Modelling of silver adhesion on MgO(100) surface with defects
We show how surface defects (especially F-s(0) and V-s(0) centres) can play a major role in the adhesion of Ag (at 1:4 and 1:1 coverages) on the MgO(100) surface. Our calculations use a periodic (slab) model and an ab initio Hartree-Fock approach with cc posteriori electron correlation corrections. We are able to analyse the interatomic bond populations, effective charges and multipole moments of ions, in combination with the interface binding energy and the equilibrium distances. Both surface defects cause strong redistributions of the electron density which increase the binding energy of metal atoms by more than an order of magnitude. This implies radiation-induced strengthening of metal adhesion on oxide substrates and clarifies defect mechanisms in nucleating film growth. We compare our atomistic predictions with those from simpler methods which might be used for complex technologically interesting systems. There is good general agreement with the image interaction model differences arise partly from different treatments of dispersion and partly from subtle but significant charge redistribution in the Ag. Further, a simple Born-Haber analysis of charge transfer is consistent with the several cases predicted in the atomistic calculations

Strategies for entangling remote spins with unequal coupling to an optically active mediator
We demonstrate that two remote qubits can be entangled through an optically active intermediary even if the coupling strengths between mediator and qubits are different. This is true for a broad class of interactions. We consider two contrasting scenarios. Firstly, we extend the analysis of a previously studied gate operation which relies on pulsed, dynamical control of the optical state and which may be performed quickly. We show that remote spins can be entangled in this case even when the intermediary coupling strengths are unequal. Secondly, we propose an alternative adiabatic control procedure, and find that the system requirements become even less restrictive in this case. The scheme could be tested immediately in a range of systems including molecules, quantum dots, or defects in crystals
THEORETICAL IMPLICATIONS OF STRESS AND MAGNETIC-FIELD SPLITTING OF GR1-LINE IN DIAMOND
The g-value of the excited state associated with the GR1 line is analysed in terms of the Coulson-Kearsley defect-molecule model (1957) for the vacancy in diamond. It is shown that the experimentally observed g value is entirely consistent with the expected 1T2 level of the model provided quenching by the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect is considered. This quenching is estimated from stress splitting data for the GR1 line. The result supports strongly the view that the GR1 centre is the neutral vacancy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. THEORY OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE SELF-TRAPPED EXCITON IN QUARTZ
Quartz is an insulator with an extremely wide band gap in the vacuum ultra-violet. However, under irradiation from high-energy electrons or X-rays, samples of high purity emit a luminescence band in the blue, corresponding to a Stokes shift of approximately 7 eV. This large Stokes shift has been ascribed to the self-trapping of an exciton in an otherwise perfect lattice owing to the distortion it induces; the authors review the evidence for this assignment, and describe electronic-structure calculations which reveal the structure of the distorted configuration and also explain various experimentally determined properties of the centre. The self-trapping process they postulate is a novel one as it is driven primarily by the electron component of the exciton
