Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Empirical evidence on the topological properties of structural paths and some notes on its theoretical explanation
The mathematical literature has developed a large pool of topological concepts and theorems for dynamic systems analysis. The aim of our paper is to make a first step towards the application of these concepts and theorems in the analysis of (long-run) structural change (in the three-sector framework). Our approach focuses on two of the most basic topological notions, namely intersection and self-intersection of trajectories on a two-dimensional domain. We discuss the mathematical foundations of the application of these concepts in structural change analysis, use them for analyzing empirical data, and elaborate new stylized facts stating that different countries’ structural change trajectories are (non-self-)intersecting. Finally, we discuss briefly the theoretical explanations of (non-self-)intersection and a wide range of new research topics relating to (a) the topological classification and comparison of models and evidence and (b) the application of (further) topological concepts in standard branches of growth and development theory
On the predictability of economic structural change by the Poincaré-Bendixson theory
The three-sector framework (relating to agriculture, manufacturing, and services) is one of the major concepts for studying the long-run change of the economic structure. We discuss the system-theoretical classification of the structural change phenomenon and, in particular, the predictability of the structural change in the three-sector framework by the Poincaré-Bendixson theory. To do so, we compare the assumptions of the Poincaré-Bendixson theory to (a) the typical axioms of structural change modelling, (b) the empirical evidence on the geometrical properties of structural change trajectories, and (c) some methodological arguments referring to the laws of structural change. The results of this comparison support the assumption that the structural change phenomenon is representable by a dynamic system that is predictable by the Poincaré-Bendixson theory. Moreover, we discuss briefly the implications of this result for structural change modelling and prediction as well as topics for further research
On development paths minimizing the aggregate labor-reallocation costs in the three-sector framework and an application to structural policy
Cross-sector labor reallocation is associated with costs at the micro level ranging from the costs of geographical relocation and skill change/adaptation to unemployment. We show that monotonous reallocation paths minimize the aggregate reallocation costs in the three-sector framework (relating to agriculture, manufacturing, and services), where we assume that the aggregate reallocation costs are indicated by the strength of cross-sector labor reallocation. By using this result and the (qualitative) labor-reallocation ‘laws’ based on the theoretical/empirical literature consensus, we derive the cost-minimizing development strategy for a developing country. We use these results to discuss some well-known structural/trade strategies and compare the historical reallocation costs across countries
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Structural change is associated with high costs for the economy and the society ranging from environmental pollution to unemployment. We focus on the three-sector framework (related to agriculture, manufacturing and services) and assume that the structural change costs increase with the strength of structural change. We show that monotonous structural change paths are minimizing the structural change costs in this framework. By using this result and the (qualitative) stylized facts of structural change based on the theoretical and empirical literature consensus, we derive the cost-minimizing strategy for a developing country. We use these results to discuss some well-known structural/trade strategies
A Theorem on the Limit-Properties of Structural Change and some Implications
Recent growth literature studies structural change in relatively specific three-sector growth models with a focus on the agriculture-manufacturing-services structure. In this paper we take another approach for studying this structural change. By using only few axioms on the properties of structural change trajectories and some mathematical theorems on the limit-properties of trajectories in the plane, we show that structural change in a three-sector framework is a relatively simple process: it is either transitory or cyclical unless there are some “exogenous” driving forces. We elaborate the implications of this result for the structural change modelling literature and topics for further research
