    Quick fuzzy backpropagation algorithm

    A modification of the fuzzy backpropagation (FBP) algorithm called QuickFBP algorithm is proposed, where the computation of the net function is significantly quicker. It is proved that the FBP algorithm is of exponential time complexity, while the QuickFBP algorithm is of polynomial time complexity. Convergence conditions of the QuickFBP, resp. the FBP algorithm are defined and proved for: (1) single output neural networks in case of training patterns with different targets; and (2) multiple output neural networks in case of training patterns with equivalued target vector. They support the automation of the weights training process (quasi-unsupervised learning) establishing the target value(s) depending on the network's input values. In these cases the simulation results confirm the convergence of both algorithms. An example with a large-sized neural network illustrates the significantly greater training speed of the QuickFBP rather than the FBP algorithm. The adaptation of an interactive web system to users on the basis of the QuickFBP algorithm is presented. Since the QuickFBP algorithm ensures quasi-unsupervised learning, this implies its broad applicability in areas of adaptive and adaptable interactive systems, data mining, etc. applications

    Achieving OAI PMH compliancy for CDS/ISIS databases

    Purpose – The main purpose of this paper is to present the work recently carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with Associazione per la documentazione le biblioteche e gli archivi (DBA) in Italy to make web CDS/ISIS-based applications compliant with the OAI-PMH. CDS/ISIS is an Integrated Storage and Information Retrieval System of Unesco, which is widely used especially in Latin America and Africa. There are hundreds of CDS/ISIS-based application systems managing bibliographical reference, ensuring high quality content through the use of built-in authority files, data entry guidelines and validations. It also allows for metadata export in many different formats. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology adopted included study, analysis and evaluation of three existing solutions for exposing metadata from the CDS/ISIS database repositories to the OAI framework. Findings – The implementation did not include the development of automatic procedures for incremental harvesting from CDS/ISIS databases nor the normalization of the harvested data. However, a lot of experience in implementation of OAI was gained which will be useful for future development of non-CDS/ISIS systems. Research limitations/implications – The research and development work demonstrates the importance and implications of this work for the whole CDS/ISIS community and specifically for the participating centres from the AGRIS network. Originality/value – It proposes an open source, easily parametrizable plug-in tool, which can be adapted to expose metadata from a general structure CDS/ISIS database using the OAI-PMH protocol. This work assures that semantically rich metadata for agricultural science and research publications based on the “AGRIS Application Profile” can be handled by the OAI protocol. This in turn allows for further creation of additional services based on the exchange of knowledge on agricultural science and technology publications world-wide

Авторката излага своето мнение за приемането само на пълната форма на определителния член за мъжки род, като си служи с научни и прагматични доводи и доказва ненужността от кратката форма.The definite articles in the Bulgarian language are distinguished by some specific features, some of which are: first, for m.r. ed.h. there are two forms; second - in writing the same is noted in four ways; third - the use of the full and short article depends on syntactic conditions, etc. The author expresses her opinion for accepting only the full form of the defining article for the masculine gender, using scientific and pragmatic arguments and proving the unnecessariness of the short form

    Една от сравнително честите грешки в писмения български език е относно употребта на предлог В и предлог У, изчезване на различието между тях и генерализиране на приликата им в семантично отношение. Това се проявава преди всичко в замяната на предлог У с предлог В. В работата се анализират записани цялостно или частично примери с предлог В, като се разпределят в три групи: 1. Грешна употреба; 2. Възможност за двояка употреба; 3. Употреба на предлог В вместо други предлози. Авторката предвижда по-нататъшно утвърждаване на употребата на предлог В вместо предлог У.One of the relatively common mistakes in written Bulgarian is the misuse of the prepositions V and U, the disappearance of the distinction between them, and the generalization of their semantic similarity. This is manifested primarily in the replacement of the preposition B by U. The work analyzes fully or partially recorded examples with preposition B, and is divided into three groups: 1. Misuse; 2. Possibility for two uses; 3. Use of preposition B instead of other prepositions. The author envisages further validation of the use of preposition B instead of preposition U

    Recognizing friend and foe: Biometrics, veridiction, and the iraq war

In analyzing the deployment of biometrics in Iraq, argue that whereas the body was seen as a site of verification in 20 century surveillance and identification practices, in the ongoing War on Terror, and the Iraq War more specifically, it became a site of veridiction—a site in which the truth about the security of the state can be analyzed (Foucault 2008: 32). The body thus became the basis for determining not so much one\u27s unique identity but one\u27s friendliness to the normative state order. Enemies could thus be identified and confined as a group, and in this process the state could be secured. In the ongoing of the War on Terror, the visual regime of veridiction has been further articulated to the logic of digital technologies in order to categorize an unfamiliar diverse population into a binary simplistic schema consistent of true and false, therefore friend or foe, and thus go —allowed to move through the country—or no go —destined to be detained. In other words, the digitization of veridiction as the primary goal of biometrics is evident in the automation of the recognition method, the conversion of the archive into database, the transition away from the anthropological station onto mobile dispersed data-gathering enterprise, and replacement of scientific expertise with easy-to-use automated intelligence
