Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Território quilombola de Rio Pardo : dimensões sociológicas e educativas
Get PDFO presente Trabalho de Conclusão é resultado de uma pesquisa qualitativa e aborda um estudo sobre a comunidade quilombola com reflexões de base sociológica e educativa, a fim de contribuir para a compreensão deste fenômeno social no Brasil. Traz como referência empírica o território quilombola no município de Rio Pardo – RS, no que tange a modalidade de educação escolar quilombola. Da mesma forma, busca discutir no âmbito educacional elementos que ampliem a visibilidade desta comunidade, levando-se em conta suas formas de viver e agir como descendentes de africanos no Brasil, traduzidos pela legislação federal que vai da demarcação de terra à educação escolar diferenciada nas comunidades. A pesquisa assentou-se em investigar o ensino de Ciências Sociais no Ensino Médio no território quilombola Rincão dos Negros no município de Rio Pardo e problematizar sobre os desafios a ele imposto. O estudo preocupou-se com o diálogo entre os conteúdos e práticas pedagógicas desenvolvidas na escola e as práticas próprias da comunidade local. Foram apresentados, a noção de educação como direito fundamental e o conceito de educação das diferenças, que norteiam o trabalho com destaque para as ações afirmativas que ganharam corpo em políticas públicas educacionais através de leis, decretos e pareceres que estabelecem a criação da modalidade de ensino diferenciado de Educação Escolar Quilombola. Modalidade essencial para que este grupo tenha acesso a uma escola que valorize aspectos importantes a esses modos de vida e porque a educação básica formal não dá conta da diversidade étnica, cultural, econômica e outras no país. Para responder essas questões foram produzidos dados que contextualizaram a relação da população negra da região quilombola e o referencial teórico-metodológico de análise. O desenvolvimento da pesquisa, valeu-se da pesquisa qualitativa e método descritivo sendo desenvolvida a partir de entrevistas semiestruturadas aos professores do ensino médio da área de Ciências Humanas de uma Escola que recebe a Comunidade Quilombola Rincão dos Negros. Os procedimentos de investigação utilizados nesta pesquisa foram implicados em dados secundários, sobre a legislação relacionada à comunidade quilombola, bem como pela exploração da estrutura de serviços públicos em educação realizados na devida comunidade pesquisada. Também compreendeu o levantamento de dados primários, através de leituras e da análise de documentos (relatórios, documentos oficiais etc.) existentes em relação às comunidades quilombolas e escola, bem como as entrevistas considerando como recorte temporal, o período do ano em curso (seis meses) que refere ao estudo e análise documental. A partir dos dados da pesquisa sobre a Educação Escolar Quilombola e Comunidade Quilombola Rincão dos Negros do município de Rio Pardo, percebeu-se uma fragilidade da identidade quilombola enquanto populações étnicas que possuem presunção de ancestralidade, formas de organização do espaço, cultura e identidades próprias. Da mesma forma um enfraquecimento de entendimento acerca do currículo enquanto construção social de um processo estruturado afim de trazer discussões pertinentes a realidade apresentada. Porém, existem possibilidades e condições de colocar em prática o que estabelece as Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais para a Educação Escolar Quilombola.This Conclusion Paper is the result of qualitative research and addresses a study of the quilombola community with reflections on a sociological and educational basis, in order to contribute to the understanding of this social phenomenon in Brazil. It brings as an empirical reference the quilombola territory in the municipality of Rio Pardo - RS, regarding the quilombola school education modality. Likewise, it seeks to discuss elements in the educational field that increase the visibility of this community, taking into account their ways of living and acting as descendants of Africans in Brazil, translated by federal legislation that ranges from land demarcation to differentiated school education in communities. The research was based on investigating the teaching of Social Sciences in High School in the Quilombola territory Rincão dos Negros in the municipality of Rio Pardo and problematizing the challenges imposed on it. The study was concerned with the dialogue between the contents and pedagogical practices developed at school and the practices of the local community. The notion of education as a fundamental right and the concept of education of differences were presented, which guide the work with emphasis on affirmative actions that gained body in educational public policies through laws, decrees and opinions that establish the creation of the teaching modality differentiated from Quilombola School Education. Essential modality for this group to have access to a school that values important aspects of these ways of life and because formal basic education does not take into account the ethnic, cultural, economic and other diversity in the country. To answer these questions, data were produced that contextualized the relationship between the black population of the quilombola region and the theoretical-methodological framework of analysis. The research development took advantage of qualitative research and descriptive method being developed from semi-structured interviews to high school teachers in the Human Sciences area of a State School (rural school) that receives the Quilombola Community Rincão dos Negros. The investigation procedures used in this research were implicated in secondary data, on the legislation related to the quilombola community, as well as by the exploration of the structure of public services in education carried out in the researched community. It also comprised the survey of primary data, through readings and analysis of documents (reports, official documents, etc.) existing in relation to the quilombola communities and school, as well as interviews considering as a time frame, the period of the current year (six months) referring to the study and document analysis. Based on research data on Quilombola School Education and the Rincão dos Negros Quilombola Community in the municipality of Rio Pardo, a weakness in the Quilombola identity was perceived as ethnic populations that have a presumption of ancestry, forms of space organization, culture and their own identities . Likewise, a weakening of understanding about the curriculum as a social construction of a structured process in order to bring relevant discussions to the presented reality. However, there are possibilities and conditions to put into practice what is established by the National Curriculum Guidelines for Quilombola School Education
