Advancing Typology of Computer-Supported Influence: Moderation Effects in Socially Influencing Systems
Persuasive technologies are commonly engineered to change behavior and attitudes of users through persuasion and social influence without using coercion and deception. While earlier research has been extensively focused on exploring the concept of persuasion, the present theory-refining study aims to explain the role of social influence and its distinctive characteristics in the field of persuasive technology. Based on a list of notable differences, this study outlines how both persuasion and social influence can be best supported through computing systems and introduces a notion of computer-moderated influence, thus extending the influence typology. The novel type of influence tends to be more salient for socially influencing systems, which informs designers to be mindful when engineering such technologies. The study provides sharper conceptual representation of key terms in persuasive engineering, drafts a structured approach for better understanding of the influence typology, and presents how computers can be moderators of social influence
Towards a Framework for Socially Influencing Systems: Meta-analysis of Four PLS-SEM Based Studies
People continuously experience various types of engagement through social media, mobile interaction, location-based applications, and other technologically advanced environments. Often, integral parts of such socio-technical contexts often are information systems designed to change behaviors and attitudes of their users by leveraging powers of social influence, further defined as socially influencing systems (SIS). Drawing upon socio-psychological theories, this paper initially reviews and presents a typology of relevant social influence aspects. Following that, it analyzes four partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) based empirical studies to examine the interconnectedness of their social influence aspects. As a result, the analysis provides grounds for seminal steps towards the development and advancement of a framework for designing and evaluating socially influencing systems. The main findings can also deepen understanding of how to effectively harness social influence for enhanced user engagement in socio-technical environments and guide persuasive engineering of future socially influencing systems
Persuasive Backfiring: When Behavior Change Interventions Trigger Unintended Negative Outcomes
Numerous scholars study how to design evidence-based interventions that can improve the lives of individuals, in a way that also brings social benefits. However, within the behavioral sciences in general, and the persuasive technology field specifically, scholars rarely focus-on, or report the negative outcomes of behavior change interventions, and possibly fewer report a special type of negative outcome, a backfire. This paper has been authored to start a wider discussion within the scientific community on intervention backfiring. Within this paper, we provide tools to aid academics in the study of persuasive backfiring, present a taxonomy of backfiring causes, and provide an analytical framework containing the intention-outcome and likelihood-severity matrices. To increase knowledge on how to mitigate the negative impact of intervention backfiring, we discuss research and practitioner implications
Persuasive Cities for Sustainable Wellbeing: Quantified Communities
Can you imagine a city that feels, understands, and cares about your wellbeing? Future cities will reshape human behavior in countless ways. New strategies and models are required for future urban spaces to properly respond to human activity, environmental conditions, and market dynamics. Persuasive urban systems will play an important role in making cities more livable and resource-efficient by addressing current environmental challenges and enabling healthier routines. Persuasive cities research aims at improving wellbeing across societies through applications of socio-psychological theories and their integration with conceptually new urban designs. This research presents an ecosystem of future cities, describes three generic groups of people depending on their susceptibility to persuasive technology, explains the process of defining behavior change, and provides tools for social engineering of persuasive cities. Advancing this research is important as it scaffolds scientific knowledge on how to design persuasive cities and refines guidelines for practical applications in achieving their emergence

AbstractOrganizations continuously strive to engage customers in the services development process. The social web facilitates this process by enabling novel channels for voluntary feedback-sharing and collaborative interaction through social media and technologically advanced environments. The component parts of these environments are information systems that are linked with social media and designed for large displays to support interactivity.The work performed during this research involved the design and assessment of operational software features for encouraging user engagement through publicly displayed information systems. Drawing upon socio-psychological theories and interconnecting them to the seven social influence design principles listed in the Persuasive Systems Design model, this dissertation examines the role of persuasive software features in altering human behavior with respect to engagement in feedback-sharing and collaborative interaction.The dissertation consists of five quantitative studies, including one Twitter survey (involving 403 respondents) and four experiments with publicly displayed Twitter-based systems (involving 284 users), that successively complement each other to address the main research question: How can social influence design principles persuade people to engage with publicly displayed systems that are integrated with social media?The results of these studies reveal interplay between the design principles and indicate that they have the capacity to improve the persuasiveness of information systems and predict the behavioral intentions of users to engage with such systems in the future. Based on these findings, a framework for studying socially influencing systems (SIS) is proposed. This framework is potentially instrumental in achieving a richer understanding of how to effectively harness social influence for enhanced user engagement through socio-technical environments and for the future development of persuasive information systems.TiivistelmäOrganisaatioiden palvelukehityksen tavoitteena on sitouttaa ja innostaa asiakkaita. Gamification in social media
As social media keeps expanding and alternatives for existing services arise, the need for engaging and sustaining users increases as well. One method for engaging users is the use of gamification.
The purpose of this study was to found a basis of knowledge of the current state of gamification social media. The study was conducted as qualitative content analysis, analysing 18 social media sites of different types. The analysis concentrated on the game elements incorporated in the services, such as points and badges.
The findings of the study resulted that social media in general employs many different game elements. Gamification is used to suggest activities to the users, to encourage active participation and to reward users for wanted behavior. A common use of gamification in social media was found to be quality and appeal control over user-generated content
Software architectures for social influence : analysis of Facebook, Twitter, Yammer and FourSquare
Social media systems like Facebook and Twitter have experienced exponential growth in their user base as they fulfill basic human desires of communication, sharing of opinions, thoughts and intentions. Plus they also act as source of news and a place to network and meet interesting people who would otherwise be unreachable. Social media systems have thus become important tools for dissemination of information and addressing peoples’ information needs and as they are user driven and interactions are mainly over user-generated content, they provide useful features for supporting conversations which are the essence of such systems.
This research is a conceptual analysis of how social media systems have been modeled to influence. The aim is to discern how the design choices made during development have enabled the growth of such systems and their prevalent influence on user interactions. The theoretical basis of the research is a persuasive context which describes how interactive computing systems have an impact on users’ thoughts and consequently lead to a change in their behavior. The study focuses on the architectures of Facebook, Twitter, Yammer and Foursquare to date among the most common social media systems serving different user needs while essentially encouraging conversations in a collaborative environment. The architectures of these systems mainly developed using open source software have undergone numerous changes in order to be able handle enormous amounts of user-generated data in real time and at the same time also be secure and respond to the user’s needs.
Taking these factors into consideration, this research through review of literature, provides further insights into the use of social media systems and how their inherent design choices provide a platform to influence both user actions and interactions by: (i) contrasting between various social media systems, (ii) detailing the features that facilitate influence, (iii) analyzing the architectures of four social media systems, and (iv) analyzing the persuasion context and the resultant effects.
The research is limited by the choice of the four systems for analysis and its conceptual nature which could not provide adequate opportunities for discerning key contextual issues like location, category and knowledge of users and so forth. This could be extended by empirical studies that are longitudinal in nature and use of data mining and/or social network analysis to discern the relationships and discussions with the respective systems
