLITICAL THEOLOGY AND PRACTICE
The purpose of the dissertation is to argue that John Strachan’s involvement in politics and education stemmed from his belief that a generally Christian and particularly Anglican Tory British culture would provide the healthiest form of society in Upper Canada. The project provides a counterbalancing view to the common narrative that Strachan was an ambitious and greedy theological turncoat who stifled the political, educational, and religious development of Upper Canada in the first half of the nineteenth century. It argues instead that Strachan was consistent with the thoughts and beliefs of an eighteenth-century Anglican Tory. Chapters 1 to 3 detail the key political and religious events of the eighteenth century in Britain and North America, as well as Strachan’s early life and personal influences. These chapters show that Strachan’s worldview was shaped by the events of the eighteenth century, and that it is difficult to understand his beliefs and actions without recognising the formative power of those occurrences. Chapters 4 to 6 detail Strachan's theological beliefs in the three central areas of church, education, and politics, emphasising the firm and unchanging nature of these beliefs, and their defining role in his life and actions. Chapters 7 to 9 illustrate how he put those theological beliefs into practice in the three instances of the Clergy Reserves, King’s College, and the battle over Responsible Government. Compromise was unthinkable for Strachan, and caused his defeat in each of the three engagements, a fact that dispels the idea that he was motivated solely or mainly by personal ambition. Instead, Strachan is shown to be an Anglican Tory, theologically motivated and consistent in his support for the established church, Christian university education, and the need to preserve the “Glorious Constitution.”ThesisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD
Researching in cross cultural contexts: a socially just process.
In this paper, we explore culture and its relationship to cross cultural research. The context for this research is Vanuatu, a small South Pacific Island nation. The action research process used was a collaboration between two New Zealand academics, two Ni Vanuatu women researchers and 13 participants over a two year period. The focus of the action research was the design and delivery of a culturally appropriate educational leadership development programme for women. The collaborative research process raised a number of ethical and methodological considerations, for example, the importance of mutually respectful relationships, working in partnership, collaboration, capacity building, transparent communication and consideration of the local context. Using stories from the Vanuatu context, we illustrate how we navigated culture to be able to research in socially just ways. Being involved in socially just, cross cultural research calls for a thoughtful, well-designed and culturally informed approach throughout all stages of the research process, from initial planning through to follow up and capacity building and finally, the sharing of research findings
Strachan-Scott Syndrome: Ayurvedic Perspective
Strachan Scott Syndrome also known as Tropical Ataxic Polyneuropathy (TAN) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by the lesions involving skin and mucous membrane, optic neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy, likely to be caused due to chronic cyanide intoxication following dependency to single plant component, cassava. It is considered as a disease of poor tropical populations but lacks a clear statistics on how many people are affected worldwide, but in affected population prevalence have been noted in more than a quarter. A very little is known about its incidence in India. The clinical spectrum of the syndrome ranges from oculo-oro-genital skin manifestations to severe neurological deficits. This has no direct correlation in classics, though Kalayakhanja which is one of the neurological disorders mentioned under Vatavyadhi, but clinically different in presentation to Strachan Scott Syndrome. This is a disease caused as a result of chronic intoxication of cyanide so etiologically it could be considered under the concepts of Dooshivisha. The signs and symptoms can be considered as the sequential involvement of the Dhatus and Upadhatus, manifesting as a Vatavyadhi as it progresses to involve the nervous system. Being a disease with a very few diagnosed cases and available literatures, this is an attempt in understanding the mechanism of the syndrome from Ayurvedic point of view and the probable management strategies which could be adopted to turn into a manageable one
