Sirio Luginbühl: film sperimentali. Catalogo della mostra (Cittadella, 15 aprile-15 luglio 2018). Ediz. illustrata

    No full text

Flavohemoglobin Hmp protects Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium from nitric oxide-related killing by human macrophages

    No full text
Survival of macrophage microbicidal activity is a prerequisite for invasive disease caused by the enteric pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. Flavohemoglobins, such as those of Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and yeast, play vital roles in protection of these microorganisms in vitro from nitric oxide (NO) and nitrosative stress. A Salmonella hmp mutant defective in flavohemoglobin (Hmp) synthesis exhibits growth that is hypersensitive to nitrosating agents. We found that respiration of this mutant exhibited increased inhibition by NO, whereas wild-type cells pregrown with sodium nitroprusside or S-nitrosoglutathione showed enhanced tolerance of NO. Most significantly, hmp mutants internalized by primary human peripheral monocyte-derived macrophages survived phagocytosis relatively poorly compared with similarly bound and internalized wild-type cells. That the enhanced sensitivity to macrophage microbicidal activity is due primarily to the failure of Salmonella to detoxify NO was suggested by the ability of L-N(G)-monomethyl arginine-an inhibitor of NO synthase-to eliminate the difference in killing between wild-type and hmp mutant Salmonella cells. These observations suggest that Salmonella Hmp contributes to protection from NO-mediated inhibition by human macrophages.</p

CN30Laryngectomized patients caregivers’ life experience: A phenomenological study

    No full text
Background: Laryngectomized patients often depend on their caregivers who have a central and difficult role in supporting them dealing with financial, social, and relational issues. In fact, they feel very responsible and committed, especially considering the time devoted to take care of their beloved. Besides, providing care induces caregivers high stress levels, emotional distress, anxiety and the fear of cancer recurrence or progress. Few studies investigated laryngectomized patients caregivers’ life experience during both the whole course of illness and at the end of the treatment. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to explore, through a phenomenological approach, the lived-experience of primary family caregivers of laryngectomized patients undergoing radical surgery. Methods: Qualitative semi-structured and audiotaped interviews were held with 12 laryngectomized patients’ primary family caregivers. Data were analysed using the descriptive phenomenological approach outlined by Colaizzi. Results: Three key themes emerged: the caregivers lived experience of illness; the change of caregivers’ daily life and how they support their sick beloved. The experience of caregivers’ lived relations changes from being a family member to a supportive carer, and the illness of their beloved negatively affects their psychological lived experience. Their perception of time and Quality of Life change as their perception of the future becomes uncertain. Finally, they feel guilty mainly because of the limited amount of time they can devote to their beloved. Conclusions: The study findings allowed to understand in depth how the presence of a laryngectomized person in the family may affect the life of the caregiver, even after the treatment phase. This suggests the need for healthcare professionals to support caregivers throughout the whole care journey and especially in dealing with the perception of time during the diagnosis and care phases. Further research should be conducted on factors contributing to time perception alteration and possible interventions to support caregivers to cope with it

Knowledge and competence with patient safety as perceived by nursing students: the findings of a cross-sectional study

    No full text
Background: Ensuring safety in health-care settings is provoking improvements both in education and clinical practice. However, the studies available have not offered to date information regarding knowledge and competence on patient safety (PS) developed by nursing students over their academic career. There is no documentation of the amount of close calls and/or adverse events that students may have witnessed and the degree of safety perceived in the attended clinical settings. Objectives: To describe the perception of nursing students regarding their own knowledge and competence on PS and describe differences, if any, among students attending the first, second and third academic year. Design: A cross-sectional study design was undertaken in 2013. Participants and Setting: A convenience sample of 621 nursing students of two bachelors nursing degrees located in two Italian universities, was the population target of the study. Students attending the first, second and third academic year, obtaining admission to the annual clinical competence examination, were eligible. Methods: The Italian version of the Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSSIta) and open-ended questions was administered to the students after having obtained their informed written consent. Results: A total of 573 students (response rate 92.4%) participated. Around a quarter (28.8%) of students reported having experienced an adverse event or close call during their clinical experience. The settings where they learn were perceived as unsafe by 46.9% of students. PS knowledge and competence as perceived by students, was high (Median=4) in all factors and dimensions of the H-PEPSSIta tool. High PS knowledge and competence was reported by first-year students, moderate by second-year students and higher at the end of the third-year. Conclusions: Faculties and health-care institutions offering clinical placements have to share the responsibility of well-prepared future nurses, working together to improve PS through dialogue when issues are identified by students

Providing care to a family member affected by head and neck cancer: a phenomenological study

    No full text
Cancer is recognized as a family illness as many head and neck cancer (HNC) patients after treatment require assistance from a family caregiver throughout the rest of their life. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of primary family caregivers of HNC patients dealing with laryngectomy regarding their complex supportive role

Nursing students’ knowledge of patient safety and development of competences over their academic years: Findings from a longitudinal study

    No full text
Future nurses should possess the knowledge and competences necessary to ensure patient safety. However, little evidence is available on the way in which students learn patient safety-related principles over time. This study explored the progress of a cohort of Italian undergraduate nursing students as they acquired patient safety knowledge and competences from time of enrolment to graduation

Corpi d'altrove. Sollecitazioni audiovisive per nuove italianità

    No full text
