Finally, the author identifies Joe Biden’s leadership strengths as well as weaknesses and, as a result, explains what consequences his decision regarding Kamala Harris might have on his future political decisions as the President of the United States of America.

Brains, drains, and roads, growth hills: complementarity between public education and infrastructure in a half-century panel of states
No full textApplying a Barro-style model of endogenous growth to a fifty-year panel of states from 1957 to 2007, We examine the extent to which expenditures on public education and infrastructure— together with the taxes necessary to support them— enhance or impede the steady-state growth of state and local economies, as measured by per capita personal income. Our findings suggest that the independent effect of tax expenditures on either public infrastructure or education alone is significantly negative, but the complementary effect of each on the other is positive enough to make their combined effect significantly positive— except at large scales, where we find diseconomies, consistent with the ‘growth hill’ predicted by theory. Policy effects are identified empirically using a recursive structure with very long lags, GMM/instrumental variables, and controls for both fixed and time-varying heterogeneity. Debaty w amerykańskich kampaniach prezydenckich – przykład wyborów 2016 roku
No full textThe purpose of the article is to analyze, using the 2016 election as an example, the role that debates can play in U.S. presidential campaigns. Presidential debates, since the first one was held in 1960, have become spectacles that draw tens of millions of viewers in front of TV sets, the candidates’ performances are commented on in the media all over the world and commentators outdo each other in analyzing who won the debate. Considering the extensive attention surrounding debates, one might assume their importance is significant. Looking at the 2024 example, where Joe Biden withdrew from the race after a poor debate performance, one could argue that debates can have a considerable impact. However, looking at the 2016 campaign, one can see that the debates did not translate into a change in support. The article seeks to answer the question why the real significance of the 2016 debates was limited, despite debates’ immense popularity. To answer this question the author explores how the debate phenomenon has previously influenced election campaigns and when their impact on polls and election outcomes was evident and then moves on to an analysis of the 2016 campaign, describing its context, the debates and their public reception. By comparing the realities of the 2016 campaign with earlier ones, the author draws conclusions on why the debates had a limited effect in 2016. He identifies two groups of factors that could have influenced this: structural factors related to the evolution of the American political system and factors specific to the 2016 campaign, primarily involving personal characteristics of Donald Trump and the campaign’s unique context. The analysis in the article is based on source materials, including debate transcripts, statistical data on candidate support, and literature on political communication, debates, and the American electoral system.Celem artykułu jest przeanalizowanie, na przykładzie wyborów 2016 roku, roli, jaką w kampaniach prezydenckich w USA mogą odgrywać debaty. The black-white gap in non marital fertility education and mates in segmented marriage markets
No full textThis study is the first to find that mate availability explains much of the race gap in non marital fertility in the United States. Both a general and an education-based metric have strong effects. The novel statistical power arises from difference-indifferences for blacks and whites, multiple cohorts, periods, and coefficient restrictions consistent with both the data and models in which differences in mate availability can induce blacks and whites to respond in opposite directions to changes in mate availability. Results are robust to several alternative specifications and tests and appear relevant where marriages are segmented along racial, religious, or other lines.fertility marriage education
