    William Stevens (1732-1807): Lay activism in late Eighteenth-Century Anglican high churchmanship

    Set within the context of a neglected history of lay involvement in High Churchmanship, this thesis argues that William Stevens (1732-1807)—a High Church layman with a successful commercial career—brought to the Church of England not only his piety and theological learning, but his wealth and business acumen. Combined with extensive social links to some of that Church’s most distinguished High Church figures, Stevens exhibited throughout his life an influential example of High Church ‘lay activism’ that was central to the achievements and effectiveness of High Churchmanship during the latter half of the eighteenth century and the early years of the nineteenth. In this thesis, Stevens’s lay activism is divided into two sub-themes: ‘theological activism’ and ‘ecclesiastical activism’. Theological activism was represented primarily by Stevens’s role as a theologian or ‘lay divine’, a characteristic that resulted in numerous publications that engaged in contemporary intellectual debate. Ecclesiastical activism, on the other hand, represented Stevens’s more practical contributions to Church and society, especially his role as a philanthropist and office holder in a number of Church of England societies. Together, Stevens’s intellectual and practical achievements provide further justification of the revisionist claim that eighteenth-century Anglican High Churchmanship was an active ecclesiastical tradition. Additionally, however, Stevens’s life challenges conventional assumptions about the High Church tradition—especially its tendency to emphasise the lives and experiences of clerics.     The amount of knowledge accessible on the Semantic Web is growing, and there is a need for a scalable solution to facilitate exploring that data. Currently approaches to exploring Semantic Web data either focus on exploring resources individually, following links during exploration, and making little use of collated data, or take the approach of collating and aligning multiple sources into one store for one purpose, and hand-crafting a specific browsing interface onto it. We present an approach that provides a scalable browsing interface, which can browse knowledge from the Semantic Web at will. Our approach creates abstractions of knowledge, collated into facets, which are described using FacetOntology. FacetOntology facilitates describing facets from RDF data, suitable for use in creating datasets for faceted browsing

    Growth morphologies and mechanisms of the carbide of group IVB and VB elements (MC carbide), a typical faceted crystal, were studied with an estimated cooling rate from 102 to 105 K/s. Results showed that although the growth morphologies of the MC carbide vary remarkably with solidification cooling rate, the solid/liquid interface is always atomically smooth, and the growth mechanisms are always lateral growth. The growth mechanism transition from lateral to continuous growth mode, which was predicted by the classic crystal growth theory, was not observed for the TiC type MC carbide within the estimated cooling rate range of 102?105 K/s

    This report describes the Bit Error Probability (BEP) performance of Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) system using the RAKE-receiver in frequency selective slow Rayleigh fading channels. The analysis has been carried out by a theoretical approach using the characteristic function method for quadratic form of Gaussian random variables and by computer simulation.     A Systematic LT Coded Arrangement for Transmission Over Correlated Shadow Fading Channels in 802.11 Ad-hoc Wireless Networks

    Abstract— Systematic Luby Transform (SLT) codes constitute rateless codes, which are capable of adaptively adjusting their code rate depending on the channel quality without any explicit channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an SLT coded wireless system communicating over a correlated fading channel within an 802.11b network. The simulation results show that the SLT coded system can achieve a 3 dB gain in term of fading deviation when fading correlation changes from 1 Hz to 5 Hz. Moreover, it is found that a system employing an SLT code can provide similar performance to other rateless codes, namely the Luby Transform (LT) code and the Random Linear Fountain Code (RLFC). However, this level of performance is achieved with a reduced number of decoding operations. A 20% reduction is achieved when the standard deviation of the fading amplitude is 10 dB and the communication distance is 7 m. Greater reductions are observed under more benign propagation conditions. Index Terms - Systematic Luby Transform (SLT) code, rate
